15Oxidative stress is induced by an imbalanced redox states, involving either excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or dysfunction of the antioxidant system. The brain is one of organs especially vulnerable to the effects of ROS because of its high oxygen demand and its abundance of peroxidation-susceptible lipid cells. Previous studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress plays a central role in a common pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease

Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with cognitive impairments. However, the effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the topography of cortical thinning have not yet been studied in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the topography of cortical thinning related to cardiovascular risk factors and the relationships among cardiovascular risk factors, white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and cortical atrophy. Participants included 226 patien
This study provides Class II evidence that the combination of younger age, greater number of lacunes, and lesser MTA identifies patients with SVaD at lower risk of Alzheimer disease pathology.
Previous studies have introduced the concept of "SuperAgers," defined as older adults with youthful memory performance associated with the increased cortical thickness of the anterior cingulate cortex. Given that age-related structural brain changes are observed earlier in the white matter (WM) than in the cortical areas, we investigated whether WM integrity is different between the SuperAgers (SA) and typical agers (TA) and whether it is associated with superior memory performance as well as a
The T1W-axial VRS showed good agreement with T1W-coronal VRS and correlated well with cognitive functions as well as hippocampal volumes, which suggests that the T1-axial VRS may replace the original T1W-coronal one.
Cognitive dysfunction has long been recognized as a frequently observed symptom in individuals with repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) such as professional boxers. The exact neurobiological mechanisms underlying this cognitive deficit have not yet been identified, but it is agreed upon that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is one of the most commonly affected brain regions in professional boxers. Noting the pivotal role of the two major brain metabolites in human cognitive functions, γ-am
Polygonatum sibiricum (PS) rhizome, which contains glyceryl-1-monolinoleate as its primary active component, has been shown to improve insomnia in animal models. Based on these findings, we aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of PS rhizome extract in improving sleep quality in individuals with mild insomnia. Eighty individuals with mild insomnia were enrolled in a four-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of PS rhizome extract (500 mg/day, n = 40, PS group) or placeb
Superagers are defined as older adults who have youthful memory performance comparable to that of middle-aged adults. Classifying superagers based on the brain connectome using machine learning modeling can provide important insights on the physiology underlying successful aging. We aimed to investigate the unique patterns of functional brain connectome of superagers and develop predictive models to differentiate superagers from typical agers based on machine learning methods. We obtained restin
Objectives This study aimed to assess the impact of cognitive training (CT) chatbots on older adults’ memory function and mental health. Specifically, it focused on the effects of engagement and adherence. Methods: A CT chatbot developed for this study incorporates motivational interviewing strategies and personalisation features to enhance engagement and adherence. Thirty-two participants (M = 73.3 years, SD = 5.85) used it for 90 days. Measures included Delayed Matching to Sample (DMS) and Pair
The amnestic form of mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is likely a precursor of Alzheimer disease (AD). Both verbal and visual memory tests are used in the diagnosis of aMCI; however, it is unknown which type of test is superior at predicting the underlying pathologic changes associated with AD. In this study, we compared the topography of cortical thinning among 3 subtypes of patients with aMCI: 33 patients with predominant verbal memory impairment (verbal-aMCI), 35 with predominant visual memor
