15Data storage devices are getting "smarter." Smart Flash storage devices (a.k.a. "Smart SSD") are on the horizon and will package CPU processing and DRAM storage inside a Smart SSD, and make that available to run user programs inside a Smart SSD. The focus of this paper is on exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with exploiting this functionality of Smart SSDs for relational analytic query processing. We have implemented an initial prototype of Microsoft SQL Server running on a S

Symbiotic associations between legumes and rhizobia usually commence with the perception of bacterial lipochitooligosaccharides, known as Nod factors (NF), which triggers rapid cellular and molecular responses in host plants. We report here deep untargeted tandem mass spectrometry-based measurements of rapid NF-induced changes in the phosphorylation status of 13,506 phosphosites in 7739 proteins from the model legume Medicago truncatula. To place these phosphorylation changes within a biological
Friction stir welding (FSW) has been successfully used for joining low melting temperature materials. However, applications in high strength alloys, such as titanium and stainless steel, remain limited due to large welding force and consequent tool wear. Ultrasonic-assisted processes have been coupled with tooling in various manufacturing processes in order to enhance the performance of conventional machining and bonding processes. We suggest ultrasonic assisted friction stir welding (UaFSW), as
For decades, RDBMSs have supported declarative SQL as well as imperative functions and procedures as ways for users to express data processing tasks. While the evaluation of declarative SQL has received a lot of attention resulting in highly sophisticated techniques, the evaluation of imperative programs has remained naïve and highly inefficient. Imperative programs offer several benefits over SQL and hence are often preferred and widely used. But unfortunately, their abysmal performance discour
The advance of digital video technology in the past two decades facilitates empirical investigation of learning in real time. The focus of this paper is the combined use of realtime digital video and a networked linguistic corpus for exploring the ways in which these technologies enhance our capability to investigate the cognitive process of learning.A perennial challenge to research using digital video (e.g., screen recordings) has been the method for interfacing the captured behavior with the l
Prediction queries are widely used across industries to perform advanced analytics and draw insights from data. They include a data processing part (e.g., for joining, filtering, cleaning, featurizing the datasets) and a machine learning (ML) part invoking one or more trained models to perform predictions. These parts have so far been optimized in isolation, leaving significant opportunities for optimization unexplored. We present Raven, a production-ready system for optimizing prediction querie
The huge demand for computation in artificial intelligence (AI) is driving unparalleled investments in hardware and software systems for AI. This leads to an explosion in the number of specialized hardware devices, which are now offered by major cloud vendors. By hiding the low-level complexity through a tensor-based interface, tensor computation runtimes (TCRs) such as PyTorch allow data scientists to efficiently exploit the exciting capabilities offered by the new hardware. In this paper, we e
This paper presents ultrasonic assisted friction stir welding (UaFSW), which is suggested to improve the weld quality and efficiency as a hybrid welding system. Ultrasonic-assisted processes have been coupled with tooling in various manufacturing processes to enhance the performance of conventional machining and bonding processes. For successful and effective implementation of the UaFSW, we must first consider how to integrate ultrasonics into the friction stir welding equipment. To solve this p
Ultrasonic assisted friction stir welding (UaFSW) is an hybrid welding technique, where high frequency vibration is superimposed on the movement of a rotating tool. The benefit of using ultrasonic vibration in the FSW process refers to the reduction in the welding force and to the better welding quality. The UaFSW system is being developed and its mechanism needs to be understood using both the experiments and the numerical simulations. In this paper, FE simulations of FSW and UaFSW using ABAQUS
Ricinoleic acid (C18:1-OH, RA) is a valuable hydroxy fatty acid with versatile applications. The current industrial source of RA relies on the hydrolysis of castor bean oil. However, the coexistence of the toxic compound ricin and the unstable supply of this plant have led to an exploration of promising alternatives: generating RA in heterologous plants or microorganisms. In this study, we engineered the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to produce RA in the form of free fatty acids (FFA). Fi
Data storage devices are getting smarter. Smart flash storage devices (a.k.a. Smart SSDs) are on the horizon and package a small programmable computer inside the device. Thus, users can run code closer to the data right inside the SSD, on the “other” side of the I/O bus. The focus of this paper is on exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with exploiting this functionality of Smart SSDs for relational analytic query processing. We have implemented an initial prototype of Microsoft
In many settings, a database server has to be restarted either in response to a failure event, or in response to an operational decision such as moving a database service from one machine to another. However, such restarts pose a potential performance problem as the new database server starts off with a cold buffer pool. As a result, the database application experiences a dramatic reduction in performance right after the restart, since just before the restart the database buffer pool was filled
In order to improve new radio (NR) performance, wide bandwidth allocation between 52.6 GHz to 71 GHz bands has been considered in the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). Since spectrum bands beyond 52.6 GHz have not been used for commercial communication systems, it can be continuously allocated up to several GHz bandwidth. To utilize such potential benefit, the NR has to be optimized for beyond 52.6 GHz bands operation. Furthermore, coexistence issues have to be handled between NR and ot
