15PURPOSE: The role of chemotherapy in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is controversial because ACC is usually stable without chemotherapy and the lack of randomized trials. Here, we conducted the first randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of axitinib as compared with observation in ACC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this multicenter, prospective phase II trial, we enrolled patients with recurrent or metastatic ACC whose cancer had progressed within the past 9 months. Patients were randomly assigne
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and prognostic factors of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) with bone metastases. We also investigated the characteristics and predictive factors of skeletal-related events (SREs) in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients who were first diagnosed with SCLC with bone metastases at our institution were included in this retrospective analysis. RESULTS: The overall survival (OS) of patients with bone metas
BACKGROUND: This study investigated the prognostic effects of venous thromboembolism (VTE)-related factors in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer receiving palliative chemotherapy. Predictive factors for VTE were also investigated. METHODS: A total of 216 patients diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer who received gemcitabine-based palliative chemotherapy at our institution were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: VTE occurred in 51 (23.6%) patients during treatment and did not affe

Patients with postpartum breast cancer have been reported to have a poor prognosis. The present study aimed to evaluate the pregnancy-related risk factors of postpartum breast cancer in Korea. We collected patient data from the Korea National Health Insurance (KNHI) Claims Database of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) for the 2009-2013 period. We evaluated the pregnancy-related risk factors for postpartum breast cancer in two population groups. For Group 1 (women who had
BACKGROUND: Brain metastases frequently occur in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) resulting in a poor prognosis. Here, we investigated the association between PD-L1 expression and brain metastasis in patients with NSCLC and its clinical significance. METHODS: A total of 270 patients diagnosed with metastatic NSCLC who underwent PD-L1 testing on their tumor tissue between January 2017 and March 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The VENTANA PD-L1 (SP263) assay was used, and posit
Careful attention is required when chemotherapeutic agents are administered to patients with metastatic NSCLC with accompanying COPD with a FEV1 value of less than 80% predicted.
Visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome is a clinical manifestation of systemic organ involvement by Toxocara species. VLM with involvement of the bladder and liver is a rare finding. A 62-year-old woman presented with diffuse bladder wall thickening and multiple liver masses with peripheral eosinophilia and urinary symptoms. We considered malignancy or eosinophilic cystitis through clinical manifestations and imaging findings. However, no suspicious malignant lesions were observed on cystoscopy a
BACKGROUND: Despite the development of molecular research and targeted therapy, patients with wild-type epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) still receive platinum doublet chemotherapy as the standard first-line treatment. We investigated the efficacy of first-line regimens in patients with wild-type EGFR nonsquamous NSCLC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of various platinum doublet regimens as first-line treatments. Between 2007 and 2013,
BACKGROUND: The efficacy of second-line chemotherapy (CT2) after the failure of first-line chemotherapy (CT1) for advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC) has not been established. We investigated the favorable prognostic factors for CT2 to determine which patients could be expected to benefit from CT2. METHODS: From a total of 168 patients who were treated with chemotherapy at our institution between January 2003 and December 2012, we retrospectively reviewed 50 patients who received CT2. Patients w
BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNCA) survivors have a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or stroke because of sharing risk factors of disease. Therefore, we investigated the risk of CVD or stroke occurrence among HNCA survivors in Korea based on the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) Service claims database. METHODS: We retrieved claims data of patients who were diagnosed with HNCA in 2014-2015 using ICD-10 code and followed up data until 2018. Patients with newly
AIM: There is no further treatment option for metastatic colon patients who are refractory to standard chemotherapy and to whom novel biological agents are not available. We evaluated the outcomes of mitomycin-C, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin in patients with metastatic colon cancer previously treated with oxaliplatin/5-FU/leucovorin and irinotecan/5-FU/leucovorin. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 46 patients who had received mitomycin-C/5FU/leucovorin between March 2008 and December
BACKGROUND: Poor dental health is correlated with an increased risk of cancer. Using a nationwide population cohort database, we investigated which cancer is highly associated with poor dental health and which dental indicator mostly influences cancer risk. METHODS: This study was conducted using the National Health Checkups (NHC) and National Health Insurance System (NHIS) database in Korea. NHC in Korea includes dental examinations. We retrieved subjects who underwent NHC between 2002 and 2003
