15BACKGROUND: -Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in the young, is characterized by cardiac hypertrophy, myocyte disarray, and interstitial fibrosis. We propose that hypertrophy and fibrosis are secondary to the activation of trophic and mitotic factors and, thus, potentially reversible. We determined whether the blockade of angiotensin II, a known cardiotrophic factor, could reverse or attenuate interstitial fibrosis in a transgenic mouse model of hum
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents (DESs) versus minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) surgery in the management of patients with proximal left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery stenosis. Until recent years, despite the advantages of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with bare metal stent implantation, such as shorter hospital stays and recovery time, MIDCAB showed better r
The human body contains different endothelial cell types and differences in their angiogenic potential are poorly understood. We compared the functional angiogenic ability of human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) using a three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic cell culture system. HAECs and HUVECs exhibited similar cellular characteristics in a 2D culture system; however, in the 3D microfluidic angiogenesis system, HAECs exhibited stronger angioge
Incidence rate of metabolic syndrome was the highest in subjects with low serum adiponectin levels and high visceral fat area. Higher TG/HDL ratio in these subjects suggested insulin resistance may contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome.
To identify potential downstream targets of Nanog, a key transcription factor in the maintenance of pluripotency of embryonic stem (ES) and embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, global gene expression profiles in Nanog small interfering RNA (siRNA)-transfected P19 EC stem cells were performed using cDNA, 60-mer, and 30-mer microarray platforms. The putative Nanog target genes identified by Nanog silencing were verified using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction after Nanog overexpression. D
Adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) transplantation has been proposed to improve cardiac function and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Recently, cell sheet technology has been investigated for its potential applicability in cardiac injury. However, a detailed comparison of the functional recovery in the injured myocardium between cell sheets and conventional cell injection has not been adequately examined. ADSCs were isolated from the inguinal fat tissue of ICR mice. Three groups of AMI induction
OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the long-term clinical outcomes of patients with coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation, compared with patients without CAA. BACKGROUND: CAA developed after DES implantation is a rare but associated with poor clinical outcome. METHODS: We retrospectively compared 78 patients with CAA after DES implantation with 269 patients without CAA who underwent DES implantation for complex lesions (controls). The primary endpoint was d
Clopidogrel is the mainstay for antiplatelet treatment after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The relationship of platelet reactivity and genetic polymorphism with clinical outcomes with newer-generation drug-eluting stents is unclear. We analysed 4,587 patients for the most powerful single-nucleotide polymorphisms (CYP2C19, CYP2C9, ABCB1, PON1, and P2Y12) related to on-treatment platelet reactivity (OPR). The optimal cut-off value of high OPR for major adverse thrombotic events was 266
Nanoscaled surface patterning is an emerging potential method of directing the fate of stem cells. We adopted nanoscaled pillar gradient patterned cell culture plates with three diameter gradients [280–360 (GP 280/360), 200–280 (GP 200/280), and 120–200 nm (GP 120/200)] and investigated their cell fate-modifying effect on multipotent fetal liver kinase 1-positive mesodermal precursor cells (Flk1 + MPCs) derived from embryonic stem cells. We observed increased cell proliferation and colony format
