Comparison of Rectal and Infrared Thermometry for Obtaining Body Temperature of Gnotobiotic Piglets in Conventional Portable Germ Free Facility
Tae‐Ho Chung, Woo-Sung Jung, Eui‐Hwa Nam, Jihyun Kim, Seol-hee Park, Cheol‐Yong Hwang
Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal SciencesOA

Gnotobiotic piglets (n = 10) were hand-reared in conventional germ-free facilities. Piglet body temperatures were measured with rectal and non-contact infrared thermometry (NIFT) on the lower eyelid, auricular center and margin, parietal regions, axilla, central abdomen and dorsum, and the perianal region. Body temperature measurements at central abdomen, cranial dorsum, and perianal regions had NIFT values which had a significant linear relationship (p<0.0001) with rectal thermometry. The predi

SJR Q1Veterinary Dermatology

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a challenging pathogen cultured from cases of acute and chronic canine otitis and sometimes in cases of deep pyoderma. The spread of antimicrobial resistance, especially carbapenem resistance, is a serious therapeutic challenge worldwide. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To investigate the identification and characterization of resistant P. aeruginosa clinical canine isolates. MATERIALS: Clinical isolates (n = 80) were collected from dogs with pyoderma (n = 18) and ot

SJR Q1Veterinary Dermatology

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a common pathogen of skin and ear infections in dogs. The widespread and rapid emergence of meticillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) has created therapeutic challenges in veterinary medicine and the need for alternative treatments. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) against S. pseudintermedius. METHODS: This study was performed using S. pseudinte

Effects of Autogenous Toxoid-bacterin in Lactating Cows with Staphylococcus aureus Subclinical Mastitis.
Cheol‐Yong Hwang, Son‐Il Pak, Hong-Ryul Han
SJR Q2Journal of Veterinary Medical ScienceOA

To evaluate clinical effects of autogenous toxoid-bacterin treatment for Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis in lactating cows, 22 cows which had at least one S. aureus infected quarter were selected from among cows at a S. aureus prevalent dairy farm. Eleven cows were injected with their own autogenous toxoid-bacterin and the others were maintained as non-injected control. In the toxoid-bacterin injected group, 27% of infected quarters were cured during the 12-week trial, compared to 5%

SJR Q1Veterinary Dermatology

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among bacteria in dogs with otitis externa has led to a need for novel therapeutic agents. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE: To examine the antibacterial effects of manuka oil combined with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-tromethamine (Tris-EDTA) against Gram-negative bacteria isolates from dogs with otitis externa. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 53 clinical isolates including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae

First detection of multiresistance pRE25-like elements from Enterococcus spp. in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from canine pyoderma
Jung‐Hun Kang, Cheol‐Yong Hwang
SJR Q2Journal of Global Antimicrobial ResistanceOA

Enterococcal pRE25-like elements are suspected to be widespread in MDRSP isolated from companion dogs in Korea. Considering that companion dogs live in a closely shared environment with humans, continuous surveillance of pRE25-like elements is needed for other staphylococci commonly isolated from humans.

Low prevalence of mupirocin resistance in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolates from canine pyoderma in Korea
Ji‐Hyung Park, Jung‐Hun Kang, Jae‐Eun Hyun, Cheol‐Yong Hwang
SJR Q1Veterinary Dermatology

BACKGROUND: Mupirocin is a topical antibacterial drug used for the treatment of staphylococcal infections, including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP). The recent emergence of resistance to mupirocin is a major concern in many countries. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the prevalence and genotype of mupirocin-resistant S. pseudintermedius isolated from pet dogs with pyoderma. SAMPLES: A total of 110 clinical isolates of S. pseudintermedius were collected from dogs w

Yun‐Ji Lim, Jae‐Eun Hyun, Cheol‐Yong Hwang
SJR Q1Veterinary Dermatology

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a major bacterial species associated with canine pyoderma and otitis. Fusidic acid is used to treat skin infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. The incidence of resistance to fusidic acid in S. pseudintermedius has importance in terms of limiting treatment options for bacterial infections. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the occurrence and mechanisms of fusidic acid resistance in clinical isolates of S. pseudintermedius. ANIMALS: Fifty-two

Yeong‐Hun Kang, Jae‐Eun Hyun, Cheol‐Yong Hwang
SJR Q1Veterinary Dermatology

BACKGROUND: Hair cycle arrest (HCA) is a noninflammatory alopecic disease affecting various dog breeds, particularly Pomeranian dogs. This disease is probably a hereditary disorder considering the strong breed predisposition. Despite efforts to identify the pathogenesis of this disease, an underlying specific cause is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To identify candidate gene mutations for HCA in Pomeranian dogs. ANIMALS: Four Pomeranian dogs diagnosed with HCA and four unaffected Pomeranian dogs. MATERIALS

SJR Q1Veterinary DermatologyOA

BACKGROUND: Hair cycle arrest (HCA) is a chronic alopecic disorder in dogs. Clinical responses vary and are often insufficient. Microneedling (MN) has been used as a successful treatment for HCA in dogs; ideal protocols have not yet been established. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy and safety of three needle lengths for MN in dogs with HCA. ANIMALS: Six unrelated client-owned dogs, including five Pomeranians and one mixed-breed dog, diagnosed with HCA. MATERIAL
