15Plant pathogenic Pseudomonas syringae deliver type III effector proteins into the host cell, where they function to manipulate host defense and metabolism to benefit the extracellular bacterial colony. The activity of these virulence factors can be monitored by plant disease resistance proteins deployed to "guard" the targeted host proteins. The Arabidopsis RIN4 protein is targeted by three different type III effectors. Specific manipulation of RIN4 by each of them leads to activation of either
One of several induced defense responses in plants is systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which is regulated by salicylic acid and in Arabidopsis by the NIM1/NPR1 protein. To identify additional components of the SAR pathway or other genes that regulate SAR-independent resistance, we performed genetic suppressor screens of mutagenized nim1-1 seedlings, which are highly susceptible to infection by Peronospora parasitica. We isolated the son1 (suppressor of nim1-1) mutant, which shows full restora
The Arabidopsis thaliana NIM1/NPR1 gene product is required for induction of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) by pathogens, salicylic acid (SA) or synthetic SA analogs. We identified, in a yeast two-hybrid screen, two NIM1/NPR1 interacting proteins, TGA2 and TGA5, which belong to the basic region, leucine zipper (bZIP) family of transcription factors. Both TGA2 and TGA5 strongly interact with NIM1/NPR1 in yeast and in vitro, and recognize the as-1 cis element found within the promoter of sever
OBJECTIVE: To compare non-invasive ventilation neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NIV-NAVA) and non-invasive pressure support (NIV-PS) in preterm infants on patient-ventilator synchrony. DESIGN: A randomised phase II crossover trial. SETTING: Neonatal intensive care units of two tertiary university hospitals in Korea. PATIENTS: Preterm infants born <32 weeks. INTERVENTION: NIV-NAVA and NIV-PS were applied in random order after ventilator weaning. Data were recorded for sequential 5 min period
1-Cys peroxiredoxin (1-cysPrx), a member of the peroxiredoxin family that contains a single conserved cysteine residue, reduces a broad spectrum of hydroperoxides. We studied changes in 1-cysPrx expression in rat lungs and lung cell lines in response to oxidative stress due to hyperoxia, H2O2, or paraquat. After 60 h of hyperoxia (>95% O2), mRNA and protein levels of 1-cysPrx and peroxidase activity were significantly elevated in rat lungs by approximately 1.5- to 2-fold compared with the contro
BACKGROUND: Owing to advances in the critical care of premature infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), BPD-associated pulmonary hypertension (PH) is becoming a growing concern. However, only few investigations were available on neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants with PH. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the impact of PH on growth and neurodevelopment at 18-24 months of corrected age (CA). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 394 infants (aged < 2
Currently, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) occurs almost exclusively in pre-term infants. In addition to prematurity, other factors like oxygen toxicity and inflammation can contribute to the pathogenesis. This study aimed to compare urinary inflammatory and oxidative stress markers between the no/mild BPD group and moderate/severe BPD group and between BPD cases with significant early lung disease like respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) ('classic' BPD) and with minimal early lung disease ('at
Strong correlations were observed between the RSSs on PND 14, 21, and 28 and death or subsequent severe BPD. The RSS could provide a simple estimate of severe BPD or death., Further research with a larger study population is necessary to validate the usefulness of the RSS for predicting severe BPD or death.
Self-aligned, n-channel, polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors with 15 μm channels were fabricated by recrystallizing amorphous silicon for 6 h at 500 °C. A thin nickel silicide at the source and drain was used to seed the crystallization. The channel mobility was initially 87 cm2/V s, and improved to 170 cm2/V s after hydrogenating the devices. The recrystallization velocity in the channel was measured optically and electrically, and found to be 3.5×10−8 cm/s; this value exceeds by two
The presence of an atrial left-to-right shunt was associated with PH in preterm infants with moderate or severe BPD. Close follow up is needed for infants with interatrial shunts, and a more tailored prognostic evaluation and treatment are recommended.
Peroxiredoxin I (Prx I) and peroxiredoxin II (Prx II) are found in abundance in the cytoplasm of cells and catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide with the use of electrons provided by thioredoxin. Here we examined Prx I and Prx II expression in rat lung during perinatal development and in response to hyperoxia. Prx I protein increased during late gestation and after birth fell to adult levels; conversely, Prx I mRNA increased after birth. Prx II protein concentration was unchanged in the pe
1-cys peroxiredoxin (1-cys Prx), the only member of a Prx subfamily that contains a single conserved cysteine residue, is abundant in lung. This bifunctional protein has both glutathione peroxidase and phospholipase A2 activities compatible with a role both in protection against lung oxidant injury and also in lung phospholipid metabolism. Here we studied the developmental expression of 1-cys Prx in rat lungs and hormonal effects on protein expression in human and rat lung cells. There was littl
The intracellular level of cyclic 3',5'-AMP (cAMP), a signaling molecule that mediates a variety of cellular processes, is finely modulated by the regulation of its synthesis, excretion, and degradation. In this study, cAMP phosphodiesterase (CpdA), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cAMP to AMP, was characterized in a pathogenic bacterium, Vibrio vulnificus. The cpdA gene exists in an operon composed of mutT, yqiB, cpdA, and yqiA, the transcription of which was initiated at position -22
Fluconazole prophylaxis was not efficacious in decreasing IFIs in ELBW infants. There is a need for targeting prophylaxis to greatest risk population and prospective studies to measure the long-term effect of fluconazole prophylaxis on the emergence of organisms with antifungal resistance.
