15Based on field cage studies, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) successfully overwintered and reproduced during the winter months in North Carolina. A field survey for thrips vectors of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was conducted during the winter and spring of 1990–1991 and 1991–1992 in North Carolina. Plant, litter, and soil samples were collected from three geographically distinct regions in North Carolina. Plant samples included 51 wild host species and five winter crops. Three species
The response of flower thrips, Frankliniella spp., to various colors and sticky trap designs was evaluated in staked tomato fields in western North Carolina. Yellow sticky traps caught significantly more thrips compared with blue or white traps. There were no differences in the relative proportion of thrips species caught on different colored traps. The size of the flower sampling unit (i.e., 10-flowers versus all flowers per plant) did not influence the correlation between sticky trap catches a
Heavy-metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems is a widespread phenomenon after industrial consumption. Whether aquatic organisms are adapted to the heavy-metal pollutants or not, such environmental stress causes changes in physiological responses. In this study, the aquatic midge, Chironomus riparius Meigen, was used to find changes of expression of proteins in relation to cadmium exposure. Dose-response relationships between cadmium concentrations and mortality of 3rd instar midge larvae were obs
Phytophagous thrips were sampled in commercial tomato, Lycopersicum esculentum L., fields in western North Carolina during a 3-yr period from 1990 to 1992. Tomato flowers were collected to sample thrips and evaluate 3 different sampling units (2, 5, and 10 flowers) for their relative net precision. Flower thrips, Frankliniella tritici (Fitch), and western flower thrips, frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), were the dominant species collected, accounting for 96% of all specimens. Relative net p
Abstract T hrips palmi K arny, melon thrips was introduced and first recorded in 1993 in K orea. This species has become a serious pest of vegetable and ornamental crops. The CLIMEX simulation was applied to T. palmi to predict its potential geographic distribution in K orea under the R epresentative C oncentration P athway ( RCP ) 8.5 climate change scenario. In the CLIMEX simulation, the ecoclimatic index was calculated, and compared in each simulated year and each simulated location. The map
Abstract The spatial distribution of the count of adult greenhouse whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), on yellow sticky traps was analyzed using Taylor's power law and spatial autocorrelation statistics in the cherry tomato greenhouses from 1998–1999. Samples were collected weekly using a cylindrically shaped yellow sticky trap placed in a 5 by 8 grid covering 0.10–0.15 ha in each of five cherry tomato greenhouses. Taylor's (1961) power law indicated that counts of T. vaporariorum
The spatial distribution of adult and immature Thrips palmi Karny on fall potato, Solanum tuberosum L., on Cheju Island, Korea, was studied over a 2-yr period by visually inspecting potato leaves. The majority of thrips collected from the leaves were observed in the top one-third of the plant. The within-field spatial patterns of adults and immature thrips were aggregated. The slopes and intercepts of Taylor's power law did not differ among adults and immature thrips. A fixed-precision-level sam
Studies were conducted in two commercial cucumber greenhouses to examine thrips' seasonal and spatial patterns on Cheju Island, Korea, in 1996. Leaf and flower samples were taken to determine the thrips species and stage complexes inhabiting cucumber plants. Adult thrips (54–55%) were the most dominant stage on flowers and the majority of adult species was Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), whereas immature (82–84%) was the dominant stage on leaves. To determine the spatial distribution patt
The goal of this study was to identify promising new biomarkers of cadmium by identifying differentially expressed proteins in Paronychiurus kimi after exposure to cadmium. Through proteomic analysis of P. kimi using 1-D PAGE and nano-LC-MS/MS, 36 downregulated proteins and 40 upregulated proteins were found. Some of the downregulated and upregulated proteins were verified by LC-MS/MS analysis after 2-D PAGE. Downregulated proteins in response to cadmium exposure were involved in glycolysis and
