A measurement of community disaster resilience in Korea
Dong Keun Yoon, Jung Eun Kang, Samuel D. Brody
SJR Q1Journal of Environmental Planning and Management

Building a community that is resilient to disasters has become one of the main goals of disaster management. Communities that are more disaster resilient often experience less impact from the disaster and reduced recovery periods afterwards. This study develops a methodology for constructing a set of indicators measuring Community Disaster Resilience Index (CDRI) in terms of human, social, economic, environmental, and institutional factors. In this study, the degree of community resilience to na

Identifying Critical Sources of Bridge Deterioration in Cold Regions through the Constructed Bridges in North Dakota
Yail J. Kim, Dong Keun Yoon
SJR Q1Journal of Bridge Engineering

This paper presents the performance of constructed bridges in cold regions through examining the bridges in North Dakota that is one of the coldest regions in the United States. Unique approach of a combined multiple regression and geographic information system technology is employed to evaluate the performance and to identify the critical sources affecting deterioration of the 5,289 bridges sampled from the National Bridge Inventory database inspected between 2006 and 2007. Typical parameters e

Analyzing Thermal Characteristics of Urban Streets Using a Thermal Imaging Camera: A Case Study on Commercial Streets in Seoul, Korea
Sugie Lee, Hyunbin Moon, Yeri Choi, Dong Keun Yoon
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Due to continuing city growth and global warming over the past decades, urban heat island (UHI) effects, referring to the phenomena wherein the ambient air temperatures in cities are higher than those in rural areas, have become a serious threat to urban populations. Impervious surfaces, buildings with low-albedo materials, and a lack of vegetated areas are the major causes of poor urban thermal environments, particularly during the summer. Previous research has focused primarily on the thermal

Evaluating the effect of compact urban form on air quality in Korea
Jung Eun Kang, Dong Keun Yoon, Hyun-Joo Bae
SJR Q1Environment and Planning B Urban Analytics and City Science

Air quality is affected by the interplay between emission sources and urban planning factors such as land use, built environment, development pattern, and transportation. Few empirical studies have been conducted to determine the influence of urban form characteristics on air quality in Korea. Thus, the purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between urban form and air pollution, focusing on ozone pollution in Korea. The characteristics of urban form include density, concentratio

Examining Vulnerability Factors to Natural Disasters with a Spatial Autoregressive Model: The Case of South Korea
Seunghoo Jeong, Dong Keun Yoon
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Socially and economically marginalized people and environmentally vulnerable areas are disproportionately affected by natural hazards. Identifying populations and places vulnerable to disasters is important for disaster management, and crucial for mitigating their economic consequences. From the fields of geography, emergency management, and urban planning, several approaches and methodologies have been used to identify significant vulnerability factors affecting the incidence and impact of disa

Factors Contributing to Disaster Evacuation: The Case of South Korea
Dongkwan Lee, So–Yeon Yoon, Eun-Seon Park, Yuseung Kim, Dong Keun Yoon
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

There has been increasing interest in effective evacuation in response to natural disasters, particularly in understanding human evacuation behavior. It is important to determine the factors affecting evacuation decision making to promote prompt evacuation. This study focuses on the effects of past experiences on evacuation behavior in South Korea, especially the evacuation drill experience. Additionally, the influence of demographic and socio-economic characteristics on evacuation behavior is c

Factors contributing to business actions in response to climate change in Korea
Jung Eun Kang, Dong Keun Yoon, Jinyoung Rhee
SJR Q1Journal of Risk Research

Climate change is a growing problem and has been highlighted as a global issue. Empirical evidence increasingly indicates its obvious potential risks to humans and society. As members of this society, business organizations face greatly diverse climate change-related risks that they must recognize and respond to. However, gaps exist between scientific evidence and the actions of business organizations. Few empirical studies have examined the business organizations’ actions taken in response to c
