15Regular physical activity (PA) is known to reduce the risk of serious community-acquired infections. We examined the association of PA with the morbidity and mortality resulting from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection in the South Korean population. Patients who tested positive for severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 and who underwent public health screening between 2014 and 2017 (n = 6288) were included. Age- and sex-matched controls (n = 125,772) were randomly selected from the Korean
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction on predicting postoperative pulmonary edema and major cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients who underwent low- or intermediate-risk noncardiac surgery. METHODS: A total of 692 patients aged >60 years who underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) before undergoing elective low- or intermediate-risk noncardiac surgery were prospectively enrolled. The medical history and TTE variables were
Heart failure (HF) management guidelines recommend individualized assessments based on HF phenotypes. Adiposity is a known risk factor for HF. Recently, there has been an increased interest in organ-specific adiposity, specifically the role of the epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), in HF risk. EAT is easily assessable through various imaging modalities and is anatomically and functionally connected to the myocardium. In pathological conditions, EAT secretes inflammatory cytokines, releases excessi
The LGE prevalence in patients with acute CO poisoning with elevated TnI levels, with no underlying cardiovascular diseases and eligible for CMRI, was 69.2%; this proportion primarily comprised patients with a midwall injury. Of the 37 patients who underwent follow-up CMRI, most chronic phase images showed no interval change. Myocardial fibrosis detected on CMR images was related to acute myocardial dysfunction and subacute deterioration of myocardial strain on TTE. (Cardiac Magnetic Resonance I
Background: Statins have a pleiotropic effect in addition to a lipid-lowering effect. Several studies have demonstrated that statins may reduce the mortality and severity of infectious diseases, such as pneumonia or sepsis. We investigated the protective effects of various statins on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using a population-based cohort covering the entire Korean population. Methods: Consecutive patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 2020 and May 2020 were enrolled fr
AIMS: Whether medication adherence to angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) in real-world practice is associated with the reduced risk of all-cause mortality or hospitalization relative to that with traditional renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockade remains unclear. This study investigated the influence of medication adherence of ARNI and traditional RAS blockade in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). METHOD: We conducted a nationwide longitudinal cohort study with
BACKGROUND: Understanding national trends of heart failure (HF) is crucial for establishing prevention and treatment strategies. We aimed to investigate the 11-year trends of HF in the South Korean population. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we identified 3,446,256 patients with HF between 2004 and 2014. RESULTS: The prevalence of HF was 1.42% in 2004, steadily increasing to 1.98% in 2014. However, the age-adjusted prevalence of HF remained stable (1.43% in
OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) provides protective effects against cardiovascular diseases, including ischaemic heart disease. However, recommending moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) to patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) raises concerns owing to potential risk of recurrent ACS or fatal arrhythmias. This study investigated the association between longitudinal PA changes following an ACS diagnosis and subsequent cardiovascular outcomes, including non-fatal coronary events, non-fat
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of periodontitis in the risk of acute and chronic coronary syndrome with compounding factors, including sociodemographic factors and medication use. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used nationwide, population-based data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort database (514,866 individuals, 40-79 years). Propensity score matching was used for analysis. Information of subjects for 12 years was included. Socioeconomic and
