15Adenocarcinomas of the pancreas and biliary tract are highly malignant neoplasms, which are found in the advanced stage. Chemotherapy commonly plays a palliative role in the treatment of pancreatic and biliary tract cancers. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the most widely studied single agent; the response rate of 5-FU is only 20%. Recently, some reports presented interesting results, in which 5-FU, modulated with levofolinic acid (leucovorin), was active in patients with colorectal cancer. In relation
We conducted a prospective study to assess the prevalence and clinical characteristics of anemia and to define the risk factors for anemia in older Koreans. From October 2002 to November 2002, 1,254 subjects over the age of 60 years were selected from a cross-sectional study. All subjects underwent a complete medical history taking and laboratory testing, which included; a complete blood cell count, reticulocyte, liver and renal function tests, lipid profiles, and iron profiles. The median age w
Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a frequent complication of cancer chemotherapy, which causes death in 4-21% of patients and worsens the quality of life of patients. As a simple and accurate way of identifying patients who are at risk of FN, a lymphocyte count on post-chemotherapy day 5 was suggested. To confirm the feasibility of this method and to define the incidence of FN among our own patient group, we conducted this prospective study. From September 2001 to February 2002, patients who received
This study was conducted to verify whether the response to high-dose intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) was related to the effect of splenectomy in chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) patients. A total of 79 patients over 16 years of age were enrolled in this study. The response to the treatment was classified on the basis of the platelet count as no response (NR, <50 x 10(9)/l), incomplete response (IR, (50-150) x 10(9)/l), and complete response (CR, >150 x 10(9)/l). The response
Polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and primary myelofibrosis are collectively known as 'Philadelphia-negative classical myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs).' The discovery of new genetic aberrations such as Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) have enhanced our understanding of the pathophysiology of MPNs. Currently, the JAK2 mutation is not only a standard criterion for diagnosis but is also a new target for drug development. The JAK1/2 inhibitor, ruxolitinib, was the first JAK inhibitor approved f
In this study, we evaluated the clinical significance of detecting carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) mRNA in the peripheral blood samples of patients with gastric cancer. We analyzed the peripheral blood of 46 patients with gastric cancer who had undergone curative resection. The presence of CEA mRNA was serially monitored using a CEA-specific reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) every 2 months. The clinical recurrence rates according to category were as follows: 100% (3 of 3) i
Expression of a NUP98-HOXD13 (NHD13) fusion gene leads to myelodysplastic syndrome in mice. In addition to ineffective hematopoiesis, we observed that NHD13 mice were lymphopenic; the lymphopenia was due to a decrease in both T and B lymphocytes. Although the pro-B cell (B220(+)/CD43(+)) populations from the NHD13 and wild-type mice were similar, the NHD13 mice showed decreased pre-B cells (B220(+)/CD43(-)), indicating impaired differentiation at the pro-B to pre-B stage. Thymi from NHD13 mice w
The combination of SBRT and iDC vaccination may enhance treatment effects. Clinical trials and further studies are warranted in the future.
BACKGROUND: Iron is essential for cell proliferation and viability. It has been reported that iron depletion by a chelator inhibits proliferation of some cancer cells. Deferasirox is a new oral iron chelator, and a few reports have described its effects on lymphoma cells. The goal of this study was to determine the anticancer effects of deferasirox in malignant lymphoma cell lines. METHODS: Three human malignant lymphoma cell lines (NCI H28:N78, Ramos, and Jiyoye) were treated with deferasirox a
Expression of a NUP98-HOXD13 (NHD13) fusion gene, initially identified in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome, leads to a highly penetrant myelodysplastic syndrome in mice that recapitulates all of the key features of the human disease. Expansion of undifferentiated lineage negative (lin(neg)) hematopoietic precursors that express NHD13 was markedly inhibited (30-fold) in vitro. Decreased expansion was accompanied by decreased production of terminally differentiated cells, indicating impaire
Numerous studies have analysed the clinical efficacies of hypomethylating agents (HMAs) in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). However, reports that compare the two HMAs, decitabine and azacitidine, in patients with lower-risk (low and intermediate-1) MDS are limited. We compared 5-day decitabine and 7-day azacitidine regimens in terms of treatment responses, survival outcomes, and adverse events in patients with lower-risk MDS with poor prognostic features. The overall response rates
