15Prolongation of the corrected QT (QTc) interval is associated with various anaesthetic drugs. The QTc prolongation may become more exacerbated during laryngoscopy and intubation, which is possibly caused by sympathetic stimulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fentanyl on the QTc interval during propofol induction in healthy patients. The patients were randomly allocated to receive either fentanyl (n = 25) or saline (n = 25) before induction. The QTc interval was signi
Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system associated with tracheal intubation causes corrected QT (QTc) interval prolongation. We postulated that the use of remifentanil during induction of anaesthesia might prevent this. Sixty unpremedicated, ASA grade 1 patients were selected and randomly allocated to receive either saline (group S), remifentanil 0.5 microg x kg(-1) (group R 0.5) or remifentanil 1.0 microg x kg(-1) (group R1.0) 1 min before laryngoscopy. The QTc interval was significantly
Pregabalin binds to the voltage-dependent calcium channel alpha2delta subunit and modulates the release of neurotransmitters, resulting in analgesic effects on neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain has both sympathetically maintained pain (SMP) and sympathetic independent pain (SIP) components. We studied the antiallodynic effects of pregabalin on tactile allodynia (TA) and cold allodynia (CA) in SMP-and SIP-dominant neuropathic pain models. Allodynia was induced by ligation of the L5 and L6 spinal
In this retrospective analysis of 10,575 patients who used fentanyl-based intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) after surgery, we evaluated difference between young and elderly patients on their characteristic of adverse effects. We reviewed the data collected from the patients who were provided IV-PCA for pain control following elective surgery under either general or spinal anesthesia between September 2010 and March 2014. Postoperative pain, incidence of PCA-related adverse effects
BACKGROUND: Sevoflurane may prolong the corrected QT (QTc) interval in healthy humans when administered for induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Little information is available about the dose-response relationship of sevoflurane on the QTc interval. We performed a pharmacodynamic analysis of the relationship between end-tidal sevoflurane concentration (CET) and the QTc. METHODS: Twenty-one patients aged 20-50 yr were enrolled in this study. Sevoflurane concentrations were progressively incre
Abstract Robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) is a minimally invasive procedure; however, some amount of surgical trauma that can trigger systemic inflammation remains. Moreover, pneumoperitoneum during RALRP induces ischemia–reperfusion injury (IRI). Propofol, an anesthetic, is known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In the present study, we compared the effects of propofol with those of desflurane on inflammation and IRI during RALRP via measurements of
Patients undergoing thyroidectomy with neck fully extended usually experience occipital headache and posterior neck pain. We have attempted to evaluate the effect of preoperative greater occipital nerve (GON) block on occipital headache and posterior neck pain after thyroidectomy. Eighty-two patients undergoing elective total thyroidectomy were randomly allocated to two groups. In block group, bilateral GON blocks with 0.25% bupivacaine were performed. The control group did not have any prior bl
BACKGROUND: There has been no study of the effect of post end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on intraocular or intracranial pressure during pneumoperitoneum with steep Trendelenburg positioning. We investigated the effects of 5 cmH2O of PEEP on intraocular pressure and optic nerve sheath diameter as a surrogate for intracranial pressure in robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. METHODS: Fifty patients scheduled for robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy were divided into a zer
BACKGROUND: The changes in hypnotic indicators in remimazolam sedation remain unclear. We investigated the correlation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) parameters with the effect-site remimazolam concentration and the depth of sedation in patients receiving a target-controlled infusion of remimazolam. METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled 35 patients (32 analyzed) who underwent lower extremity varicose vein surgery or lower extremity orthopedic surgery under spinal anesthesia.
The nasal route is preferred for fiberoptic intubation. Placing a lubricated endotracheal tube through the nostril can guide the fiberoptic scope towards the larynx. It would be helpful for optimal visualization of the vocal cord when the scope is passed through the endotracheal tube if the length of nares-vocal cord (NV length) could be predicted and the tip of the endotracheal tube could be placed close to the vocal cord. In this study we measured the NV length and examined the relationship be
BACKGROUND: The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block was recently suggested as a regional technique for managing acute pain after hip surgery. However, few anatomical studies have confirmed the spread of injectate during the PENG block. This cadaver study aimed to analyze injectate spread to the target nerves during single-injection ultrasound-guided PENG block. METHODS: Ultrasound-guided PENG block with 3 different injectate volumes (10, 20, or 30 mL) was performed in 18 cadavers. Injectate sp

Posterior neck pain following thyroidectomy is common because full neck extension is required during the procedure. We evaluated the effect of intra-operative transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on postoperative neck pain in patients undergoing total thyroidectomy under general anaesthesia. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups; 50 patients received transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation applied to the trapezius muscle and 50 patients acted as controls.
