15BACKGROUND: Studies on the pathophysiology of nasal polyps in human subjects have been limited; thus an animal model is needed. There is increasing evidence supporting the role of Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B (SEB) in the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis. The aim of this study was to investigate the histological and immunologic effects of SEB on the formation of nasal polypoid lesions in an allergic rhinosinusitis murine model. METHODS: After induction of an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergi
RATIONALE: Interleukin (IL)-33, a new member of the IL-1 family, is constitutively expressed in epithelial tissues and lymphoid organs and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic disease. However, the role of IL-33 in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of IL-33 in the pathophysiology of CRSwNP. METHODS: We investigated IL-33 expression and its cellular origins in the nasal polyps (NPs) of human subjects by immunoh
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a heterogeneous inflammatory disease with various underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms which translate to endotypes, in contrast to clinical phenotypes or histological subtypes. Defining endotypes can help clinicians predict disease prognosis, select subjects suitable for a specific therapy, and assess risks for comorbid conditions, including asthma. Therefore, with recent advancement of biologicals in CRS clinical trials, endotyping can be a breakthrough in tre
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pathogenesis of nasal polyp has been largely studied based on innate and adaptive immunity of sinonasal mucosa. So far, various factors have been identified that trigger an inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps. In this review, we summarized recently updated information in the understanding of mechanisms in the development of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyp (CRSwNP) focusing on Th2 inflammation. RECENT FINDINGS: Endotype of CRSwNP presented mainly T
BACKGROUND: Preoperative inflammation of the olfactory cleft may cause not only the obstruction of this area, but also damage of the olfactory neuroepithelium, resulting in anosmia. Therefore, the evaluation of the affected olfactory cleft by computed tomography (CT) might help predict postoperative olfaction. METHODS: Fifty-two patients who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyps were examined preoperatively and at 6 months after surgery.
Neutrophils are important effector cells of the innate immune response that fight pathogens by phagocytosis and degranulation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are released into the extracellular space to defend against invading pathogens. Although NETs play a defensive role against pathogens, excessive NETs can contribute to the pathogenesis of airway diseases. NETs are known to be directly cytotoxic to the lung epithelium and endothelium, highly involved in acute lung injury, and implicat
BACKGROUND: Non-eosinophilic nasal polyps (NPs) show less inflammatory changes and are less commonly associated with lower airway inflammatory disorders such as asthma, compared with eosinophilic NPs. However, the development of non-eosinophilic NPs which is a predominant subtype in Asian population still remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 81 patients (45 with non-eosinophilic NPs and 36 with eosinophilic NPs) were enrolled. Clinical information and computed tomography (CT), endoscopic, and hi
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Since the introduction of an endonasal endoscopic approach in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, reports of perioperative olfactory changes have presented conflicting results. We examined the incidence of olfactory loss in cases of endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery with skull base repair using the nasoseptal flap (NSF) and the effects of monopolar electrocautery commonly used in designing the NSF. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study. METHODS: Fifteen patients who u
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) shows heterogeneous immunologic features. Western studies revealed that CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) showed a predominantly type 1 immune response and CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) was characterized by type 2 immune response; however, the detailed immunologic profile of CRSsNP in Asian patients has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, we investigated the inflammatory endotypes of CRSsNP in Asian patients. Patients with CRSsNP (<mml:math xmlns:mml="http:
These findings suggested that IL-13- or IL-17A-induced RUNX2 contributed to new bone formation in CRS patients through its effect on the activity of osteoblasts. RUNX2 may be a novel target for preventing neoosteogenesis in CRS patients.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Several genes have been reported to be upregulated in human nasal polyps in previous genetic analyses. Among these genes, periostin is known to be overexpressed in nasal polyps obtained from aspirin-sensitive patients. Using periostin-null mice, we investigated the role of periostin in a murine model of eosinophilic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. METHODS: Eosinophilic rhinosinusitis was induced in both periostin-null and wild-type mice accord
