Cognition in Context: The Role of Objective and Subjective Measures of Neighborhood and Household in Cognitive Functioning in Later Life
Haena Lee, Linda J. Waite
SJR Q1The GerontologistOA

Late life living environments are important contexts for aging. Aging-in-Place interventions should address subjective interpretations of place to reduce future risks of cognitive decline.

Are Positive Childhood Experiences Linked to Better Cognitive Functioning in Later Life?: Examining the Role of Life Course Pathways
Haena Lee, Markus H. Schafer
SJR Q1Journal of Aging and HealthOA

Objectives: We examine whether childhood family well-being is associated with cognitive functioning and to what extent the association between the family context and cognitive functioning is explained by adulthood resources. Methods: Data are drawn from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project Wave 3 (2015/2016; N = 3361). We measured cognitive functioning using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Childhood family factors included family-life happiness, family structure, and family soc

Childhood lead exposure is associated with lower cognitive functioning at older ages
Haena Lee, Mark Lee, John Robert Warren, Joseph P. Ferrie
SJR Q1Science AdvancesOA

The Flint, Michigan water crisis renewed concern about lead toxicity in drinking water. While lead in drinking water has been shown to negatively affect cognition among children, much less is known about its long-term consequences for late-life cognition. Using a nationally representative sample of U.S. older adults linked to historical administrative data from 1940, we find that older adults who lived as children in cities with lead pipes and acidic or alkaline water-the conditions required for

Multigenerational Households During Childhood and Trajectories of Cognitive Functioning Among U.S. Older Adults
Haena Lee, Lindsay H. Ryan, Mary Beth Ofstedal, Jacqui Smith
SJR Q1The Journals of Gerontology Series BOA

OBJECTIVES: Family structure in childhood influences early brain development and cognitive performance in adulthood. Much less is known about its long-term impact on later-life cognitive functioning. We extend the two-generation family structure approach to investigate the potential contribution of living with grandparents in multigenerational households to differences in cognitive functioning at older ages. METHODS: Data were drawn from 9 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2014) mer

Living Alone, Environmental Hazards, and Falls Among U.S. Older Adults
Haena Lee, Janis Lim
SJR Q1Innovation in AgingOA

Abstract Background and Objectives Physical conditions of living environments can affect the incidence of falls; however, prior work has focused typically on 1 domain at a time—either neighborhood or home, capturing limited environmental boundaries of older adults. We examined how neighborhood together with the home environment affect the incidence of falls over time and whether living arrangement modifies the influence of the environmental risks on falls. A life course approach to total tooth loss: Testing the sensitive period, accumulation, and social mobility models in the Health and Retirement Study
Haena Lee
SJR Q1Community Dentistry And Oral EpidemiologyOA

OBJECTIVES: Childhood socio-economic status (SES) has long been associated with later-life oral health, suggesting that childhood is a sensitive period for oral health. Far less attention has been given to the long-term impact of childhood trauma, abuse, and smoking on later-life oral health. This study fills the gap in the literature by examining how adverse childhood experiences-social, psychological, and behavioral-shape total tooth loss over the life course, with an assessment of the sensiti

Productive Activities and Risk of Cognitive Impairment and Depression: Does the Association Vary by Gender?
Haena Lee, Shannon Ang
SJR Q1Sociological PerspectivesOA

We examine how labor together with social participation protects against cognitive impairment and depression, with a focus on gender differences. Data are drawn from four waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006-2012). Both paid work and unpaid work are considered labor participation. Social participation includes the frequency of participation in formal social institutions, religious groups, grandparenting, and interactions with family and friends. Using growth curve models, we fin

Disorder, networks, and cognition: do social networks buffer the influence of neighborhood and household disorder on cognitive functioning?
Haena Lee
SJR Q1Aging & Mental HealthOA

This study suggests a larger network may play a role in minimizing the negative influence of household disorder on cognitive function for middle-aged and older adults. Social policy and intervention aimed at promoting network ties may help reduce further disparities in cognitive function, especially for those vulnerable groups living in a poor-quality household.

Childhood Background Measures and Their Associations With Later-Life Physical, Mental, and Social Health in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project
Haena Lee, Kyung Won Choi, Linda J. Waite
SJR Q1The Journals of Gerontology Series BOA

OBJECTIVE: We describe each childhood background measure available in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), report preliminary population estimates for each measure by age and gender, and validate the childhood measures by showing that the associations between the NSHAP childhood measures and later-life health outcomes are consistent with previous studies on this topic. METHOD: Childhood background measures included family life happiness, family structure, parental educati

Neighborhood and Housing Conditions and Risk of Falls

SJR Q1Innovation in AgingOA

Abstract Physical conditions of living environments can impact risk of falls, however, prior work has focused typically on one domain at a time—either neighborhood or home, capturing limited environmental boundaries of older adults. We extend prior work by considering both neighborhood and home as important residential contexts and examine their impact on the onset of falls over time. Data are drawn from two waves of the Health and Retirement Study (2012 and 2016; N = 2,244). We used interviewer

Guided Autotransplantation of Impacted Canines Using a CAD/CAM Surgical Template

SJR Q2ChildrenOA

Autotransplantation is a potential treatment alternative when orthodontic traction of an impacted tooth is difficult. In this article, we describe two cases of guided autotransplantation of an impacted canine using a computer-aided designed and manufactured surgical template. The impacted canine was segmented on preoperative cone-beam computed tomography images to ensure a sufficient periodontal ligament space and placement of the donor tooth with the least pressure on it. The canine was virtual

Crime, Perceived Danger, and Adiposity: The Role of Gender
Haena Lee, Kathleen A. Cagney, Louise C. Hawkley
SJR Q1Journal of Aging and HealthOA

Objectives: We examine whether police-reported crime is associated with adiposity and examine to what extent the association between crime and adiposity is explained by perceived neighborhood danger with a particular focus on gender differences. Method: Data are drawn from the wave of 2010-2011 National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project merged with information on neighborhood social environment and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) crime report. We use burglary as a main predictor. Wais

Real-Time Mobile Emotional Content Player Using Smartphone Camera-Based PPG Measurement
Haena Lee, Dong Keun Kim
Mobile Information SystemsOA

A real-time mobile content player was developed that can recognize and reflect emotions in real time using a smartphone. To determine effective awareness, a photoplethysmogram (PPG), which is a biological signal, was measured to recognize emotional changes in users presented with content intended to induce an emotional response. To avoid the need for a separate sensor to measure the PPG, PPG signals were extracted from the red ( R ) values of images acquired by the rear camera of a smartphone. T
