Unraveling the Effects of Residence in an Ethnic Enclave on Immigrants’ Travel Mode Choices
Eun Jin Shin
SJR Q1Journal of Planning Education and Research

This article examines the relationship between immigrants’ residence in an ethnic enclave and use of alternative modes of transportation. Ethnic enclaves may offer stronger social networks, which may affect mode choice. Using the 2012–2013 California Household Travel Survey, I find that immigrants residing in ethnic enclaves have higher rates of household-external carpooling for nonwork trip purposes than immigrants residing outside ethnic enclaves. I find no difference in the rate of transit us

Neighborhood Distribution of Unsheltered Homelessness and its Temporal Changes: Evidence from Los Angeles
Eun Jin Shin
SJR Q1Urban Affairs Review

Using the 2016–2020 point-in-time homeless count data, this study investigates neighborhood characteristics associated with the levels of and changes in unsheltered homeless population density in Los Angeles. The results show that unsheltered homeless people in the study area are heavily concentrated in and around the city center, and in neighborhoods with greater access to shelters and lower socioeconomic status. Notably, neighborhoods closer to the city center experienced a relatively large in

What Can We Learn from Online Reviews? Examining the Reviews of Los Angeles Metro Rail Stations
Eun Jin Shin
SJR Q1Journal of Planning Education and Research

Out-of-vehicle time is a well-known major burden of transit travel. Although transit stations’ characteristics likely affect people’s perceptions of out-of-vehicle time and decisions to use public transit, our understanding of how transit users evaluate stations is limited. This study uses reviews of Los Angeles Metro Rail stations from Yelp.com to conduct descriptive analyses of stations’ numeric ratings and to identify the factors users consider important based on content analyses. It also exp

Spatial segregation of Chinese immigrants in Seoul, South Korea, during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from population data derived from mobile phone signals
Eun Jin Shin
SJR Q2The Social Science Journal

COVID-19 has substantially changed people’s mobility patterns and population dynamics, which could potentially affect the degree of spatial segregation between different population groups in daily life. Using the Seoul De Facto Population data derived from mobile phone signals and users’ registration information, this study explores changes in the spatial segregation of Chinese immigrants in Seoul before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. The results indicate that Chinese immigrants became more sp

A comparative study of bike-sharing systems from a user’s perspective: An analysis of online reviews in three U.S. regions between 2010 and 2018
Eun Jin Shin
SJR Q1International Journal of Sustainable Transportation

Seeking to reduce carbon emissions and increase active travel, U.S. cities have increasingly adopted bike-sharing systems in recent years. However, despite the growing popularity of and markets for bike-sharing systems, little is known of how users perceive and evaluate their quality. By conducting (1) descriptive analysis of numeric ratings and (2) content analysis of the narrative sections of Yelp reviews, this study investigates the perceived quality of bike-sharing systems and factors affect
