15Timely worldwide distribution of biosequence and bioinformatics data depends on high performance networking and advances in Internet transport methods. The Bio-Mirror project focuses on providing up-to-date distribution of this rapidly growing and changing data. It offers FTP, Web and Rsync access to many high-volume databanks from several sites around the world. Experiments with data grids and other methods offer future improvements in biology data distribution.

Broadcasting protocols offer an efficient and scalable method to provide video-on-demand. We present a new broadcasting protocol that assumes that some portions of the video are already preloaded in the set-top-box (STB), and at the same time, requires the user to wait for a fixed-delay before viewing. As a result, there is a trade-off between the size of the consumed local storage, user waiting time, and bandwidth consumption. This trade-off makes this protocol very flexible, in that we can con
We present a scalable and topologically-aware application-layer multicast approach, specially designed for large-scale distributed applications. The proposed approach constructs topologically-aware data paths which are based on topological clustering of multicast group members. The approach does not require any exact network topology information, but instead requires the relative location information of members using landmarks. We partition the members into topologically-aware clusters based on
This paper briefly describes Internet development in the Republic of Korea (South Korea), which started research and development on computer networking in the late 1970s. Korea became one of the first countries to deploy the Internet in 1982 [1], and organized one of the first global Internet conferences in 1985 [2]. In the late 1990s, Korea put much effort into development of broadband networks, starting from a master plan in 1995. Korea became a world leader with widely available wired and wir
Modern powerful computers connected by high-speed networks offer the opportunity to build interactive programs supporting collaboration. As result, the scale of such collaboration will increase dramatically like hundreds and thousands. Existing systems for multiparty sessions does not consider such a large number of participants. Centralized system will have the central management object overloaded with membership control functions and floor control functions. Distributed system will have the pa
Since large objects consume substantial resources, web proxy caching incurs a fundamental trade-off between performance (i.e., hit-ratio and latency) and overhead (i.e., resource usage), in terms of caching and relaying large objects to users. This paper investigates how and to what extent the current dedicated-server based web proxy caching scheme is affected by large file transfers in a high bandwidth campus network environment. We use a series of trace-based performance analyses and profiling
Domain name system (DNS) is a primary identification mechanism for Internet applications. However, DNS resolutions often take an unbearably long time, and this could seriously impair the consistency of the service quality of Internet applications based on DNS such as World Wide Web. Several approaches reduce DNS resolution time by proactively refreshing expired cached records or prefetching available records beforehand, but these approaches have an inherent problem in that they cause additional

We propose an Adjustable Parallel TCP (AP-TCP) which is a new scheme to control the aggregate throughput of parallel TCP flows. The AP-TCP can adjust the aggregate throughput to be any desired level irrespective of the parallel size (the number of parallel TCP flows). To adjust the aggregate throughput, we modify the increment factor of each parallel TCP flow to K2/N2 where N is the number of parallel TCP flows and K is a value equivalent to any desired level for the aggregate throughput. Once K
In this paper, we introduce the compressed HDTV over IPv6 system, applications, and its experiment in IPv6 network between Korea and China. We developed the compressed HDTV over IPv6 system which requires 20-25Mbps with MPEG2. The system use 720/30p or 1080i HDTV format and support IPv4/IPv6 and unicast/multicast. The compressed HDTV system provides high quality audio and video with relatively small bandwidth comparing with uncompressed HDTV system, but it suffers about 1 second delay for MPEG2
