15OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The study group for sinonasal tumors at the Korean Rhinologic Society analyzed the results of the Korean multicenter experience for sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) surgeries. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter cohort study and retrospective analysis. METHODS: In total, 939 patients diagnosed with sinonasal IP treated between 1998 and 2007 at 17 university hospitals were enrolled. Demographic data and information about previous surgeries, the origin and involved site of the tumor,
It has been observed that the majority of the kernel weights and input activations in the state-of-the-art convolution neural networks (CNNs) have zero values. This article proposes a CNN hardware accelerator that exploits this property to achieve significant performance and energy improvements.
It is imperative to accelerate convolutional neural networks (CNNs) due to their ever-widening application areas from server, mobile to IoT devices. Based on the fact that CNNs can be characterized by a significant amount of zero values in both kernel weights and activations, we propose a novel hardware accelerator for CNNs exploiting zero weights and activations. We also report a zero-induced load imbalance problem, which exists in zero-aware parallel CNN hardware architectures, and present a z
Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most effective treatment modality, poor adherence still remains a problem for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment and there is little evidence regarding how this might be improved. This study aims to analyze the anatomic and clinical factors of OSA subjects who failed to comply with CPAP therapy. The medical records of 47 OSA subjects who received CPAP therapy as a first-line treatment modality were retrospectively reviewed. The medic
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common chronic diseases in adults and severely affects quality of life in patients. Although various etiologic and pathogenic mechanisms of CRS have been proposed, the causes of CRS remain uncertain. Abnormalities in the coagulation cascade may play an etiologic role in many diseases, such as asthma and other inflammatory conditions. While studies on the relationship between asthma and dysregulated coagulation have been reported, the role of the co
Recently, deep learning for automated sleep stage classification has been introduced with promising results. However, as many challenges impede their routine application, automatic sleep scoring algorithms are not widely used. Typically, polysomnography (PSG) uses multiple channels for higher accuracy; however, the disadvantages include a requirement for a patient to stay one or more nights in the lab wearing uncomfortable sensors and wires. To avoid the inconvenience caused by the multiple chan
Tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising source of circulating biomarkers for liquid biopsies. However, understanding the heterogeneous physical and biochemical properties of EVs originating from multiple complex biogenesis pathways remains a major challenge. Here, we introduce EV-Ident for preparation of subpopulations of EVs in three different size fractions: large EVs (EV200 nm; 200–1 000 nm), medium EVs (EV100 nm; 100–200 nm), and small EVs (EV20 nm; 20–100 nm).
INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). The improvement of ED after medical therapy including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or mandibular advancement devices (MADs) is still controversial. Furthermore, the efficacy of surgical treatment has been little investigated. AIM: The aim of this nonrandomized prospective study was to evaluate the effects of surgical (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty [UPPP]) and nonsurgical approaches (CPAP
Transmitted light microscopy can readily visualize the morphology of living cells. Here, we introduce artificial-intelligence-powered transmitted light microscopy (AIM) for subcellular structure identification and labeling-free functional analysis of live cells. AIM provides accurate images of subcellular organelles; allows identification of cellular and functional characteristics (cell type, viability, and maturation stage); and facilitates live cell tracking and multimodality analysis of immun
BACKGROUND: It has been well known that pediatric allergic rhinitis was associated with poor performance at school due to attention deficit. However, there were no cohort studies for the effect of treatment of allergic rhinitis on attention performance in pediatric population. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether attention performance was improved after treatment in children with allergic rhinitis. METHODS: In this ARCO-Kids (Allergic Rhinitis Cohort Study for Kids), consecutiv
OBJECTIVES: Videostrobokymography (VSK) has recently been introduced. The aim of this study was to analyze vibratory patterns and objective parameters in various benign vocal fold lesions using VSK and to examine the efficacy of VSK in clinical applications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using VSK, we analyzed the vibration patterns of normal vocal folds, various benign lesions such as nodules, polyps, cysts and Reinke's edema and cases of unilateral vocal fold paralysis. We also calculated the objectiv
The symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis such as nasal obstruction, purulent rhinorrhea, and postnasal drip were commonly present in both primary and secondary infections, and the sphenoid sinus was commonly involved in secondary infection. The radiological findings in fungal sinusitis included haziness, calcification, and bone destruction of the involved sinuses. CT scans in 80% of the primary and 69% of the secondary cases revealed calcific densities in a paranasal soft tissue mass. Twenty-eight
Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a highly efficacious treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), there is a need for alternative treatment options, such as sleep surgeries and mandibular advancement devices (MADs), to overcome the limitations of CPAP.This study aimed to analyze the therapeutic outcomes of OSA subjects who were treated with a MAD, and to estimate the clinical impact of MAD as a first-line treatment for OSA.Forty-seven patients diagnosed with OSA received a
