15BACKGROUND: An elevated coronary artery calcification score (CACS) is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk in patients with CKD. However, the relationship between CACS and CKD progression has not been elucidated. METHODS: We studied 1936 participants with CKD (stages G1-G5 without kidney replacement therapy) enrolled in the KoreaN Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients With CKD. The main predictor was Agatston CACS categories at baseline (0 AU, 1-100 AU, and >100 AU). The primary
Non-curative resection (NCR) of early gastric cancer (EGC) after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) can increase the burden of additional treatment and medical expenses. We aimed to develop a machine-learning (ML)-based NCR prediction model for EGC prior to ESD. We obtained data from 4927 patients with EGC who underwent ESD between January 2006 and February 2020. Ten clinicopathological characteristics were selected using extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and were used to develop a ML-base
Objective: Obesity is an established risk factor for kidney damage. In this study, we explored the long-term association of changes in body mass index (BMI) over time with incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: For this analysis, 5,393 middle-aged adults without comorbidities in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) were included. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to determine the patterns of BMI change (decreasing, stable, and increasing BMI) between baseline and year
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between periodontal disease and the development of inflammatory arthritides in the general population. METHODS: In total, 489 125 participants from the UK Biobank without a previous history of RA, AS and PsA were enrolled. The primary outcome was the incidence of inflammatory arthritides, which was a composite of RA, AS and PsA according to the presence of periodontal disease based on self-reported oral health indicators. Multivariate Cox proportional h
Background The association between body mass index (BMI), metabolic conditions, and incident Parkinson's disease (PD) is quite complex. Objective To investigate the relationship between these variables, particularly the impact of metabolically healthy overweight/obese on the risk of PD, in the general population. Methods A total of 402,059 participants from the UK Biobank were categorized into four phenotypes according to the presence of overweight/obesity and/or metabolically abnormal status: o
INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The transferrin receptor (CD71) is known as a receptor for IgA1 on mesangial cells and plays a key role in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy. However, little is known about the association between clinical outcomes and the level of CD71 expression. METHODS: We studied the clinical implication of mesangial CD71 in 282 patients with biopsy-proven IgAN between 2005 and 2014. Glomeruli were obtained from biopsy tissues by manual microdissection. The expression of glomerular
MGN is the second most common cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults, with FSGS recently becoming the most common, however there is no cure for idiopathic MGN and treatment focus on conservative methods such as salt restriction, blood thinning agents, ARB etc. Sometimes corticosteroids, cyclophosphamide, chlorambucil, cyclosporine-A, tacrolimus, MMF, Rituximab etc are tried with mixed results.
BACKGROUND: Kidney function declines faster in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than in those without, and coronary artery calcification is a risk factor for adverse kidney outcomes. Thus, we examined whether T2DM modified the relationship between coronary artery calcification and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. METHODS: Among 2067 participants from the KoreaN Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients With CKD, the main exposures analyzed were T2DM and coronary artery calcifica
BACKGROUND: The association between delayed post-polypectomy bleeding and chronic kidney disease remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether patients with chronic kidney disease are at an increased risk of delayed post-polypectomy bleeding. METHODS: This cohort study included patients who underwent colonoscopy and polypectomy in Korea between 2005 and 2022. We assessed various covariates, including patient-, polyp-, and procedure-related factors, using propensity score matching a
Barium sulfate is an inert material used as a radiographic contrast medium during upper gastrointestinal contrast studies for evaluation of patients with dysphagia. Oral barium aspiration is an uncommon but wellreported complication of this procedure. While barium aspiration of small amounts may not cause any symptoms, massive barium aspiration can be life-threatening, particularly in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. In this case report, we describe an elderly patient with multiple
Abstract Background and Aims Chronic kidney disease (CKD), driven by Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension, increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Within the Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Syndrome framework, Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) is a marker of advanced CKM stage. This study examines whether CAC independently predicts CVD risk in CKD patients, beyond T2DM and HTN, to enhance CKM staging and refine risk stratification. Method This multicenter, prospective cohort stu
Background: The assessment of the risk of delayed bleeding following polypectomy in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those undergoing kidney failure with renal replacement therapy, has not been established. To address this issue, we conducted a high-dimensional propensity score-matched study to investigate whether CKD contributes to an increased risk of delayed post-polypectomy bleeding (PPB). Methods: A large cohort study and retrospective analysis of 20,052 patients who un
