15UNLABELLED: There is a recently proposed subtype of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that is histologically similar to usual HCC, but characterized by the expression of "stemness"-related markers. A large-scale study on two different cohorts of HCCs was performed to investigate the clinicopathologic features and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related protein expression status of this subtype of HCCs. The expression status of stemness-related (e.g., keratin 19 [K19], cluster of differentia
PURPOSE: To determine how often loss of ataxia-telangiectasia-mutated (ATM) protein expression occurs in primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas and to determine its prognostic significance. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: The expression of ATM and TP53 was determined by immunohistochemistry in 397 surgically resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (Hopkins; Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD), a second set of 159 cases (Emory; Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA), and 21 cancers aft
UNLABELLED: Large liver cell change (LLCC) refers to microscopic lesions often found in various chronic liver diseases; however, its nature is still controversial. Thirty-four formalin-fixed and 19 fresh frozen hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis samples were examined for the presence of LLCC, small liver cell change (SLCC), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The cell cycle checkpoint status (p21, p27, p16, Tp53), cell dynamics (proliferating cell nuclear antigen, Ki-67, terminal deoxynuc
Cancer-associated fibroblasts are abundant in the desmoplastic stroma of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas and are considered to play important roles in tumor progression. In this study, we investigated the expression status of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine, periostin, fibroblast-activated protein, and the newly developed proCOL11A1 antibody in the stroma of surgically resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas and their prognostic implications. Tissue microarrays were constructed
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is heterogeneous in pathogenesis, phenotype and biological behavior. Various histopathological features of HCC had been sporadically described, and with the identification of common molecular alterations of HCC and its genomic landscape over the last decade, morpho-molecular correlation of HCC has become possible. As a result, up to 35% of HCCs can now be classified into histopathological variants, many of which have unique molecular characteristics. This review wi
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is heterogeneous in histopathology, pathogenesis and biological behavior. There is accumulating evidence that the expression of 'stemness'-related markers such as K19, EpCAM and CD133 in HCC is associated with an aggressive biological behavior and poor clinical outcome compared to conventional HCCs that do not express stemness-related markers. Compared to conventional HCCs, these tumors more frequently demonstrate infiltrative growth patterns, vascular invasion and
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a spectrum of diseases characterized by fatty accumulation in hepatocytes, ranging from steatosis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, to cirrhosis. While histopathological evaluation of liver biopsies plays a central role in the diagnosis of NAFLD, limitations such as the problem of interobserver variability still exist and active research is underway to improve the diagnostic utility of liver biopsies. In this article, we provide a comprehensive overview
The prognosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains dismal even after complete resection, with most recurrences occurring within 1-2 years postoperatively. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette (ABC) transporters have been demonstrated to play major roles in multidrug resistance (MDR) of cancers. In this study, we evaluated the expression statuses and the clinical significance of MDR1 (ABCB1), MDR-associated proteins (MRPs/ABCC) 1, 2 and 3, and breast cancer resistance prote
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the associated factors and prognosis according to pathology and margin after surgical resection of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN). BACKGROUND: There is limited information on recurrence patterns according to pathology and margin in IPMN. METHODS: Total 577 patients who underwent operation for IPMN at a tertiary center were included. Factors associated with recurrence, survival, and recurrence outcomes according to pathology and margin were analyze
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The microvascular invasion (MVI) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) involves a wide histological spectrum, and it is unclear whether the degree of MVI correlates with patient prognosis or imaging findings. Here, we evaluate the prognostic value of MVI classification and analyze the radiologic features predictive of MVI. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort of 506 patients with resected solitary HCCs, the histological and imaging features of MVI were reviewed and correlated with
The diagnostic usefulness of LBC was comparable with that of CS. The cytomorphologic features did not differ significantly between the 2 methods, and the reduced bloody backgrounds allowed better visibility in the LBC method. (Clinical trial registration number: NCT03606148.).
