15The blood-retinal barrier (BRB) consists of tightly interconnected capillary endothelial cells covered with pericytes and glia, but the role of the pericytes in BRB regulation is not fully understood. Here, we show that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-B/PDGF receptor beta (PDGFRβ) signalling is critical in formation and maturation of BRB through active recruitment of pericytes onto growing retinal vessels. Impaired pericyte recruitment to the vessels shows multiple vascular hallmarks of di
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the functional effects of probiotic treatment on the gut microbiota, as well as liver and adipose gene expression in diet-induced obese mice. DESIGN: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks to induce obesity, and then randomized to receive HFD+probiotic (Lactobacillus curvatus HY7601 and Lactobacillus plantarum KY1032, n = 9) or HFD+placebo (n = 9) for another 10 weeks. Normal diet (ND) fed mice (n = 9) served as non-obese controls. RESULTS: Diet-i
Probiotic L. curvatus HY7601 and L. plantarum KY1032 combined suppressed the clinical characteristics of high-fructose-induced metabolic syndrome, therefore, may provide a natural alternative for the treatment of diet-induced metabolic syndrome.
This study demonstrates that engorgement of the vortex vein was observed more frequently in the eyes with PCV. Such a finding was associated with choroidal thickening and choroidal vascular hyperpermeability. These indicate that the engorgement of the vortex vein might be involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of PCV.
In patients with posterior keratoconus, IOL power calculation from conventional keratometry may be inaccurate, and secondary piggyback IOL procedure may be needed after cataract surgery.
Both TGF-β1 and inflammatory cytokines were highly expressed in the AH of patients with XFG. Considering that the levels of these cytokines are increased by oxidative stress and that they regulate the extracellular matrix, they may also play a role in intraocular pressure elevation in XFG.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate association profiles of lysyl oxidase-like 1 (LOXL1) gene polymorphisms with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 110 Korean patients with XFS and 127 control subjects were included in this study. Genotypes of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of LOXL1 (rs1048661, rs3825942, and rs2165241) were analyzed with direct sequencing, and a case-control association study was performed. Genotype frequenc
PURPOSE: We evaluated the applicability of the ISNT rule using Bruch's membrane opening minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) in healthy eyes and eyes with normal tension glaucoma (NTG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 124 healthy eyes and 136 NTG eyes were analyzed. Using 2-dimensional disc photographs, neuroretinal rim (NRR) thickness was measured at the superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal sides of the optic disc. Using spectral domain-optical coherence tomography, BMO-MRW was measured at the same
PURPOSE: To investigate the association between peripheral vasospasm and the visual field (VF) progression rate in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) with low-teen intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS: The finger temperature of 113 NTG patients was measured before and after exposure to ice water using a Temperature gun (cold pressor test). These patients had confirmed VF progression, despite a low-teen IOP during a follow-up period of >5 years. VF progression rates were calculated as the
BACKGROUND: Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been reported to reduce fibrosis in various tissues. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory role of ASCs on capsule formation by analyzing the histologic, cellular, and molecular changes in a mouse model of peri-implant fibrosis. We also investigated the fate and distribution of ASCs in the peri-implant capsule. METHODS: To establish a peri-implant fibrosis model, customized silicone implants were inserted into the dorsal site of C57BL/6
PURPOSE: To investigate the factors associated with an increase in the neuroretinal rim (NRR) thickness measured based on Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) after trabeculectomy in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: We analyzed the BMO-MRW using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) of patients with POAG who underwent a trabeculectomy for uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) despite maximal IOP reduction treatment. The BMO-MRW was meas
Autologous fat grafting is among the safest and most effective treatments for soft-tissue restoration and augmentation, and many efforts have been made to improve its efficiency, including adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) supplementation. Here, we investigated the role of Notch ligand Delta-like ligand 4 (Dll4) in angiogenesis within grafted fat and its effect on graft retention, as well as the effect of Dll4 inhibition on ASC supplementation. Using a murine fat graft model, we investigated the e
A 48-year-old man presented with an enlarging mass of the right upper eyelid over a 1-month period. Nine years prior, the patient was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the right maxillary sinus and underwent a total maxillectomy followed by local radiotherapy. Over the previous year, the patient had been treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for multiple organ metastases, including the spine, chest, and oral cavity. Ophthalmic examination revealed a white, round mass on the t
