15Uniform 3 nm-sized ceria nanoparticles can protect against ischemic stroke by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing apoptosis. PEGylated ceria nanoparticles showed protective effects against ROS-induced cell death in vitro. Optimal doses of ceria nanoparticles reduced infarct volumes and the rate of ischemic cell death in vivo.
The authors report for the first time that increased brachial PP is an age-independently associated with WMLs in asymptomatic elderly individuals. This result suggests that PP as a presumed marker of vascular aging may predict the presence of sub-clinical cerebrovascular diseases.
OBJECTIVE: Although gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is generally regarded as an alternative biomarker for alcohol consumption, its independent role in vascular diseases emerged recently. However, its role in stroke remains unknown. The aim of this study is to clarify the impact of GGT on stroke in a large-sized, national, standardized population cohort in Korea. METHODS: In Korea, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) provides full-coverage health insurance service for all citizens. Usin
Leptin, one of the most important adipokines, is not only an energy regulator but also a regulator of innate immunity. Inflammation plays a key role in the tissue damage after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and we sought to investigate whether leptin has a detrimental effect on ICH. After the injection of a high replacement dose (0.04 mg/kg) and two pharmacologic doses (4 and 8 mg/kg) of leptin, brain water contents increased significantly compared with that of control mice (P<0.05), which was
BACKGROUND: Among the patients with established coronary artery diseases, obese patients tend to have a more favorable prognosis, which is called as obesity paradox. Interestingly, mildly obese patients who underwent coronary revascularization had a lower risk of bleeding. In this context, we have investigated the association between obesity and hemorrhagic transformation (HTf) after acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: A total of 365 patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke were included in th
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is the most devastating cerebrovascular disease. Cigarette smoking is one of the established risk factors for SAH, but the risk of SAH has not been properly elucidated in relation to smoking cessation. METHODS: We performed a nationwide multicentre case control study involving 33 hospitals in Korea. A total of 426 SAH cases and 426 age and sex matched controls were enrolled. We obtained detailed information on lifestyle, medical history and,
Paroxysmal sympathetic storm (PSS) is a rare complication of severe traumatic brain injury or cerebrovascular disease. Various medications have been tried in patients with PSS, but the clinical responses of the patients were variable. We report a classic case of PSS after spontaneous pontine hemorrhage in which the patient's fluctuating blood pressure and body temperature were dramatically stabilized using morphine.
We investigated the presence of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) in patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) compared to control subjects without NAION to identify the association between NAION and cerebral SVD. We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 63 patients with NAION and 2749 control subjects without any neurologic and ocular diseases including NAION who underwent careful medical interviews, ophthalmic examinations, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) stu
Fimasartan is a newly developed angiotensin receptor blocker, which may have protective effects during myocardial infarction or atherosclerosis. In this context, we investigated the effects of long-term treatment with low-dose fimasartan on focal ischemia in rat brain. We induced focal ischemia in brain by transient intraluminal occlusion of middle cerebral artery (MCA) and administered low-dose (0.5 mg/kg) or regular doses (1 or 3 mg/kg) of fimasartan via intravenous routes. After the administr
OBJECTIVES: Although an alveolar air leak (AAL) after pulmonary resection is a troublesome complication that diminishes a patient's quality of life and increases medical costs, current treatment and preventive methods for AAL are not effective. Therefore, we transplanted adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) to the damaged visceral pleura to facilitate the regeneration of mesothelial cells and investigated the possibility of cell therapy as a treatment option for AAL. METHODS: Stem cells were isolat
