15Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide and is associated with high mortality rates despite the continuously advancing treatment strategies. Glucose is essential for cancer cell metabolism owing to the Warburg effect. During the process of glucose metabolism, various glycolytic metabolites, such as serine and glycine metabolites, are produced and other metabolic pathways, such as the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), are associated with the process. Glucose is transported i
BACKGROUND: We assessed the expression of methylation-related proteins 5-meC, DNMT1, and ISL-1 in breast cancer and evaluated their relationship to clinicopathological factors. METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining for ER, PR, HER-2, Ki-67, 5-meC, DNMT1, and ISL-1 were performed on 348 breast cancer samples in tissue microarray. Samples were subgrouped into luminal A, luminal B, HER-2, or triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) according to immunohistochemical staining for ER, PR, HER-2, and Ki-67.
Arachidonic acid (AA) is generated via Rac-mediated phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activation in response to growth factors and cytokines and is implicated in cell growth and gene expression. In this study, we show that AA activates the stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (SAPK/JNK) in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Indomethacin and nordihydroguaiaretic acid, potent inhibitors of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, respectively, did not exert inhibitory effects on AA-induced SAPK/J

The morbidity and mortality of breast cancer is mostly due to a distant metastasis, especially to the bone. Many factors may be responsible for bone metastasis in breast cancer, but interactions between tumor cells and other surrounding types of cells, and cytokines secreted by both, are expected to play the most important role. Bone marrow adipocyte (BMA) is one of the cell types comprising the bone, and adipokine is one of the cytokines secreted by both breast cancer cells and BMAs. These BMAs
Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer in the endocrine system. Most thyroid cancers have good prognosis, but some of them are resistant to treatment or show aggressive behavior. Like other tumors, thyroid cancers harbor tumor microenvironment (TME) composed of cancer associated fibroblasts (CAF) and immune cells. Autoimmune lymphocytic thyroiditis can occur in the thyroid, and it may be associated with cancer development. TME is involved in tumor progression through various mechanisms: (1) CA
We aimed to assess protein expressions of p16 and pRB in breast cancer and explore the clinicopathologic implications. Tissue microarray (TMA) was constructed with 406 cases of breast cancer. The cases were subgrouped into luminal A, luminal B, HER-2, and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) based on the results of immunohistochemical stains for ER, PR, HER-2, and Ki-67 and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) for HER-2. One hundred and sixty-eight cases were allocated to the subgroup lumina
To evaluate the roles of 4 putative downstream molecules (ERK, p38 MAPK, JNK and AKT) of the RET signal pathway in the tumorigenesis of papillary carcinomas, the expression patterns of RET and phosphorylated forms of ERK, p38 MAPK, JNK and AKT were evaluated in 115 cases of papillary thyroid carcinomas by 3 mm-core tissue microarray based immunohistochemical staining. The prevalence of RET protein expression was 62.6%. No distinct expression of p-ERK and p-p38 MAPK was demonstrated in tumor cell
Recently, the rearrangement of RET proto-oncogene has been reported to be the most common genetic change in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, its prevalence has been reported variably and its relation to clinical outcome has been controversial. The characteristic nuclear features of PTC usually render the diagnosis, but problem arises with equivocal cytologic features that are present focally. Although there remains some controversy, CK19 has been reported to be a useful ancillary tool

The development and standardization of cytologic screening of the uterine cervix has dramatically decreased the prevalence of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Advances in the understanding of biology of human papillomavirus have contributed to upgrading the histologic diagnosis of the uterine cervix; however, cytologic screening that should triage those that need further management still poses several difficulties in interpretation. Cytologic features of high grade intraepithelial
BACKGROUND: Phyllodes tumor (PT) is a relatively rare breast tumor, accounting for <1% of all breast tumors. MAIN BODY: Adjuvant therapy with chemotherapy or radiation therapy, other than surgical excision, has not been established yet. PT, similar to other breast tumors, is classified as benign, borderline, and malignant according to the World Health Organization classification system, depending on stromal cellularity, stromal atypia, mitotic activity, stromal overgrowth, and tumor border. BACKGROUND: Edition of WHO classification of Female Genital Tumors and is considered as a subtype of endometrioid carcinoma with mucinous differentiation, while "seromucinous borderline tumor" remains and exists as a distinct entity. Both diseases may be considered as no more same lineage. However, ovarian seromucinous borderline tumor (SMBT) is also one of the endometriosis-related neoplasm of ovary similar to endometrioid tumor, featuring that about 50% of ovarian SMBTs combine endometriosis.
