15Perfusion is a fundamental biological function that refers to the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissue by means of blood flow. Perfusion MRI is sensitive to microvasculature and has been applied in a wide variety of clinical applications, including the classification of tumors, identification of stroke regions, and characterization of other diseases. Perfusion MRI techniques are classified with or without using an exogenous contrast agent. Bolus methods, with injections of a contrast agent
The objective of this study was to evaluate susceptibility changes caused by iron accumulation in cognitive normal (CN) elderly, those with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and those with early state AD, and to compare the findings with gray matter volume (GMV) changes caused by neuronal loss. The participants included 19 elderly CN, 19 aMCI, and 19 AD subjects. The voxel-based quantitative susceptibility map (QSM) and GMV in the brain were calculated and the differences of those insid
The Committee of Human Research of the University of California San Francisco approved this study, and all volunteers provided written informed consent. The goal of this study was to prospectively determine the global and regional reliability and reproducibility of noninvasive brain perfusion measurements obtained with different pulsed arterial spin-labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging methods and to determine the extent to which within-subject variability and random noise limit reliab
This was the first study to evaluate the textures of QSM in AD, which overcame the limitations of voxel-based analyses. The QSM texture analysis successfully distinguished both AD and MCI from CN and outperformed the voxel-based analysis using 3DT1-weighed images in separating MCI from CN. The first-order textures were more efficient in differentiating MCI from CN than did the second-order.
A novel pulsed arterial spin labeling (PASL) technique for multislice perfusion-weighted imaging is proposed that compensates for magnetization transfer (MT) effects without sacrificing tag efficiency, and balances transient magnetic field effects (eddy currents) induced by pulsed field gradients. Improved compensation for MT is demonstrated using a phantom. Improvement in perfusion measurement was compared to other PASL techniques by acquiring perfusion images from 13 healthy volunteers (nine w
Glx was altered during a stimulation that may be used to evaluate neuronal dysfunction in a demented patient. tNAA and tCr were reduced in patients with AD.
Measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF) with arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI are challenging primarily due to a poor signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. Therefore, methods that improve SNR and minimize measurement errors can play a significant role for better estimations of CBF. The purpose of this work was to develop an ASL method for measurements of CBF at high magnetic field strength. In the proposed multislice ASL method, using in-plane double inversion for labeling, stationary spins are kept at
Background gradients affect the DT-MRI measurements in AD patients. Geometric average diffusion measures can be useful to minimize the intrinsic local magnetic susceptibility variations in brain tissue.
Diffusion weighted imaging based on random Brownian motion of water molecules within a voxel provides information on the micro-structure of biological tissues through water molecule diffusivity. As the electrical conductivity is primarily determined by the concentration and mobility of ionic charge carriers, the macroscopic electrical conductivity of biological tissues is also related to the diffusion of electrical ions. This paper aims to investigate the low-frequency electrical conductivity by
Background The previous studies reported increased concentrations of metallic ions, imbalanced Na+ and K+ ions, and the increased mobility of protons by microstructural disruptions in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Purpose (1) to apply a high-frequency conductivity (HFC) mapping technique using a clinical 3T MRI system, (2) compare HFC values in the brains of participants with AD, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and cognitively normal (CN) elderly people, (3) evaluate the relationship betwe
Standard veterinary neurological examination was performed on dogs with MPTP-induced PD. A homogeneous grade similar to human PD patients was evident in all dogs. The fMRI study showed that insertion of the acupuncture needle at acupoint ST 36 significantly affected the proprioceptive brain activation by decreasing blood oxygenation level-dependent signal intensity in basal ganglia, limbic system, and cerebellum. Compared with normal and PD brain, we suggest that acupuncture at ST 36 has differe
Imaging contrast obtained noninvasively with the DIR sequence was similar to that of the post-enhanced T1-weighted sequence. The DIR sequence may be useful for delineating synovium without using contrast materials.
We developed a fast method to obtain T1 relaxation maps in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on two inversion recovery acquisitions and a reference acquisition, while maintaining high sensitivity by utilizing the full dynamic range of the MRI signal. Optimal inversion times for estimating T1 in the human brain were predicted using standard error propagation theory. In vivo measurements on nine healthy volunteers yielded T1 values of 1094+/-18 ms in gray matter and 746+/-40 ms in white matte
