Home gateway for three-screen TV using H.264 SVC and raptor FEC
Eun‐Seok Ryu, N. Jayant
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics

This paper describes the design and implementation of a multimedia home gateway for threescreen television (3STV) service. The proposed in-home wireless network uses scalable video coding (SVC) and unequal error protection with Raptor forward error correction (FEC) for maximizing the quality of experience (QoE) over the variable-bandwidth, error-prone wireless network. The gateway incorporates (a) dynamic SVC layerswitching, which enables the server to perform selecting appropriate layers from S

3DoF+ 360 Video Location-Based Asymmetric Down-Sampling for View Synthesis to Immersive VR Video Streaming
Jong-Beom Jeong, Dongmin Jang, Jangwoo Son, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q1SensorsOA

Recently, with the increasing demand for virtual reality (VR), experiencing immersive contents with VR has become easier. However, a tremendous amount of calculation and bandwidth is required when processing 360 videos. Moreover, additional information such as the depth of the video is required to enjoy stereoscopic 360 contents. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient method of streaming high-quality 360 videos. To reduce the bandwidth when streaming and synthesizing the 3DoF+ 360 videos, w

Towards Tangible Vision for the Visually Impaired through 2D Multiarray Braille Display
Seondae Kim, Yeongil Ryu, Jinsoo Cho, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q1SensorsOA

This paper presents two methodologies for delivering multimedia content to visually impaired people with the use of a haptic device and braille display. Based on our previous research, the research using Kinect v2 and haptic device with 2D+ (RGB frame with depth) data has the limitations of slower operational speed while reconstructing object details. Thus, this study focuses on the development of 2D multiarray braille display using an electronic book translator application because of its accura

SHVC Tile-Based 360-Degree Video Streaming for Mobile VR: PC Offloading Over mmWave
Dien Van Nguyen, Tuan Thanh Le, Sangsoon Lee, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q1SensorsOA

360-degree video streaming for high-quality virtual reality (VR) is challenging for current wireless systems because of the huge bandwidth it requires. However, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in the 60 GHz band has gained considerable interest from the industry and academia because it promises gigabit wireless connectivity in the huge unlicensed bandwidth (i.e., up to 7 GHz). This massive unlicensed bandwidth offers great potential for addressing the demand for 360-degree video streamin

Client-driven animated GIF generation framework using an acoustic feature
Ghulam Mujtaba, Sangsoon Lee, Jaehyoun Kim, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q1Multimedia Tools and ApplicationsOA

Abstract This paper proposes a novel, lightweight method to generate animated graphical interchange format images (GIFs) using the computational resources of a client device. The method analyzes an acoustic feature from the climax section of an audio file to estimate the timestamp corresponding to the maximum pitch. Further, it processes a small video segment to generate the GIF instead of processing the entire video. This makes the proposed method computationally efficient, unlike baseline appr

Multimedia Vision for the Visually Impaired through 2D Multiarray Braille Display

SJR Q2Applied SciencesOA

Visual impairments cause very limited and low vision, leading to difficulties in processing information such as obstacles, objects, multimedia contents (e.g., video, photographs, and paintings), and reading in outdoor and indoor environments. Therefore, there are assistive devices and aids for visually impaired (VI) people. In general, such devices provide guidance or some supportive information that can be used along with guide dogs, walking canes, and braille devices. However, these devices ha

Overview of Motion-to-Photon Latency Reduction for Mitigating VR Sickness
Yeongil Ryu, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q3KSII Transactions on Internet and Information SystemsOA

For several years, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have been improving. However, some hurdles remain that slow down the distribution of VR and AR devices, such as head-mounted display (HMD), and related consumer content. One issue is VR motion sickness, which has been experienced by users using 360 degree VR content via HMD. This paper discusses the related international standardization work that classifies the factors causing VR sickness, and proposes the process fo

Sub‐bitstream packing based lightweight tiled streaming for 6 degree of freedom immersive video
Jong-Beom Jeong, Soonbin Lee, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q3Electronics LettersOA

Abstract The MPEG immersive video (MIV) has been designed to remove the redundancies of multi‐view videos and merge the residuals into two textures and two geometry videos; therefore, four bitstreams and video decoders are required to provide six degrees of freedom (6DoF) in virtual reality (VR) in MIV. This letter proposes a sub‐bitstream packing method and realisation in tiled streaming for MIV to provide a single bitstream for legacy systems that have a single decoder without an increase in t

Recent advances in 360 video streaming technologies have enhanced the immersive experience of video streaming services. Particularly, there is immense potential for the application of 360 video encoding formats to achieve highly immersive virtual reality (VR) systems. However, 360 video streaming requires considerable bandwidth, and its performance depends on several factors. Consequently, the optimization of 360 video bitstreams according to viewport texture is crucial. Therefore, we propose an

Hyunwook Kim, Tuan Thanh Le, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q2Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies

Abstract This paper describes an adaptive scheme of 360‐degree video streaming over millimeter‐wave (mmWave) communication for cyberphysical system. It consists of two parts, ie, (1) 360‐degree video streaming and offloading over mmWave 802.11ad 60 GHz wireless link and (2) 360‐degree video decoding, postprocessing, and display by using scalable high‐efficiency video coding. The mmWave communication is high‐speed wireless technology to increase the capacity of video transmission. However, curren

Quality Analysis of Massive High-Definition Video Streaming in Two-Tiered Embedded Camera-Sensing Systems
Joongheon Kim, Eun‐Seok Ryu
SJR Q2International Journal of Distributed Sensor NetworksOA

This paper presents the quality analysis results of high-definition video streaming in two-tiered camera sensor network applications. In the camera-sensing system, multiple cameras sense visual scenes in their target fields and transmit the video streams via IEEE 802.15.3c multigigabit wireless links. However, the wireless transmission introduces interferences to the other links. This paper analyzes the capacity degradation due to the interference impacts from the camera-sensing nodes to the mai
