15OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to translate and adapt the Primary Care Assessment Tool to assess the perceptions of the quality of primary care among patients in China and to examine the psychometric properties of the adapted Primary Care Assessment Tool Chinese version (PCAT-C). DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey to assess the validity and reliability of PCAT-C using standard psychometric techniques. SETTING: Outpatient departments of five state-level and provincial-level hospitals and four
BACKGROUND: Celecoxib has been shown to have antitumor effects that may be mediated through the cyclooxygenase-independent inhibition of Akt signaling. Here, we examined the effects of celecoxib on neointimal formation after balloon injury and its mechanism of action. METHODS AND RESULTS: In vitro experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of celecoxib on the Akt/GSK signaling axis and the viability of rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In vivo experiments examined the effects of
Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a central contributor to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including heart failure, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and cardiomyopathy. Mitochondria, known as the powerhouses of the cell, play a vital role in maintaining cardiac energy homeostasis, regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and controlling cell death pathways. Dysregulated mitochondrial function results in impaired adenosine triphosphate (AT
Mitochondrial dysfunction represents a pivotal characteristic of numerous neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. These conditions, distinguished by unique clinical and pathological features, exhibit shared pathways leading to neuronal damage, all of which are closely associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. The high metabolic requirements of neurons make even minor mitochondrial deficiencies high
Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo phenotypic changes in response to vascular injury such as angioplasty. Protein kinase G (PKG) has an important role in the process of VSMC phenotype switching. In this study, we examined whether rosiglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ agonist, could modulate VSMC phenotype through the PKG pathway to reduce neointimal hyperplasia after angioplasty. In vitro experiments showed that rosiglitazone inhibited the phenotype chang
The increasing global health crisis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington's disease is worsening because of a rapidly increasing aging population. Disease-modifying therapies continue to face development challenges due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which prevents more than 98% of small molecules and all biologics from entering the central nervous system. The therapeutic landscape for neurodegenerative diseases has recent
Sildenafil is known to reduce cardiac hypertrophy through cGMP-dependent protein kinase (cGK) activation. Studies have demonstrated that cGK has a central switching role in modulating vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotype in response to vascular injury. Here, we aimed to examine the effects of cGK activation by sildenafil on neointimal formation and platelet aggregation. After vascular injury, neointimal hyperplasia in rat carotid arteries was significantly reduced in the sildenafil-treat
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most important comorbidity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD exacerbations not only contribute to COPD progression but may also elevate the risk of CVD. This study aimed to determine whether COPD exacerbations increase the risk of subsequent CVD events using up to 15 years of prospective longitudinal follow-up data from the COPDGene (Genetic Epidemiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) study. METHODS AND
Although high LDL cholesterol levels increase the risk of ASCVD, low LDL cholesterol levels do not warrant safety from ASCVD. Therefore, individuals with low LDL cholesterol levels should be carefully monitored.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists now serve as therapeutic agents for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) beyond their original use for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This review combines molecular mechanisms with clinical evidence to demonstrate how GLP-1 agonists help lower cardiovascular risk for conditions, including atherosclerosis, heart failure, stroke, and vascular dementia. These agents produce multiple beneficial effects, which include anti-inflammatory action alo
Vascular dementia (VaD) represents the second-most common dementia type after Alzheimer's disease since it results from complications of cerebrovascular disease. Mixed pathologies combining vascular and neurodegenerative processes are the rule rather than exception in elderly dementia patients. The condition known as VaD includes various types of vascular damage that affect both large and small blood vessels in the brain which results in cerebral hypoperfusion, blood-brain barrier disruption, gl
OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of epidural infusion of morphine combined with small-dose naloxone on gastrointestinal interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) in rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 healthy New Zealand rabbits were selected as objects of study, and divided into normal saline control group (Group NS, n=20), morphine group (Group M, n=20), naloxone group (Group N, n=20), and morphine + naloxone group (Group NM, n=20). Rabbits in four the groups received epidural catheterization
Alzheimer's disease (AD) impacts more than half a million people worldwide, with no cure available. The regulatory approval of three anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), including aducanumab, lecanemab, and donanemab, has established immunotherapy as a therapeutic approach to modify disease progression. Its multifactorial pathology, which involves amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, tau neurofibrillary tangles, neuroinflammation, and cerebrovascular dysfunction, limits the efficacy of single-target th
