15Mitochondrial components have been abundantly detected in bone matrix, implying that they are somehow transported extracellularly to regulate osteogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that mitochondria and mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs) are secreted from mature osteoblasts to promote differentiation of osteoprogenitors. We show that osteogenic induction stimulates mitochondrial fragmentation, donut formation, and secretion of mitochondria through CD38/cADPR signaling. Enhancing mitochondrial fis
With huge popularity, blogosphere has become a significant channel of information propagation. Accordingly, internet users search for information in the blogosphere and read blog posts before making decision and/or buying brand-new products. Although current blog systems rank 'A-List' bloggers, they are not necessarily influential. To differentiate influential bloggers from popular bloggers, we present important groundwork for identifying influential bloggers by weighting readers based on homoph
Current blog systems rank `A-list' bloggers, but they are not necessarily influential. To differentiate influential bloggers from popular bloggers, we present important groundwork for identifying influential bloggers by weighting readers based on homophily and vulnerability with bloggers. We develop the Quantifying Influence Model (QIM), which attempts to measure the influence score of bloggers. QIM is composed of two components: (1) interpersonal similarity presents the interaction among blogge
In this paper, a qualitative case study of women-dominated Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) project is conducted to explore factors which successfully involve and sustain women FLOSS participants by drawing on Brown and Levinson's politeness theory. The culture and norms of FLOSS appear to be formulated by what is privileged/marginalized by men in the context of FLOSS, and such men's valuing is likely to threaten women FLOSS participants' face. Our findings are 1) in the FLOSS context, th
Human dynamics is known to be inhomogeneous and bursty but the detailed understanding of the role of human factors in bursty dynamics is still lacking. In order to investigate their role we devise an agent-based model, where an agent in an uncertain situation tries to reduce the uncertainty by communicating with information providers while having to wait time for responses. Here the waiting time can be considered as cost. We show that the optimal choice of the waiting time under uncertainty give
Modularity has been seen as key to the success of OSS projects. However empirical studies on modularity of OSS systems have resulted in confusing results. To account for underlying mechanisms of those confusing results, we systematically examine widely studied OSS projects. Based on our systematic review on technical and organizational structures, we suggest that organizational circumstances of OSS production are at least in a continuum of tightly-coupled and loosely-coupled organizational circu
Increasingly complicated software makes it difficult to attract or maintain open source software (OSS) contributors. Faced with such challenges of increasingly complicated software design, large-scale refactoring that radically restructures the architecture of the software can be one of the solutions. In this study, we investigate and illustrate how OSS contributors accomplish large-scale refactoring in OSS development in which there is no significant corporate participation. In our observations
Despite the fact that OSS contributors tend to eschew traditional organizational hierarchies, researchers have found that, in many cases, OSS contributors make tightly coupled system designs and successfully coordinate highly interdependent tasks. Although researchers have explained how OSS contributors make tightly coupled code contributions, we do not know the characteristics of individuals who make such contributions. While previous studies have considered OSS projects as single, independent
Models including network effects are often invoked to justify the high value of social network services like Facebook. Yet as time passes and user numbers grow, inevitably so does reach across social circles, creating "online tension" or, as we term it, mismatch of social display. This leads to reduced participation. Social network services respond with efforts to segment networks through efforts like separate 'friend lists'. We provide a conceptual framework and a visualization to incorporate t
The mirroring hypothesis holds when products and the organizations that create them have structures that mirror each other, coordination will be reduced and projects will be more successful. Yet research suggests that free/libre open source software (FLOSS) projects can be successful even when violating this principle, "breaking the mirror" when loosely-coupled FLOSS contributors develop tightly-coupled systems. This study investigates this idea through a multiple-case studies using an explanato
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of early educator's psychological exhaustion and happiness on adapting ability of children in early education settings. Two hundred ten early educators and six hundred thirty children were selected as subjects of this study and were requested to participate in a survey. The results of this study were as follows: First, as a result of analyzing the relationship between early educator's psychological exhaustion and happiness as well as childr
Abstract Information literacy in higher education has encompassed ideas from constructivism, where students are viewed as active, critical learners. However, educators’ inward-facing view tends to portray students as passive information consumers who lack critical thinking and ethical responsibility. Yet, existing literature has not empirically examined these conflicting views in detail. This study investigates learners’ information literacy from a practice perspective. To do so, this study take
