15The incidence of KD in South Korea increased to 194.7 per 100,000 children younger than 5 years in 2014; meanwhile, the coronary aneurysm rate decreased to 1.7%.
The average annual incidence of KD in South Korea has continuously increased to 134.4 per 100,000 children <5 years of age in 2011, which is the second highest incidence of KD worldwide, following its incidence in Japan.
Epidemiologic studies of Kawasaki disease (KD) have shown a new pattern or change of its occurrence suggestive of its pathophysiology or risk factors from the first patient with KD reported in 1961. The incidence of KD in Northeast Asian countries including Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan is 10-30 times higher than that in the United States and Europe. Knowing the true epidemiology of KD in each country and the availability of publications of KD epidemiology also could benefit general heal
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate recent epidemiologic features of Kawasaki disease (KD) in South Korea. METHODS: The ninth triennial nationwide questionnaire survey collected data on the demographic findings, symptoms and signs, treatment patterns and coronary artery complications of acute-phase KD occurred in 2015-2017 from 98 hospitals with pediatric residency programs and 108 community hospitals without residency programs. RESULTS: We received data from 93 of the 98 hospitals (resp
Background— Self-expandable percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) for native right ventricular outflow tract lesions is still in the clinical trial phase. The aim of this study is to present the result of feasibility study of a novel self-expandable knitted nitinol wire stent mounted with a treated trileaflet α-Gal–free porcine pericardial valve for PPVI. Methods and Results— A feasibility study using Pulsta valve (TaeWoong Medical Co, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea) was designed for patien
An increase in the number of preterm infants and a decrease in the gestational age at birth have resulted in an increase in the number of patients with significant bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and secondary pulmonary hypertension (PH). PH contributes significantly to the high morbidity and mortality in the BPD patients. Therefore, regular monitoring for PH by using echocardiography and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) or N-terminal-proBNP must be conducted in the BPD patients with greater th
Abstract Objectives The aim of this study is to present the mid‐term outcomes of Pulsta valve. Background The Pulsta valve is a Self‐expandable knitted nitinol‐wire stent mounted with a treated tri‐leaflet α‐Gal‐free porcine pericardial valve for percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) in patients with native right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) lesions. Methods A multi‐center clinical trial using Pulsta valve® was designed for patients with severe pulmonary regurgitation (PR) in the
The temporal association between monthly occurrence of KD and viral detection suggests the etiologic importance of precedent infection in the development of KD.
Balloon-expandable percutaneous pulmonary valve systems using the Melody and Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter heart valves have been increasingly used instead of surgically implantable pulmonary valves. However, limited patients with right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) lesions are suitable candidates for percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) using these systems after surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot. Therefore, larger self-expandable valved-stents are being developed for nati
Phechromocytoma/paraganglioma could occur in Fontan patients more than expected. Because it is curable by tumor resection during its early phase, early diagnosis and treatment of pheochromocytoma are crucial in Fontan patients not to make hemodynamic deterioration and aggravation of heart failure.
The univentricular heart after the Fontan operation may have a blind pouch formed by the pulmonary stump or rudimentary ventricle according to the anatomy before surgery. Thrombosis in an intracardiac blind pouch of patients with a univentricular heart is a hazardous complication. Because only a few reports have described this complication, the authors evaluated the clinical significance of thrombosis in an intracardiac blind pouch of a univentricular heart. They performed a retrospective review
