Sublingual immunotherapy in allergic rhinitis
Doo Hee Han, Chae‐Seo Rhee
SJR Q2Asia Pacific AllergyOA

Current treatment options for allergic rhinitis (AR) include allergen avoidance and environmental control, pharmacotherapy, nasal surgery and immunotherapy. Among these, immunotherapy is the only therapeutic option that modifies fundamental immunologic mechanism by inducing desensitization. Specific allergen immunotherapy has been used for 1 century since 1911 and subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) has been demonstrated to be effective in asthma and AR. However, SCIT has several disadvantages suc

OBJECTIVES: There is a great deal of interest in the possibility that environmental factors may influence the risk of developing allergic rhinitis (AR) in early life. We investigated the simultaneous effects of mode of delivery and duration of breastfeeding on the development of AR in children. METHODS: Data from 1,374 children participating in the Allergic Rhinitis Cohort Study for kids (ARCO-kids study) was analyzed. All subjects were divided into AR or non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) groups. Impact of allergic rhinitis on quality of life after adenotonsillectomy for pediatric sleep‐disordered breathing
Dong‐Kyu Kim, Doo Hee Han
SJR Q1International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is an undisputed major contributor to the development of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). However, some children with SDB have experienced a worsening of quality of life (QOL) after adenotonsillectomy. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors of deteriorating QOL after adenotonsillectomy. METHODS: This was an observational cohort study at a single institute and consisted of 70 children with SDB who underwent adenotonsillectomy. The Q

Diesel exhaust particles increase nasal symptoms and IL-17A in house dust mite-induced allergic mice

Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), traffic-related air pollutants, are considered environmental factors adversely affecting allergic diseases. However, the immunological basis for the adjuvant effects of DEP in allergic rhinitis (AR) remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of DEP exposure on AR using a mouse model. BALB/c mice sensitized to house dust mite (HDM) were intranasally challenged with HDM in the presence and absence of DEP. Allergic symptom scores, serum t

Primary and secondary fungal infections of the paranasal sinuses: Clinical features and treatment outcomes

SJR Q2Acta Oto-Laryngologica

The symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis such as nasal obstruction, purulent rhinorrhea, and postnasal drip were commonly present in both primary and secondary infections, and the sphenoid sinus was commonly involved in secondary infection. The radiological findings in fungal sinusitis included haziness, calcification, and bone destruction of the involved sinuses. CT scans in 80% of the primary and 69% of the secondary cases revealed calcific densities in a paranasal soft tissue mass. Twenty-eight

OBJECTIVES: To present the aesthetic and functional outcomes of nasal alar reconstruction in Asian patients and to propose a working surgical algorithm. METHODS: Seventeen patients underwent nasal alar reconstruction at a university-based facial plastic surgery practice from March 1, 1998, through February 28, 2010. The male-female ratio was 10:7, with a median age of 59 years (range, 34-78 years), and the mean follow-up duration was 64 months. RESULTS: The defect was mostly caused by basal cell

TSS improved in both groups, and the change was comparable in the 2 groups (ΔTSS, 5.1 vs 5.3; p = 0.538). Also among the young age group, ΔTSS did not significantly differ between school-age children and adolescents (5.2 vs 4.9, p = 0.429). Thirty-five out of 54 youngsters (64.8%) and 11 out of 22 adults (50.0%) showed improvement in TSS over 30%. AMS were significantly decreased in both groups. ΔAMS tended to be higher in the young age group, but the difference did not reach statistical signifi

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Fungus ball is the most common form of non-invasive fungal sinusitis, and maxillary sinus is the most commonly involved site. Maxillary sinus fungus ball (MFB) accounts for a considerable proportion of unilateral maxillary sinusitis. The prevalence of MFB has recently increased; however, its contributing factors are unclear. This study analyzed the association between MFB and dental implants. One hundred one patients who underwent unilateral maxillary sinus surgery were divided into two groups b

Allergic rhinitis (AR), a common chronic disease, impairs patients’ quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to determine the effect of perceived stress on disease-related QoL in AR patients. There were 741 patients from eight medical centers of the Allergic Rhinitis Cohort (ARCO) study. Data on sociodemographics, chronic conditions, AR severity, perceived stress level and Rhinoconjunctivitis QoL Questionnaire (RQLQ) results, and laboratory test findings were collected. OBJECTIVE: To investigate predictive parameters at baseline and during the early response to sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for house dust mites in allergic rhinitis patients. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Patients were treated with SLIT for at least 3 years and serological tests performed at baseline and at 1-year follow-up to investigate predictive parameters. Background There are only a few studies in which the clinical efficacy of SLIT has been compared between children and adults. In addition, there is a lack of research on other factors, associated with the treatment, including immunological parameters and quality of life (QOL). Objective To compare the effects of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in adults and children on various factors: clinical efficacy, quality of life (QOL), satisfaction, immunological parameters, and adverse events.
