The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in the nonobese population is not low. However, the identification and risk mitigation of MS are not easy in this population. We aimed to develop an MS prediction model using genetic and clinical factors of nonobese Koreans through machine learning methods. A prediction model for MS was designed for a nonobese population using clinical and genetic polymorphism information with five machine learning algorithms, including naïve Bayes classification (NB). Upregulation of the adipokine genes ADIPOR1 and SPP1 is related to poor survival outcomes in colorectal cancer
Eun Kyung Choe, Jin Wook Yi, Young Jun Chai, Kyu Joo Park
SJR Q1Journal of Surgical Oncology

BACKGROUND: Obesity is closely associated with colorectal cancer (CRC), but the underlying mechanism is unclear. We thus evaluated the expression of the adipokine gene family in CRC tissues and its clinicopathological implications. METHODS: Correlations between the mRNA expression levels of the adipokine gene family (ADIPOQ, ADIPOR1/2, LEP, LEPR, RETN, RETNLB, RBP4, SFRP5, NAMPT, and SPP1) in CRC tissue and clinicopathologic factors were analyzed using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas database.

The Association between Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and CT-Measured Skeletal Muscle Mass
Eun Kyung Choe, Hae Yeon Kang, Boram Park, Jong In Yang, Joo Sung Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

A relationship between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sarcopenia has been suggested. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between NAFLD and skeletal muscle mass measured by computed tomography (CT). The clinical records of individuals visiting our center for a routine health check-up who underwent abdominal ultrasonography and abdominal CT scanning were retrospectively reviewed. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to body mass index (BMI)-adjusted skeletal muscle ma

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, might be related to decreased lung function. We aimed to investigate whether obesity indices are associated with forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) in asymptomatic non-smokers through a longitudinal cohort study. The clinical records of 1,145 subjects (428 males, mean age 52.3 years) who underwent a comprehensive health evaluation, including spirometry and abdominal fat computed tomography, at least twice between

Our study shows that visceral obesity is not a risk factor for early CRC. Visceral obesity might influence the normal-adenoma sequence but not the adenoma-early carcinoma sequence.

Exploration of Machine Learning for Hyperuricemia Prediction Models Based on Basic Health Checkup Tests
Sangwoo Lee, Eun Kyung Choe, Boram Park
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Background: Machine learning (ML) is a promising methodology for classification and prediction applications in healthcare. However, this method has not been practically established for clinical data. Hyperuricemia is a biomarker of various chronic diseases. We aimed to predict uric acid status from basic healthcare checkup test results using several ML algorithms and to evaluate the performance. Methods: We designed a prediction model for hyperuricemia using a comprehensive health checkup databa

SJR Q1Digestion

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although there are guidelines for colonoscopic surveillance after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery, the data evaluating the effectiveness of these guidelines are limited. We determined the risk factors for metachronous neoplasia (MN) by performing annual colonoscopy examinations after curative resection. METHODS: We performed annual colonoscopic surveillance on stage I-III CRC patients after curative resection. We stratified the patients based on the advanced neoplasia risk durin

Incidence of Clinically Relevant Incisional Hernia After Colon Cancer Surgery and Its Risk Factors: A Nationwide Claims Study
Gi Hyeon Seo, Eun Kyung Choe, Kyu Joo Park, Young Jun Chai
SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: As there is scant literature focusing on incisional hernia for which hospital care is sought, the aim of this study was to elucidate the incidence and risk factors of overt incisional hernia (OIH) after colon cancer surgery using nationwide claims data. METHODS: Claims data of colon cancer patients who underwent regional colectomy were obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database of South Korea. Data from 2010 to 2012 were collected to ensure adequate fol

Prognostic Impact of Changes in Adipose Tissue Areas after Colectomy in Colorectal Cancer Patients

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

There have been few studies assessing the changes in the body components of patients after colectomy in colorectal cancer (CRC). The purpose of this study was to verify the trends in the adipose tissue areas of CRC patients before and after surgery and to determine their clinical relevance. Computed tomography (CT)-assessed subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) areas were recorded before and after curative resection in stage I to III CRC patients. Changes in the adi

Factors Requiring Adjustment in the Interpretation of Serum Carcinoembryonic Antigen: A Cross-Sectional Study of 18,131 Healthy Nonsmokers
Hae Yeon Kang, Eun Kyung Choe, Kyu Joo Park, Young Lee
SJR Q3Gastroenterology Research and PracticeOA

Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a well-known tumor marker for colorectal adenocarcinoma. However, CEA levels can be influenced by various nonmalignant conditions. A retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed including 18,131 healthy nonsmokers who underwent health check-ups with evaluation of the serum CEA level. In the training set, multivariate analysis revealed that the log-transformed CEA level had positive relationships with age (regression coefficient ( r ) = 0.005, <mml:ma

A relationship between lung function and sarcopenia has been suggested. This study aimed to evaluate the association between lung function and abdominal skeletal muscle mass, as measured by computed tomography (CT). The clinical records of 1907 subjects (1406 males, mean age 53.1 ± 9.2 years), who underwent routine health check-ups, including spirometry and abdominal CT, were retrospectively reviewed. SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract Diverticulosis results from complex interactions related to aging, environmental factors and genetic predisposition. Despite epidemiologic evidence of genetic risk factors, there has been no attempt to identify genes that confer susceptibility to colonic diverticulosis. We performed the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) on susceptibility to diverticulosis in a Korean population. A GWAS was carried out in 7,948 healthy individuals: 893 patients and 1,075 controls comprised the t
