15The anterolateral thigh(ALT) flap has been known as a very versatile and reliable flap. We report our experiences with the anterolateral thigh flap for the postoncologic reconstruction of head and neck region from April 2002 to March 2005. A total of 38 subjects (M: F=30:8, mean age:53.8 years) were taken. We reviewed primary site of tumors, size and thickness of flaps, location and number of perforators, course of perforators, length of pedicle, and postoperative complications. The mean flap si
Purpose: Basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in the western population and the annual incidence rate is still on an increasing course. In Asian countries such as Korea, the incidence of basal cell carcinoma is reported to be remarkably low but is estimated to be in a steep increase nowadays. This study was to analyze the recent clinical trends of basal cell carcinoma in Korea by reviewing a single institution’s experience. Methods: Throughout an 11-year period, the surgical ex
The superficial temporal fascia is a thin, pliable, well- vascularized flap that is useful in elevation of the reconstructed ear of the microtia. However, the elevation of the superficial temporal fascial flap by conventional T or zigzag incisions in temporal region frequently leaves a conspicuous scar, hair thinning and alopecia. To overcome these problems, we harvested the superficial temporal fascia as a random pattern flap using only a retroauricular skin incision line for the ear elevation.
The authors presented ‘A study on the knowledge about the field of plastic surgery(I)’ decade ago. Since then, the cognition toward a plastic surgery might be altered by the evolution of internet and social atmosphere taking count of outward appearance. Therefore the authors studied again about the cognition to the plastic surgery. The subjects were total 1812 of high school and college students residing in Seoul, Korea from October through December in 2003 and 1812 students are consisted of 839
kground CGCryoDerm was first introduced in 2010 and offers a different matrix preservation processes for freezing without drying preparation. From a theoretical perspective, CGCryoDerm has a more preserved dermal structure and more abundant growth factors for angiogenesis and recellularization. In the current study, the authors performed a retrospective study to evaluate freezing- and freeze-drying-processed acellular dermal matrix (ADM) to determine whether any differences were present in an ea
Lymphedema is a common complication after mastectomy in breast cancer patients. Many treatment options are available, but no treatment results in a complete cure. We report a case of lymphedema that occurred after modified radical mastectomy in a breast cancer patient who showed objective improvement after delayed breast reconstruction with an latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap. A 41-year-old female patient with left breast cancer had undergone modified radical mastectomy with axillary lymph nod
Purpose: Intraosseous hemangiomas are rare and account for fewer than 1% of all bone tumors. The site that is most commonly involved are the vertebral column and the skull. Within the facial skeleton, hemangiomas can occur in the mandible, maxilla, the nasal bones, and rarely the zygoma. Methods: We report a case of an intraosseous hemangioma of the zygoma in a 49-year-old male. The patient had a slow growing hard mass in the left zygoma, which had been present for 8 years. Other than the cosmet
Purpose: Osteoma is one of the common benign tumors of the skull vault and facial skeleton. Although most of the osteomas cause no symptoms, forehead osteomas may lead to facial disfigurement. Osteoma usually happens in solitary lesion and multiple osteomas which don’t combine with syndrome are very rare. We report an experience of treatment of non-syndromic multiple osteomas in the skull. Methods: A 54-year-old female patient visited due to the multiple palpable hard masses on her forehead in 2
Purpose: NTM (non tuberculous mycobacteria) is rare cause of surgical site infection after plastic surgery in immunocompetent patients. There are some reports about NTM infection after body contouring procedure from Latin America. But, there is no report in Korea. The purpose of this article is to report 2 patients with soft tissue infection caused by NTM after body contouring procedure. Methods: Two young female patients exhibited signs of inflammation and abscess after body contouring procedur
Purpose: Reconstruction of full - thickness defects of the nasal ala has always been a challenge. Local flaps can be used easily, and good result can be achieved when it is indicated. But local flaps often result in facial scars and bulky ala that require secondary revisions. Composite auricular chondrocutaneous graft may matches nasal alae well in terms of contour, color and texture, however, the size of composite graft is limited. We performed free vascularized helical root flaps for reconstru
Purpose: The incidence of skin cancer is increasing throughout the world including Asian countries such as Korea. Still there are only limited reports of the clinical features of skin cancer in Korea, especially in the fields of plastic surgery. This study is to demonstrate the recent clinical trends of skin cancer and the treatment of skin cancer in Korea by analyzing a single institution’s experience. Methods: During a 11-year period, 370 patients visited our department for the excision of skin
Breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomy often experience stress, depression from body changes and loss of femininity. Choice of surgical method is important, because Korean women tend to be sensitive to the shape of the reconstructed breast, donor site scars and the changes in body contour. The latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap was one of the first methods of breast reconstruction. However, due to lack of volume, the latissimus dorsi flap has become a secondary choice for breast rec
Arteriovenous malformation(AVM) is an abnormal communication between an artery and a vein and often causes significant hemorrhage or cosmetic problems. Treatment of these vascular anomalies is hazardous and has high incidence of recurrence. A multidisciplinary team approach is required in the assessment and treatment of the lesion, and preoperative angiography with superselective embolization followed by resection is required. The authors performed nine cases of the wide resection of the congeni
Tattooing has been practised since pre-Christian times, as an object of both fascination and revulsion. In the Present day, body tattoo has been a flourishing and contemporary teen issue. Adolescents have discovered tattoos as a means of self-expression. Due to the external characteristics of the tattoo however, a lot of researchers have shown their interest and done various researches. The examination of the psychological characteristics of the tattooed people revealed that a lot of people have
