15The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with 120 compressions per minute (CPM) to CPR with 100 CPM in patients with nontraumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. We randomly assigned patients with nontraumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest into two groups upon arrival to the emergency department (ED). The patients received manual CPR either with 100 CPM (CPR-100 group) or 120 CPM (CPR-120 group). The primary outcome measure was sustained res
Purpose: Nursing homes continue to increase in number, and more residents are being transferred to emergency departments (EDs). The objective of this study was to investigate the overall characteristics of residents who were transferred to the ED and follow-up their course of treatments. Methods: We identified nursing home residents aged 65years and older who had been transferred to the ED of a regional tertiary university medical center from January 2008 to December 2009. Further attention was p
Emergency departments (ED) are complex, triage is a main task in the ED to prioritize patient with limited medical resources who need them most. Machine learning (ML) based ED triage tool, Score for Emergency Risk Prediction (SERP), was previously developed using an interpretable ML framework with single center. We aimed to develop SERP with 3 Korean multicenter cohorts based on common data model (CDM) without data sharing and compare performance with inter-hospital validation design. This retro
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the toxicologic profiles and outcome of poisoned patients by comparing the data obtained through telephone counselling, each provided by emergency medical information center (1339) and emergency dispatch center (119). Methods: We analyzed the telephone-based poison exposure data before and after Seoul 1339 merged to 119. We compared the Seoul 1339 call response data in 2008 with Seoul and Busan 119 call response data between 2014 and 2016. We analyze
Objective To evaluate the clinical characteristics, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes of patients with septic shock admitted to the emergency department (ED). Methods This study was a preliminary, descriptive analysis of a prospective, multi-center, observational registry of the EDs of 10 hospitals participating in the Korean Shock Society. Patients aged 19 years or older who had a suspected or confirmed infection and evidence of refractory hypotension or hypoperfusion were included. Resul
Purpose: On November 15, 2012, sales of OTC (Over-The-Counter) drugs began at convenience stores, which changed the accessibility of some drugs. As a result, the exposure and access patterns of these drugs could have changed. In this study, we reviewed the changes in the characteristics of drug poisoning patients because of the reposition of nonprescription drugs according to the revised Pharmaceutical Affairs Act. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate changes in characteristi
Purpose: The Korean government has tried to decrease the suicide death rate over the last decade. Suicide attempts, particularly non-fatal attempts, are the most powerful known risk factor for a completed suicide. An analysis of suicide attempt methods will help establish the effective preventive action of suicide. Fit prevention according to the method of suicide attempt may decrease the incidence of suicide death. Self-poisoning is suggested as a major method of both suicide attempts and suici
Purpose: Cardiovascular or respiratory complications of acute intoxication are the most common causes of mortality. Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) or specific antidotes help manage these cardiac or respiratory complications in acute intoxication. On the other hand, some cases do not respond to ACLS or antidotes and they require some special treatment, such as extracorporeal life support (ECLS). ECLS will provide the chance of recovery from acute intoxication. This study examined the optima
Objective: We evaluated the clinical characteristics and prognoses of patients with septic shock who transferred to the emergency department (ED) in a tertiary referral center. Methods: This study was performed using a prospective, multi-center registry of septic shock, with the participation of 11 tertiary referral centers in the Korean Shock Society between October 2015 and February 2017. We classified the patients as a transferred group who transferred from other hospitals after meeting the i
Purpose: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR)image (DWI) has advantages for the assessment of acute stroke. However, false negative DWI findings in acute ischemic stroke have been reported. Our purpose was to estimate the rate of initial false negative DWI studies in acute ischemic stroke patients and to identify characteristics of false negative DWI stroke patients. Methods: In this retrospective study from January 2010 to June 2011, acute ischemic stroke patients (within 6 hours after st
Objective: This study investigates the characteristics of patients who were re-transferred from other hospitals to regional or local emergency medical centers. Methods: Data from 2016 to 2017 was obtained from the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS). The study population was classified as ‘transferred group’ and ‘direct visit group.’ The transferred group was further subdivided into the ‘re-transfer group’ (patients transferred out to another hospital) and ‘single transfer g
In Korea, the national evaluation program for emergency medical centers (EMCs) was introduced in 2003. EMCs in Korea have three levels of emergency centers including regional emergency centers, local emergency centers, and local emergency rooms. The evaluation system assesses the performance of EMCs at all three levels. The role of both regional emergency centers and local emergency centers administer the final treatment for severe emergency patients, although the definition of severe emergency
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of emergency department length of stay (ED LOS) on the prognosis of patients classified in 28 severe illness diagnosis code groups. Methods: We used data from the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) from 2016 to 2017. Patients with severe illness diagnosis codes as per the discharge diagnosis reports of the emergency department were included and classified into 28 diagnosis code groups. We used multiple logistic
Purpose: Since 2012, acetaminophen can be accessed easily not only at pharmacies but also at convenience stores. The relationship between the easy access of acetaminophen and the risk of poisoning has been controversial. Several studies also reported different results regarding the risk of acetaminophen poisoning after access to acetaminophen was relaxed. This study examined the long-term effects on the risk of acetaminophen poisoning after easy access to acetaminophen was implemented. Methods:
