15This paper models the U.S. strawberry market and examines how increasing imports from Mexico affect the prices and shipment values of California and Florida winter strawberries. The Synthetic Inverse Demand System is used to quantify the impact of Mexican shipments on the prices of strawberries. The estimation results indicate that market prices are responsive to supply from each of the three sources, suggesting an integrated, competitive national market. The simulation results suggest that rapi
Abstract This article examines how corn prices affect the demand for feed grains and the supply of livestock outputs. The differential approach to the theory of the multiproduct firm is employed to examine ex ante decisions about feed grain demand and livestock supply. The estimation results suggest that livestock producers have little flexibility in adjusting the demand for corn in response to an increase in corn prices. The substitutable relationship between corn and distillers’ grains contrib
Residential lawns provide diverse benefits, including social (e.g., enhancing humans’ physical and psychological well‐being), economic (e.g., increasing real estate values), and environmental (e.g., supporting local ecosystems) benefits. However, improper lawn fertilizer applications can cause adverse environmental consequences, such as excessive chemical runoff into adjoining watersheds leading to water contamination. Currently, the importance of eco‐friendly fertilizers to homeowners has not b
This paper examines how economic growth and renewable energy consumption are associated with air pollution using a dynamic panel approach. Focusing on several major air pollutants, namely, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide, this paper tests the environmental Kuznets hypothesis and determines whether the use of renewable energy sources contributes to a reduction in air pollution. Data from a balanced panel of 145 countries for the period between 2000 and 2014
Abstract Since 1996 there have been several suspension agreements between the United States and Mexico that set reference prices for imported Mexican tomatoes. The 2013 suspension agreement raised the reference prices of Mexican tomatoes by 43%. This study conducts an econometric analysis to examine the effects of reference prices on the dynamics of tomato price and farm revenue. Findings indicate that the suspension agreements have resulted in significant adjustments in the U.S. and Mexican tom
This study examines the interfuel substitution effects of biofuel use on carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. transportation sector. First, the dynamic linear logit model is used to examine substitution possibilities between biofuels and non-biofuels. The results reveal that petroleum demand is the most inelastic with respect to changes in petroleum prices since the transportation sector depends heavily on the use of petroleum. In addition, ethanol serves as a substitute for petroleum, showing t
Water quantity and quality concerns in urban environments have prompted conservation groups, governmental agencies, and policy makers to develop and promote residential water conservation programs, including restrictions on residential landscape irrigation practices and incentives for the adoption of water-efficient appliances. Previous literature links household characteristics, financial incentives, and demographic characteristics to the adoption of water-efficient appliances and overall water
This study identifies the factors determining the purchase frequencies of organic/natural fertilizers (ONFs) with a focus on do-it-yourself (DIY) consumers’ perceptions and motives. The estimation results of the generalized ordered logit model provide statistical evidence that environmental perceptions are critical factors in directing DIY consumers to purchase ONFs frequently. The results imply that educational programmes, informational campaigns, or advertisements to improve their perceptions
This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of the agricultural sector’s resource allocation and production decisions. This paper uses the differential systems with quasi-fixity to evaluate the complete agricultural production system, which examines the input and output linkages in terms of elasticities. The differential systems are estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation technique based on the two-step profit-maximizing procedure in theory. The results reveal that livestock productio
The growth of the U.S. economy has been accompanied with a significant rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. As CO2 emissions are dependent on regional climatic conditions and energy-related activities in states, this study examines the extent to which the distribution of CO2 emissions vary across nine climatically consistent regions in the U.S. The results obtained from the entropy approach reveal that the inequalities of CO2 emissions vary across the regions. While the total inequality of CO
This study examines factor substitution and energy intensity in the U.S. agricultural sector. Not only does this study focus on the substitution possibilities between energy and non-energy factors, but it also attempts to identify the factors that determine energy intensity. For the empirical analysis, a system of share equations for capital, energy and labor is estimated to calculate the price elasticities of factor demand. The findings reveal that energy demand is more elastic than the demand
This paper analyzes the dynamic effects of agricultural subsidies on food loss using the two-stage dynamic panel model. The results reveal that dynamic adjustments exist in agricultural productivity (0.56) and food loss (0.58), with a U-shaped curve between them. That is, food loss declines as productivity grows, but it rises after reaching a certain productivity level. In addition, the results show that agricultural subsidies induce an increase in food loss in the short and long terms. Particul
