15PURPOSE: We determine whether the nadir prostate specific antigen (PSA) level after hormone therapy can be used to predict the progression to hormone refractory prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the progressive status and survival of 177 patients with stage C or D prostate cancer who had received hormone therapy at our institution. The overall survival rate, incidence of progression to hormone refractory prostate cancer and interval until progression were analyzed with referenc
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the expression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1, a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF, an important angiogenic factor in solid tumours) in prostate cancer, and their relationship with p53 status. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using immunohistochemistry, the expression of VEGF, TSP-1 and p53 was assessed in 82 archival tissue specimens from 23 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), 22 with localized prostate cancer and 37 with metast
UNLABELLED: What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Late recurrence more than five years after the initial treatment is one of the biological behaviours specific for RCC. In our study, late recurrence was observed in 8.8% of the patients. Also, patients with late recurrence had more favorable clinicopathological features and better prognosis with long cancer-specific survival after recurrence. Age and preoperative hs-CRP levels may be independent predictive factors for late rec
Most non-muscle invasive bladder cancers have been treated by transurethral resection and following intravesical injection of immunotherapeutic agents. However, the delivery efficiency of therapeutic agents into bladder wall is low due to frequent urination, which leads to the failure of treatment with side effects. Here, we report a urease-powered nanomotor containing the agonist of stimulator of interferon genes (STING) for the efficient activation of immune cells in the bladder wall. After ch
AIM: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of metastasectomy after nephrectomy in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who had not received systemic therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 62 patients were included in the study. The patients were categorized according to their surgical treatment: the metastasectomy group (n = 21) and the nonmetastasectomy group (n = 41). RESULTS: In the metastasectomy group, the median overall survival was 36.5 (range 4.0-182.7) mon
BACKGROUND: The objective of the current study was to determine the significance of sarcomatoid differentiation as a prognostic factor for immunotherapy in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS: Patients with metastatic RCC were included in this study and were categorized according to sarcomatoid differentiation. RESULTS: Patients with sarcomatoid differentiation had more aggressive tumor characteristics than those without sarcomatoid differentiation. After immunotherapy, the median pro
PURPOSE: We evaluated whether the risk of progression and the recurrence rate were different in patients with primary and nonprimary stage T1 grade 3 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1983 and 1997, 75 patients were treated for stage T1 grade 3 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Of these patients 68 (primary and nonprimary tumor in 58 and 14, respectively) without carcinoma in situ who had not undergone complete cystectomy immediately after diagn
Prostate cancer can be controlled by androgen-hormone treatment until the cancer becomes refractory. It is believed that hormone sensitivity is largely dependent on androgen receptor (AR) activity. Here, we found the histone demethylase KDM7A which demethylates histone H3K27 to be overexpressed in enzalutamide resistant castration-resistant prostate cancer cell line C4-2b, and investigated the molecular mechanism whereby androgen receptor activity is regulated by KDM7A. We engineered AR-positive
Pathological T3a upstaging of cT1 renal cell carcinoma was associated with a poorer prognosis, compared to pT1 disease. However, the surgical technique (radical or partial nephrectomy) did not affect the recurrence rate. Therefore, clinicians should select the treatment method based on the clinical stage, and consider the pathological stage during the follow-up.
We examined the anti-cancer effects and molecular mechanism of simvastatin in human castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) cells, particularly focused on LIN28B and its target molecule, let-7 microRNA (miRNA) among the various target genes of NF-κB. A human CRPC cell line (PC3) was used in the current study. Gene expression patterns were evaluated using real time-PCR and western blot analysis. CCK-8 assay was used for assessing cell viability and proliferation, and a clonogenic assay was ad
OBJECTIVE: To develop a simple and rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for detecting Oxalobacter formigenes (which degrades oxalate in the gut) in fecal specimens from healthy volunteers and patients with urolithiasis, and to determine whether O. formigenes can be detected in frozen or fresh fecal samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole bacterial DNA was isolated directly from fresh and frozen fecal samples obtained from 30 healthy volunteers free from urolithiasis and from fresh fecal sa
