Abstract Background Increasing antibiotic resistance continues to focus on research into the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents. Due to its antimicrobial and wound healing-promoting activity, metal nanoparticles have attracted attention for dermatological applications. This study is designed to investigate the scope and bactericidal potential of zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZnFe 2 O 4 NPs), and the mechanism of anti-bacterial action along with cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and wound

Laponite is a clay-based material composed of synthetic disk-shaped crystalline nanoparticles with highly ionic, large surface area. These characteristics enable the intercalation and dissolution of biomolecules in Laponite-based drug delivery systems. Furthermore, Laponite's innate physicochemical properties and architecture enable the development of tunable pH-responsive drug delivery systems. Laponite's coagulation capacity and cation exchangeability determine its exchange capabilities, drug

The current state of biomarkers of mild traumatic brain injury
Han‐Jun Kim, Jack W. Tsao, Ansley Grimes Stanfill
SJR Q1JCI InsightOA

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common occurrence, with over 3 million cases reported every year in the United States. While research into the underlying pathophysiology is ongoing, there is an urgent need for better clinical guidelines that allow more consistent diagnosis of mTBI and ensure safe return-to-play timelines for athletes, nonathletes, and military personnel. The development of a suite of biomarkers that indicate the pathogenicity of mTBI could lead to clinically useful tools

The eye is one of the most complex organs in the human body, containing rich and critical physiological information (e.g., intraocular pressure, corneal temperature, and pH) as well as a library of metabolite biomarkers (e.g., glucose, proteins, and specific ions). Smart contact lenses (SCLs) can serve as a wearable intelligent ocular prosthetic device capable of noninvasive and continuous monitoring of various essential physical/biochemical parameters and drug loading/delivery for the treatment

Aerogel-based biomaterials are increasingly being considered for biomedical applications due to their unique properties such as high porosity, hierarchical porous network, and large specific pore surface area. Depending on the pore size of the aerogel, biological effects such as cell adhesion, fluid absorption, oxygen permeability, and metabolite exchange can be altered. Based on the diverse potential of aerogels in biomedical applications, this paper provides a comprehensive review of fabricati

Over the decades, researchers have strived to synthesize and modify nature-inspired biomaterials, with the primary aim to address the challenges of designing functional biomaterials for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Among these challenges, biocompatibility and cellular interactions have been extensively investigated. Some of the most desirable characteristics for biomaterials in these applications are the loading of bioactive molecules, strong adhesion to moist areas, improvement

Abstract Hemorrhage and bacterial infections are major hurdles in the management of life‐threatening surgical wounds. Most bioadhesives for wound closure lack sufficient hemostatic and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, they suffer from weak sealing efficacy, particularly for stretchable organs, such as the lung and bladder. Accordingly, there is an unmet need for mechanically robust hemostatic sealants with simultaneous antibacterial effects. Here, an injectable, photocrosslinkable, and str

Abstract— The manufacture of large‐area arrays of thin‐film transistors on polymer substrates using roll‐to‐roll (R2R) processes exclusively is being developed. Self‐aligned imprint lithography (SAIL) enables the patterning and alignment of submicron‐sized features on meter‐scaled flexible substrates in the R2R environment. SAIL solves the problem of precision interlayer registry on a moving web by encoding all the geometry information required for the entire patterning steps into a monolithic t

The tumor microenvironment consists of diverse, complex etiological factors. The matrix component of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) plays an important role not only in physical properties such as tissue rigidity but also in cancer progression and therapeutic responsiveness. Although significant efforts have been made to model desmoplastic PDAC, existing models could not fully recapitulate the etiology to mimic and understand the progression of PDAC. Here, two major components in desmopl

Injectable shear-thinning biomaterials (iSTBs) have great potential for in situ tissue regeneration through minimally invasive therapeutics. Previously, an iSTB was developed by combining gelatin with synthetic silicate nanoplatelets (SNPs) for potential application to hemostasis and endovascular embolization. Hence, iSTBs are synthesized by varying compositions of gelatin and SNPs to navigate their material, mechanical, rheological, and bioactive properties. All compositions (each component per

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a common cause of lower back pain. Programmed cell death (PCD) including apoptosis and autophagy is known to play key mechanistic roles in the development of IVDD. We hypothesized that the nucleus pulposus cells that make up the center of the IVD can be affected by aging and environmental oxygen concentration, thus affecting the development of IVDD. Here, we evaluated the phenotype changes and PCD signaling in nucleus pulposus cells in two different oxy

Dual Function of Wnt Signaling during Neuronal Differentiation of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells

SJR Q2Stem Cells InternationalOA

Activation of Wnt signaling enhances self-renewal of mouse embryonic and neural stem/progenitor cells. In contrast, undifferentiated ES cells show a very low level of endogenous Wnt signaling, and ectopic activation of Wnt signaling has been shown to block neuronal differentiation. Therefore, it remains unclear whether or not endogenous Wnt/β-catenin signaling is necessary for self-renewal or neuronal differentiation of ES cells. To investigate this, we examined the expression profiles of Wnt si

Abstract Sac embolization of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) remains clinically limited by endoleak recurrences. These recurrences are correlated with recanalization due to the presence of endothelial lining and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)‐mediated aneurysm progression. This study incorporates doxycycline (DOX), a well‐known sclerosant and MMPs inhibitor, into a shear‐thinning biomaterial (STB)‐based vascular embolizing hydrogel. The addition of DOX is expected to improve embolizing effic

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant and deadly form of liver cancer with limited treatment options. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization, a procedure that delivers embolic and chemotherapeutic agents through blood vessels, is a promising cancer treatment strategy. However, it still faces limitations, such as inefficient agent delivery and the inability to address tumor‐induced immunosuppression. Here, a drug‐eluting shear‐thinning hydrogel (DESTH) loaded with chemotherapeu
