15The wide operating range, the inherent nonlinearities of the induction process and the large modeling uncertainties make the design of the fuel-injection controller very difficult. Even though a sliding mode fuel-injection control method is in good agreement with the characteristics of the system, the unavoidable large time-delay between control action and measurement causes the problem of chattering. In this paper, an observer-based fuel-injection control algorithm is suggested for fast respons
This paper proposes a new scaleless position estimation method. From the industrial perspective, the Hall sensor has several advantages: tiny size, light weight, extremely low cost, and insensitivity to environmental contamination and external disturbance. Compared to the square wave Hall sensor, the linear Hall sensor provides more detailed information along the position. However, for combining more than two linear Hall sensors, the sensor offset, the difference in scale, and the unwanted phase
This paper treats air-to-fuel ratio control of a spark ignition engine. A direct adaptive control method using Gaussian neural networks is developed to compensate transient fueling dynamics and the measurement bias of mass air flow rate into the manifold. The transient fueling compensation method is coupled with a dynamic sliding mode control technique that governs fueling rate when the throttle change is not rapid. The proposed controller is simple enough for online computation and is successfu
This study proposes a novel method for estimating driveline torques for a vehicle with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Knowledge of the driveline torque states, such as the torque transmitted through a clutch, and transmission output torque, allows a significant improvement in powertrain control performance, especially during gear shifts and vehicle launch. Furthermore, vehicles with DCT or automatic transmission whose gear shift processes involve clutch-to-clutch shifts require information ab
Electronic wedge brake (EWB) system, first introduced by Siemens VDO, is an efficient way to control a large brake clamping force electronically using a small electric motor. It is designed to amplify the clamping force of electromechanical brakes using a self-energizing effect. However, EWB is very sensitive to variations of system parametric errors, such as the friction coefficient variance during braking. The effect of parametric errors is highly amplified through the same self-energizing mec
An experimental study on the mode transition between low-temperature combustion and conventional combustion was carried out in a light-duty diesel engine. The characteristics of combustion mode transition with various operating parameters, including rate of exhaust gas recirculation change, residual gas, exhaust gas recirculation path length, fuel injection pressure and engine speed, were analysed based on the in-cylinder pressure and hydrocarbon emission of each cycle. In the case of mode trans
It is known that about 50% of air pollutants comes from automotive engine exhaust, and mostly in a transient state operation. However, the wide operating range, the inherent nonlinearities of the induction process and the large modeling uncertainties make the design of the fuel-injection controller very difficult. Also, the unavoidable large time-delay between control action and measurement causes the problem of chattering. In this paper, an observer-based control algorithm based on sliding mode
This paper describes a pressure and flow based control method of diesel engine air-path systems equipped with dual-loop exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbine (VGT). For the control of dual-loop EGR systems, fraction states are usually controlled, but how to select the control outputs is still controversial. In this paper, considering availability and reliability of sensors, pressure and mass flow states are selected as control targets instead of fraction states. A robust
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper deals with the simplification and optimization methods in diesel engine control which is based on the air management system model of 1stage VTG and HP-EGR. Especially, simplified model based controller is suggested including more tracking performance of target values for comparison from previous multivariable sliding mode controller with intake and exhaust manifold output set. Moreover, in calculating desired ex
The electromechanical brake (EMB) is one of future brake systems due to its many advantages. For imple- mentation of the EMB, the correct feed back about clamping force is necessary. Keeping commercialization of the EMB in mind, it is strongly demanded that an expensive load cell measuring the clamping force is replaced with an estimation algorithm. In addition, an estimation of the kissing point where the brake pads start to come into contact with a disk wheel is proposed in this paper. With th
This paper describes an observer design method that estimates the exhaust manifold pressure in a diesel engine with limited sensor information. In the modern model-based control of air flows, information on the exhaust pressure is often necessary for control stability. However, it is not easy to measure the exhaust pressure with sensors due to the unfavorable environment for measurement and the high cost of sensors. Therefore, a robust observer, which is applicable to engines equipped with a dua
This paper deals with air to fuel ratio control of a spark ignition engine, whose pollutant is a major cause of air pollution. A direct adaptive control using Gaussian neural networks is developed to compensate transient fueling dynamics and measurement error in mass air flow rate into the cylinder. The transient fueling compensation method is coupled with a dynamic sliding mode control technique that governs the steady state fueling rate. The proposed controller is simple enough for online comp
