15The impact of sarcopenia on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the prognostic impact of sarcopenia on coronary artery disease (CAD). A total of 475 patients with CAD who underwent successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and computed tomography (CT) were enrolled. The cross-sectional area of skeletal muscle at the first lumbar (L1) vertebral level was measured, and sex-specific cut-off values of L1 skeletal muscle index (L1 SMI; male <31
AIMS: Emotional stress is associated with future cardiovascular events. However, the mechanistic linkage of brain emotional neural activity with acute plaque instability is not fully elucidated. We aimed to prospectively estimate the relationship between brain amygdalar activity (AmygA), arterial inflammation (AI), and macrophage haematopoiesis (HEMA) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) as compared with controls. METHODS AND RESULTS: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed
In AF patients undergoing DES implantation, prolonged administration of TAT may be harmful due to the substantial increase in the risk for major bleeding without any reduction in MACCE.
Importance: Cardiovascular benefits of mild to moderate alcohol consumption need to be validated in the context of behavioral changes. The benefits of reduced alcohol consumption among people who drink heavily across different subtypes of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are unclear. Objective: To investigate the association between reduced alcohol consumption and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in individuals who drink heavily across different CVD subtypes. Design, Setting, and
Background and Purpose: Cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) analysis is an easily assessable method to evaluate sleep-disordered breathing (SDB); however, its prognostic impact in patients with acute ischemic stroke needs to be investigated. We performed a CPC analysis using Holter monitoring at the early stage of noncardioembolic ischemic stroke to investigate the prognostic effect of SDB on functional impairment at the 3-month follow-up. Methods: A total 615 patients with acute noncardioembolic isc
BACKGROUND: The phase angle (PhA) in bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) reflects the cell membrane integrity or body fluid equilibrium. We examined how the PhA aligns with previously known markers of acute heart failure (HF) and assessed its value as a screening tool. METHODS: PhA was measured in 50 patients with HF and 20 non-HF controls along with the edema index (EI), another BIA parameter suggestive of edema. Chest computed tomography-measured lung fluid content (LFC) was used to assess
Intracoronary optical coherence tomography (OCT) requires injection of flushing media for image acquisition. Alternative flushing media needs to be investigated to reduce the risk of contrast-induced renal dysfunction. We investigated the feasibility and safety of pentastarch (hydroxyethyl starch) for clinical OCT imaging. We prospectively enrolled 43 patients with 70 coronary lesions (46-stented; 24-native). Total 81 OCT pullback pairs were obtained by manual injection of iodine contrast, follo
Drug-coated balloons (DCB) are increasingly utilized in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but their effectiveness in coronary artery disease (CAD) needs further exploration. This study investigates the efficacy and safety of a DCB-based strategy for de novo left anterior descending artery (LAD) disease. Patients with de novo LAD lesions treated with DCB alone or combined with drug-eluting stents (DES) and were retrospectively enrolled from 2010 to 2023 (n = 268). The comparator group con
Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon gynecologic malignancy of mesodermal origin. Pulmonary metastasis of low-grade ESS can occur years and decades after the treatment of the primary disease. Low-grade ESS is frequently mistaken as benign uterine neoplasm like uterine leiomyoma, which can potentially lead to a misdiagnosis. We present a case of a 42-year-old woman with low-grade ESS, that initially presented as an incidental lung mass with multiple pulmonary nodules, seven
Sarcopenia is as a non-traditional risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Further investigation is required to elucidate the prognostic significance of computed tomography (CT)-based sarcopenia assessment in coronary artery disease (CAD). We prospectively enrolled 475 patients, who underwent coronary stent implantation and peri-procedural CT scans within one month. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was assessed cross-sectionally at the first lumbar vertebra (L1) level. The participant
Biliary duct injuries are frequently iatrogenic, being associated with surgery for gallbladder stones. However, blunt abdominal trauma such as a motor vehicle crash is a rare cause of extrahepatic biliary stricture. A few reports have been published on biliary strictures treated with endoscopic therapy. In the present study, we describe a suprapancreatic biliary stricture associated with mesenteric tear following road traffic accident. We performed endoscopic stent placement, which was successfu
