As virtual reality technology continues to attract significant attention in clinical psychology, especially in the treatment of phobias, physiological monitoring is increasingly considered as an objective measurement tool for studying participants. There are few studies, however, of the normal physiological response to virtual environments or reactions to different virtual environments. The goal of this study is to analyze nonphobic participants' physiological reactions to two virtual environmen

Dopamine (DA) modulates central neuronal activity through both phasic (second to second) and tonic (minutes to hours) terminal release. Conventional fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), in combination with carbon fiber microelectrodes, has been used to measure phasic DA release in vivo by adopting a background subtraction procedure to remove background capacitive currents. However, measuring tonic changes in DA concentrations using conventional FSCV has been difficult because background capaciti

Abstract Although neurotransmitters are key substances closely related to evaluating degenerative brain diseases as well as regulating essential functions in the body, many research efforts have not been focused on direct observation of such biochemical messengers, rather on monitoring relatively associated physical, mechanical, and electrophysiological parameters. Here, a bioresorbable silicon‐based neurochemical analyzer incorporated with 2D transition metal dichalcogenides is introduced as a

IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine

Virtual reality therapy (VRT), based on this sophisticated technology, has been recently used in the treatment of subjects diagnosed with acrophobia, a disorder that is characterized by marked anxiety upon exposure to heights and avoidance of heights. Conventional VR systems for the treatment of acrophobia have limitations, over-costly devices or somewhat unrealistic graphic scenes. The goal of this study was to develop an inexpensive and more realistic virtual environment (VE) in which to perfo

Although fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) has been widely used for in vivo neurochemical detection, the sensitivity and selectivity of the technique can be further improved. In this study, we develop fast cyclic square-wave voltammetry (FCSWV) as a novel voltammetric technique that combines large-amplitude cyclic square-wave voltammetry (CSWV) with background subtraction. A large-amplitude, square-shaped potential was applied to induce cycling through multiple redox reactions within a square

In vivo, systematic desensitization has been effective in the treatment of agoraphobia. Currently, computer and display technology allow the creation of virtual reality environments. Virtual reality therapy (VRT), based on this sophisticated technology, has been used in the treatment of subjects who have been diagnosed with agoraphobia, a disorder that is defined as an extreme, irrational fear of being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing. These studies, h

Correlation between Inter-Blink Interval and Episodic Encoding during Movie Watching

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Human eye blinking is cognitively suppressed to minimize loss of visual information for important real-world events. Despite the relationship between eye blinking and cognitive state, the effect of eye blinks on cognition in real-world environments has received limited research attention. In this study, we focused on the temporal pattern of inter-eye blink interval (IEBI) during movie watching and investigated its relationship with episodic memory. As a control condition, 24 healthy subjects wat

Fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) has been commonly used to measure extracellular neurotransmitter concentrations in the brain. Due to the unstable nature of the background currents inherent in FSCV measurements, analysis of FSCV data is limited to very short amounts of time using traditional background subtraction. In this paper, we propose the use of a zero-phase high pass filter (HPF) as the means to remove the background drift. Instead of the traditional method of low pass filtering across

Role of low‐ and high‐frequency oscillations in the human hippocampus for encoding environmental novelty during a spatial navigation task

The hippocampus plays a key role in the encoding and retrieval of information related to novel environments during spatial navigation. However, the neural basis for these processes in the human hippocampus remains unknown because it is difficult to directly measure neural signals in the human hippocampus. This study investigated hippocampal neural oscillations involved in encoding novel environments during spatial navigation in a virtual environment. Seven epileptic patients with implanted intra

SJR Q1Analytical ChemistryOA

Although N-shaped fast scan cyclic voltammetry (N-FSCV) is well-established as an electroanalytical method to measure extracellular serotonin concentrations in vivo, it is in need of improvement in both sensitivity and selectivity. Based on our previous studies using fast cyclic square-wave voltammetry (FCSWV) for in vivo dopamine measurements, we have modified this technique to optimize the detection of serotonin in vivo. A series of large amplitude square-shaped potentials

These results provide evidence that brain signals are different depending on the movement conditions or effectors. Thus, the two-staged method could be useful if BCIs are used to generalize for both unimanual and bimanual operations in human applications and in various neuro-prosthetics fields.
