Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament: a review
Kriangsak Saetia, Dosang Cho, Sangkook Lee, Daniel H. Kim, Sang Don Kim
SJR Q1Neurosurgical FOCUSOA

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is most commonly found in men, the elderly, and Asian patients. There are many diseases associated with OPLL, such as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and other spondyloarthropathies. Several factors have been reported to be associated with OPLL formation and progression, including genetic, hormonal, environmental, and lifestyle factors. However, the pathogenesis of OPLL is still unclear. Most symptomatic

Avoiding abdominal flank bulge after anterolateral approaches to the thoracolumbar spine: cadaveric study and electrophysiological investigation
Daniel K. Fahim, Sang Don Kim, Dosang Cho, Sangkook Lee, Daniel H. Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery Spine

OBJECT: The thoracolumbar junction is frequently accessed through an anterolateral approach with the incision and muscle dissection extending from the lower thoracic region to the lateral border of the rectus abdominis muscle. This approach is frequently associated with the subsequent development of an unsightly and uncomfortable relaxation of the ipsilateral abdominal wall, or flank bulge, caused by denervation injury to the intercostal nerves. However, the etiology of this complication is not

hospital and was classified as grade 1. An examination found hypoesthesia at the T8 level and below and the deep tendon reflexes were reduced. We performed a chest computed tomography (CT) scan, but aortic dissection was not observed. We suspected hypokalemic periodic paralysis of both lower extremities and conducted laboratory studies; however, the results were negative. We then suspected thoracic myelopathy and thus provided steroid mega-dose therapy and conducted magnetic resonance imaging (M

Dosang Cho, Sang-Jin Kim, Eui-Kyo Seo, In Hyuk Chung, Chang‐Seok Oh
SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery SpineOA

OBJECT: Anterior surgical approaches to the lumbosacral disc spaces are being undertaken with increasing frequency. This increase and the use of minimally invasive techniques themselves have the potential to raise the incidence of major vessel injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine the variability of the vascular anatomy anterior to the lumbosacral spine and to draw conclusions regarding surgical accessibility of the L5-S1 disc space. METHODS: Thirty-five cadavers (age range at the

Broken Mayfield Head Clamp
Tae Hoon Lee, Sang Jin Kim, Dosang Cho
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

The Mayfield head clamp is the most frequently used head clamp system in the field of neurosurgery. In many cases, surgery is performed with complete reliance on the safety of the MHC. However, we experienced an extremely rare case in which the MHC accidentally broke while installing this system for immobilization of the head and neck. This is a case report with a brief review of the literature. The patient was a 58-year-old female who was scheduled to undergo cervical laminoplasty under the dia

Spontaneous Resolution of Nontraumatic Acute Spinal Subdural Hematoma
양나래, 김상진, 조용재, 조도상

Spinal subdural hematoma (SSDH) is an extremely uncommon condition. Causative factors include trauma, anticoagulant drug administration, hemostatic disorders, and vascular disorders such as arteriovenous malformations and lumbar punctures. Of SSDH cases, those that do not have any traumatic event can be considered cases of nontraumatic acute spinal subdural hematoma, which is known to have diverse clinical progress. Treatment typically consists of surgical decompression and cases in which the co

Chordoma is an extremely rare tumor and makes up 1% of the whole malignant tumors and 0.1~0.2% of intracranial tumors. Approximately half are in sacrococcygeal region, 35% in the base of skull, and 15% in vertebrae. Moreover, chordoma in sellar region is considered to be rarer, and most of the cases show non-specific symptoms such as headache, ophthalmodynia, diplopia, and amblyopia. The tumor looks very similar to pituitary adenoma in radiographic images, and therefore, clinicians may make a mi
