15It is traditionally thought that excitotoxic necrosis is a passive mechanism that does not require the activation of a cell death program. In this study, we examined the contribution of the cytochrome c-dependent mitochondrial death pathway to excitotoxic neuronal necrosis, induced by exposing cultured cortical neurons to 1 mM glutamate for 6 hr and blocked by the NMDA antagonist, dizocilpine. Glutamate treatment induced early cytochrome c release, followed by activation of caspase-9 and caspase
Levetiracetam is a new antiepileptic drug (AED) used for treating and preventing partial or generalized seizures. The usefulness of levetiracetam therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is related to inter- or intra-individual pharmacokinetic variability, drug interactions, and patient noncompliance. We aimed to investigate the levetiracetam TDM status in Korean epilepsy patients. Serum trough levetiracetam concentrations were measured using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry in 710 sample
To investigate the usage of functional neuroimaging as a prognostic tool for seizure recurrence and long-term outcomes in patients with multilobar resection, we recruited 90 patients who received multilobar resections between 1995 and 2013 with at least 1-year follow-up (mean 8.0 years). All patients were monitored using intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) after pre-surgical evaluation. Clinical data (demographics, electrophysiology, and neuroimaging) were reviewed retrospectively. Surgica
Tongue tremor is a rare form of focal tremor. Even though the dysfunction of the dentato-rubro-olivary circular pathway has been proposed as its mechanism, the origin of the rhythmic activities remains unknown. We experienced a case of isolated tongue tremor after the removal of a cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma. To localize the activated structures corresponding to the isolated tongue tremor, we analyzed subtracted ictal SPECT coregistered to MRI (SISCOM). SISCOM demonstrated multiregional hyp
Background and Objectives: Abnormal epileptic discharges in the brain can affect the central brain regions that regulate autonomic activity and produce cardiac symptoms, either at onset or during propagation of a seizure. These autonomic alterations are related to cardiorespiratory disturbances, such as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. This study aims to investigate the differences in cardiac autonomic function between patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE
Epilepsy's impact on cardiovascular function and autonomic regulation, including heart-rate variability, is complex and may contribute to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Lateralization of autonomic control in the brain remains the subject of debate; nevertheless, ultra-short-term heart-rate variability (HRV) analysis is a useful tool for understanding the pathophysiology of autonomic dysfunction in epilepsy patients. A retrospective study reviewed medical records of patients with te
There have been a number of studies about correlations between HLA genotypes in various ethnic groups and occurrence of various cutaneous adverse drug reactions, ranging in intensity from mild to severe, caused by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). This is the first report analyzing the HLA genotypes of 9 Korean patients with skin rashes induced by various AEDs. The AEDs that induced skin rash were lamotrigine (n = 3), carbamazepine (n = 3), oxcarbazepine (n = 1), phenobarbital (n = 1), and phenytoin (
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Long-term videoelectroencephalogram (video-EEG) monitoring is performed to diagnose an epileptic seizure and to investigate the differential diagnosis of paroxysmal events. To provoke an epileptic seizure, an exercise method is performed in some cases during long-term video-EEG recording in the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). The purpose of this study was two-fold: to assess the frequency and severity of adverse events associated with the use of an exercise bicycle and to
Intraoperative neuromonitoring (INM) is well known to be useful method to reduce intraoperative complications during the surgery of nervous system lesions. Evoked potentials are most commonly used among the electrophysiological tests. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials are for detecting the problems along the auditory pathways including the eighth cranial nerve and brainstem. Somatosensory evoked potentials are applied for preventing the spinal cord lesions. The INM is affected by many factors
Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (INM) is one of widely expanding fields as well as one of the effective tools for preventing intraoperative neurologic injuries. In Korea, the current concept of INM was introduced in 1994. Thereafter, domestic INM has rapidly developed and caught up with international level. The Korean Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiological monitoring held symposium of International Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology in 2016. Nation-widely 74 centers are
