15BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with fatal complications after radiotherapy (RT) for lung cancer patients; however, the role of proton therapy to reduce the incidence of life-threatening complications is unclear. Herein, we present the preliminary results of early-stage lung cancer patients having IPF and treated with RT, with a focus on the comparison between X-ray and proton therapy. METHODS: From January 2010 to October 2017, we retrospectively reviewed the medic

Definitive radiotherapy may be a tolerable treatment for early-stage NSCLC with COPD. However, poor survival in early-stage NSCLC patients with IPF or CPFE requires further study to identify and develop patient selection criteria as well as an optimal radiotherapy modality.
As a large-scale study of Koreans, we evaluated the association between BRCA mutation and the prevalence of non-breast and ovary cancers in first- and second-degree relatives of high-risk breast cancer patients. We organized familial pedigrees of 2555 patients with breast cancer who underwent genetic screening for BRCA1/2 in Samsung Medical Center between January 2002 and May 2018. Families with a member that had a history of cancer other than of the breast or ovary were regarded positive for ot
The non-pCR group showed significantly decreased 5-year OS and DFS rates compared to the pCR group, especially in triple negative and HER2-enriched breast cancer patients. A significant difference in survival rates and molecular subtypes was found in patients who failed to attain pCR.
BACKGROUND: We aim to identify the multifaceted risk factors that can affect the development of severe radiation pneumonitis (RP) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with curative high-dose radiotherapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 175 patients with stage-I-III NSCLC treated with curative thoracic X-ray radiotherapy at the Korea University Guro Hospital between June 2019 and June 2022. Treatment-relat
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the chronological changes over 14 years in the survival of Korean patients with breast cancer. We also sought to investigate the factors that may have influenced the changes in survival rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 17,776 breast cancer patients who were treated at Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and December 2013. Patient information was collected from the Asan database, including age at diagnosis, clinical manif
AIM: Leptomeningeal enhancement (LME) on preoperative brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) does not always indicate leptomeningeal seeding (LMS). With Stupp's regimen, authors have treated glioblastoma patients with LME on preoperative brain MRI but here we tried to find the clinical impact of LME. METHODS: From 2005 to 2015, 290 patients with glioblastoma have been treated with Stupp's regimen at Samsung Medical Center. Among these, 33 patients showed LME on preoperative brain MRI. We compare
Treatment of anal cancer by omitting PINI might be considered in selected patients with clinically uninvolved inguinal nodes.
A captured thrombus in preoperative IVCF was identified postoperatively in 16 patients (13.1%). Postoperative anticoagulation within 48 hours reduces the risk of captured thrombus in these cases.
Importance: Young patients with breast cancer have higher risk for developing contralateral breast cancer (CBC) and have epidemiologic characteristics different from those of older patients. Objective: To examine the incidence and peak occurrence of CBC according to age at primary breast cancer (PBC) surgery. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study included patients who were diagnosed with and underwent surgery for unilateral nonmetastatic breast cancer at Asan Medical Center, Korea
BACKGROUND: Oesophageal cancer with airway invasion presents a challenge for therapy and often has serious complications. We analysed the clinical outcomes of radiation therapy (RT) in patients with clinical T4b oesophageal cancer with airway invasion. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 73 patients with oesophageal cancer who had clinical T4 disease and who received RT between January 1994 and June 2017. Among them, 47 patients with clinical T4b disease with airway invas
BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced complication occurs in two phases: acute and chronic toxicities. Bowel perforation is regarded as a chronic toxicity associated with injury to vascular and connective tissue. It is usually noted a few months to several years after radiation treatment (RT). CASE: Herein, we present a case of sigmoid colon perforation relatively early after completion of RT. A 70-year-old woman was treated with laparoscopic radical hysterectomy and postoperative hypofractionated inten
