SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery Spine

OBJECT: Symptomatic multisegment disease is most common at the C5-6 and C6-7 levels, and two-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is performed most often at these levels. Therefore, it may be clinically important to know whether a C5-7 fusion affects the superior C4-5 segment. A biomechanical study was carried out using cadaveric cervical spine specimens to determine the effect of lower two-level anterior cervical fusion on intradiscal pressure and segmental motion at the superio

Irreversible and permanent damage develop immediately adjacent to the region of reduced cerebral blood perfusion in stroke patients. Currently, the proven thrombolytic treatment for stroke, tissue plasminogen activator, is only effective when administered within 3 h after stroke. These disease characteristics should be taken under consideration in developing any therapeutic intervention designed to widen the narrow therapeutic range, especially cell-based therapy. Over the past several years, ou

It is now well accepted that the brain is able to generate newborn neurons from a population of resident multipotential neural stem cells (NSCs) located in two discrete regions of the brain. The capacity for neurogenesis appears to diminish over the lifespan of an organism. Methods to potentiate the proliferation of new neuronal or glial cells within the central nervous system from resident NSCs could have therapeutic potential following an insult, such as stroke, or to replace lost cells as a r

Current treatments of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and stroke are only partially effective. Consequently new therapies such as cell transplantation are of great interest. Cell therapy has shown promising results in animal models and in limited clinical trials. This form of treatment does have its own concerns, such as what factors control the survival and/or migration of the transplanted cells and how do they exert their benefit. Recent studies on tracking the transplants,

The annual meeting of the American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair (ASNTR) has always introduced us to top-notch and up-to-date approaches for regenerative medicine related to neuroscience, ranging from stem cell-based therapy to novel drugs. The 16th ASNTR meeting focused on a variety of different topics, including the unknown pathogenesis or mechanisms of specific neurodegenerative diseases, stem cell biology, and development of novel alternative medicines or devices. Newly developed ste

SJR Q1ACS Sensors

Herein, we develop colorimetric multigas sensor arrays assembling chemo-reactive fluorescent patch arrays and 10 × 10 indium gallium zinc oxide phototransistor arrays and apply them to an artificial olfactory platform to recognize five different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Porous nanofibers, coupled with two organic emitters and emitting fluorescence, rapidly respond to gas-phased VOCs and offer unique fluorescent patterns associated with particular gas conditions, including gas kinds, co

A rare case involving multiple intracranial aneurysms with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in a child, accompanied by unilateral fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) of the renal artery, is reported. A 12-year-old girl presented with secondary hypertension and fourth-ventricle IVH. Cerebral angiography showed multiple aneurysms in the anterior communicating artery, right posterior cerebral artery, and right superior cerebellar artery. Abdominal angiography revealed marked stenosis and dilatation of t

BACKGROUND: The relationship between air pollutants, including fine particles (particulate matter [PM] < 10 μm and < 2.5 μm), and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has been inadequately studied, and the results remain inconclusive. In this study, we attempted to investigate the relationship between air pollutant levels and aneurysmal SAH. METHODS: Ninety-two patients diagnosed with aneurysmal SAH were retrospectively included in the study. Medical records were reviewed, and levels of poll

Human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) are capable of immunomodulation and regeneration after neural injury. For these reasons, hAMSCs have been investigated as a promising stem cell candidate for stroke treatment. However, noninvasive experiments studying the effects of grafted stem cells in the host brain have not yet been reported. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which can be collected without sacrificing the subject, is involved in physiological control of the brain and reflects th

SJR Q1Nanoscale

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is the extravasation of blood into the subarachnoid space and is fatal in most cases. Platinum coils have been used to fill the hemorrhage site and prevent the extravasation of blood. Here we explored the use of Pt-coated polymer nanofibers (NF) to prevent blood extravasation and were able to achieve improved results in vitro. The polymer nanofibers were produced via electrospinning and were subsequently electroplated with Pt, resulting in metalized nanof

Thrombosed Giant Aneurysm of the Pericallosal Artery With Inconclusive Findings of Multiple Neuroimaging Studies -Case Report-

A 65-year-old woman presented with a thrombosed giant pericallosal artery aneurysm manifesting as headache and memory loss that developed over a 2-year period. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and conventional and CT angiography could not establish the differential diagnosis. Open craniotomy revealed the mass as thrombosed giant aneurysm from the pericallosal artery. Direct clipping with thrombectomy was performed successfully with an uneventful postoperative course. Th
