Stress in adulthood can have a profound effect on physiology and behavior, but the extent to which prolonged maternal stress affects the brain function of offspring when they are adult remains primarily unknown. In the present work, chronic immobilization stress to pregnant mice affected fetal growth and development. When pups born from stressed mice were reared to adulthood in an environment identical to that of nonstressed controls, several physiological parameters were essentially unaltered.

Mitochondrial membrane depolarization and the selective death of dopaminergic neurons by rotenone: protective effect of coenzyme Q10
Younghye Moon, Kun Ho Lee, June‐Hee Park, Dongho Geum, Kyungjin Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Neurochemistry

Chronic exposure to the pesticide rotenone induces a selective degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons and reproduces the features of Parkinson's disease in experimental animals. This action is thought to be relevant to its inhibition of the mitochondrial complex I, but the precise mechanism of this suppression in selective neuronal death is still elusive. Here we investigate the mechanism of dopaminergic neuronal death mediated by rotenone in primary rat mesencephalic neurons. Low co

Disturbances in circadian rhythms have been suggested as a possible cause of bipolar disorder (BD). Included in this study were 31 mood episodes of 26 BD patients, and 18 controls. Circadian rhythms of BD were evaluated at admission, at 2-week intervals during hospitalization, and at discharge. All participants wore wrist actigraphs during the studies. Saliva and buccal cells were obtained at 8:00, 11:00, 15:00, 19:00, and 23:00 for two consecutive days. Collected saliva and buccal cells were us

SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

The present study examined phosphorylation-dependent cellular localization and the thermoprotective role of heat shock protein (HSP) 25 in hippocampal HiB5 cells. HSP25 was induced and phosphorylated by heat shock (at 43 degrees C for 3 h). HSP25, which was located in the cytoplasm in the normal condition, translocated into the nucleus after the heat shock. Transfection experiments with hsp27 mutants in which specific serine phosphorylation residues (Ser(78) and Ser(82)) were substituted with al

SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Genome-wide association study (GWAS) has identified genetic variants in the promoter region of the high temperature requirement factor A1 (HTRA1) gene associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As a secreted serine protease, HTRA1 has been reported to interact with members of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family and regulate their signaling pathways. Growth differentiation factor 6 (GDF6), a member of the TGF-β family, is involved in ectoderm patterning and eye developmen

SJR Q1Molecular NeurobiologyOA

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal, adult-onset, progressive neurodegenerative disorder with no known cure. Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) was the first identified protein associated with familial ALS (fALS). Recently, TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) has been found to be a principal component of ubiquitinated cytoplasmic inclusions in neurons and glia in ALS. However, it remains unclear whether these ALS-linked proteins partly have a shared pathogenesis. Here, we determine the

SJR Q2Psychiatry InvestigationOA

Numerous hypotheses have been put forth over the years to explain the development of bipolar disorder. Of these, circadian rhythm hypotheses have gained much importance of late. While the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivation hypothesis and the monoamine hypothesis somewhat explain the pathogenic mechanism of depression, they do not provide an explanation for the development of mania/hypomania. Interestingly, all patients with bipolar disorder display significant disruption o

The present study shows the expression profile and function of the homeobox gene, satb2 during zebrafish embryonic development. Satb2 was ubiquitously expressed from the 1 cell stage to the 10-somite stage in zebrafish embryos. Satb2 showed stage-specific expression profiles such as in the pronephric duct at 24 hpf, the branchial arches at 36 hpf, and the ganglion cell layer of the retina and fins at 48 hpf. Additionally, satb2 knockdown embryos were arrested at 50-60% epiboly, and transplantati

Neurogenesis occurs spontaneously in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle in adult rodent brain, but it has long been debated whether there is sufficient adult neurogenesis in human SVZ. Subcallosal zone (SCZ), a posterior continuum of SVZ closely associated with posterior regions of cortical white matter, has also been reported to contain adult neural stem cells (aNSCs) in both rodents and humans. However, little is known whether SCZ-derived aNSC (SCZ-aNSCs) can produce cortic

Differential Expression of BNIP Family Members of BH3-Only Proteins during the Development and after Axotomy in the Rat
Bongki Cho, So Yoen Choi, Ok‐hee Park, Woong Sun, Dongho Geum
SJR Q1Molecules and CellsOA

The BNIPs (BCL2 and adenovirus E1B 19 kDa interacting proteins) are a subfamily of BCL2 family proteins typically containing a single BCL2 homology 3 (BH3) domain. BNIPs exert important roles in two major degradation processes in cells - apoptosis and autophagy. Although it is known that the function of BNIPs is transcriptionally regulated under hypoxic conditions in tumors, their regulation in the developing brain and neurons following the induction of apoptosis/autophagy is largely unknown. SJR Q1FEBS LettersOA

XNP/ATRX, a causative gene of X-linked alpha-thalassemia/mental retardation syndrome, encodes an SNF2 family ATPase/helicase protein. To better understand the role of XNP/ATRX in development, we isolated and characterized a Drosophila XNP/ATRX homolog, dXNP, which contains highly conserved SNF2 and helicase domains. Ectopically expressed dXNP induced strong apoptosis in the developing eye and wing, but did not affect cell cycle progression or the expression of wingless and engrailed, essential r
