15BACKGROUND: The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is an inexpensive clinical surrogate marker for insulin resistance. However, the relationship between TyG index and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclear. We evaluated the relationship between TyG index and CVD using a large-scale population dataset from the National Health Information Database (NHID). METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational cohort study of 5,593,134 persons older than 40 years from 2009 to 2017
Insulin resistance in insulin target tissues including liver, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue is an early step in the progression towards type 2 diabetes. Accurate diagnostic parameters reflective of insulin resistance are essential. Longstanding tests for fasting blood glucose and HbA1c are useful and although the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp remains a "gold standard" for accurately determining insulin resistance, it cannot be implemented on a routine basis. The study of adipokines, and
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) for cardiovascular disease and all cause death in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). DESIGN: Nationwide population based study. SETTING: Longitudinal cohort study in Korea. PARTICIPANTS: 7 796 763 participants in the National Health Screening Programme in 2009 were divided into three groups based on NAFLD status: no NAFLD (fatty liver index<30); grade 1 NAFLD (30≤fatty liver index<60); and grade 2 NAFLD (
BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance is suggested to have negative effects on cognition; however, results from large population studies are lacking. In this study, the potential relationships between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, a simple surrogate marker of insulin resistance, and dementia were evaluated using a large-scale population dataset. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational, cohort study using data from the National Health Information Database from 2009 to 2015 and included
Our results demonstrate that RGZ significantly decreased hepatic lipid accumulation, and that this process appeared to be mediated by the activation of the Sirt6-AMPK pathway. We propose Sirt6 as a possible therapeutic target for hepatic steatosis.
AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of intermittent short-term use of a real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) system in non-insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) uncontrolled with oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multicentre, randomized prospective study, 61 participants were randomly assigned to treatment group 1 (one session of RT-CGM), treatment group 2 (two sessions of RT-CGM with a 3-month interval between sessions) and a control group. All p
CONTEXT: It has been unclear whether the risk of pancreatic cancer is different according to glucose levels. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between fasting glucose levels and pancreatic cancer risk using prospectively collected nationwide population-based cohort data in Korea. DESIGN: The National Health Insurance Service database of claims and preventive health check-up data recorded was used between 2009 and 2015. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 25.4 million patients who had part
To investigate the potential pathophysiologic role of human SRIF receptor gene expression in GH-secreting adenomas in acromegalic patients, we studied the relationship between the SRIF receptor gene expression, endogenous SRIF activity and exogenous response to octreotide in 16 acromagalic patients. Hypothalamic somatostatinergic activity (HSA) was assessed by glucose-induced suppression of TRH-stimulated TSH secretion. As an indicator of somatotrope sensitivity to HSA, glucose-induced suppressi
Serum PGRN levels were clinically significant for predicting recurrence in patients with HR-positive breast cancer during adjuvant tamoxifen therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between 1,5-anhydroglucitol (AG) levels, which are a marker of glycemic control, and stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with 269 subjects with type 2 diabetes who were divided into four groups based on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (eGFR(MDRD)) formula: 57 in control, 111 in CKD stages 1-2, 78 in stage 3, and 23 in stages 4-5. RESULTS:
Obesity is a risk factor for many cancers including breast, esophageal, colon, and thyroid cancer. We aimed to evaluate the association of thyroid cancer with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and weight change. This nationwide population-based cohort study included 11,323,006 adults who joined the national health screening program. Weight change was defined as the difference between the weight of the subjects measured during the study period and the weight at the time of four yea
The prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes, impaired fasting glucose, and co-morbidities from 2006 to 2013 in the population aged ≥30 years were estimated using the Korean NHIS database. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes increased 0.2-0.5% annually, from 5.6% in 2006 to 8% in 2013. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes was higher in men than in women and increased with age. The incidence of type 2 diabetes was 0.81% in 2013 and was 1.4 times higher in men than in women and increased with age. A
