Infection is a major cause of mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study describes infectious complications in SLE patients and analyzes the risk factors for infection at the time of SLE diagnosis and during the course of SLE in a case-control study. Of 110 patients enrolled, 42 (38%) had at least 1 episode of infectious disease. The incidence of infectious disease was 4.4/100 patient-years (py) with a total follow-up duration of 954 y. In multivariate analysis, in

The immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) biomarker is widely practiced in breast tissue analysis, preclinical studies, and diagnostic decisions, guiding cancer treatment and investigation of pathogenesis. HER2 staining demands laborious tissue treatment and chemical processing performed by a histotechnologist, which typically takes one day to prepare in a laboratory, increasing analysis time and associated costs. Here, we describe a deep learn

SJR Q1Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology Arthroscopy

PURPOSE: This study investigated the outcomes of pullout fixation for medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs) in patients ≤ 60 years old versus patients > 60 years old. It was hypothesized that older patients would demonstrate results comparable with those of younger patients. METHODS: Patients with pullout fixation who were followed-up for more than 5 years were included. Patients were categorized into two groups based on age (group A, ≤ 60 years; group B, > 60 years). The Lysholm score,

Mycobacteruim kansasii occasionally causes disseminated infection with poor outcome in immunocompromised patients. We report the first case of disseminated M. kansasii infection associated with multiple skin lesions in a 48-yr-old male with myelodysplastic syndrome. The patient continuously had taken glucocorticoid during 21 months and had multiple skin lesions developed before 9 months without complete resolution until admission. Skin and mediastinoscopic paratracheal lymph node (LN) biopsies s

SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The increasing incidence of Candida glabrata and Candida krusei infections is a significant problem because they are generally more resistant to fluconazole. We compared the risk factors associated with C. glabrata and C. krusei fungemia with Candida albicans fungemia and examined the clinical manifestations and prognostic factors associated with candidemia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed demographic data, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and outcomes associated with

Low muscle mass, low muscle function, and sarcopenia in the urban and rural elderly

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Health outcomes of the elderly vary between rural and urban areas. Sarcopenia is diagnosed as loss of muscle strength or impaired physical performance, namely "low muscle function" and low muscle mass. Outcomes of low muscle mass and low muscle function are not equal. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of low muscle mass, low muscle function, and sarcopenia in rural and urban populations and to determine whether regional differences were associated with each of these components. Risk factors and outcomes of bloodstream infections with metallo-β-lactamase-producing Acinetobacter

The spread of Gram-negative bacilli with acquired metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) threatens the successful treatment of major nosocomial infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in the clinical characteristics of bacteremia caused by MBL-producing Acinetobacter species and MBL non-producing isolates. Two retrospective case-control studies were conducted using data on patients with Acinetobacter bacteremia, who were admitted between January 2001 and December 2005 at a

SJR Q1Biomedical Optics ExpressOA

Challenges in identifying a glioblastoma’s infiltrative edge during neurosurgical procedures result in rapid recurrence. A label-free fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIm) device was used to evaluate glioblastoma’s infiltrative edge in vivo in 15 patients (89 samples). FLIm data were analyzed according to tumor cell density, infiltrating tissue type (gray and white matter), and diagnosis history (new or recurrent). Infiltrations in white matter from new glioblastomas showed decreasing lifetimes a

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to identify the risk factors for recurrent catheter-related infections (CRIs) following non-tunneled central venous catheter (CVC) reinsertion after catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). METHODS: A retrospective cohort was constructed from a computer database for patients who underwent reinsertion of a non-tunneled CVC after a CRBSI during the period January 2004 to December 2007. Among these patients, recurrent CRI cases were selected through an

Dermatomyositis with inclusion body myositis pathology

SJR Q1Muscle & Nerve

The pathogenic role of inflammation in inclusion body myositis (IBM) remains uncertain. A 63-year-old man developed a severe, rapidly progressive myopathy with clinical features typical of dermatomyositis (DM), but muscle pathology was typical of IBM. Treatment with prednisone and methotrexate resulted in complete remission of symptoms. Together with two similar cases reported previously, this case suggests that the inflammatory process of DM may trigger the pathologic changes of IBM.

DESIGN: A retrospective cohort and case-control study. SETTING: A tertiary care university hospital and referral center in Seoul, Korea. METHODS: We identifie

We here characterize changes in metabolite patterns in glioblastoma patients undergoing surgery and concurrent chemoradiation using machine learning (ML) algorithms to characterize metabolic changes during different stages of the treatment protocol. We examined 105 plasma specimens (before surgery, 2 days after surgical resection, before starting concurrent chemoradiation, and immediately after chemoradiation) from 36 patients with isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wildtype glioblastoma. Metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) production usually results in high-level resistance to most β-lactams, and a rapid spread of MBL producing major gram-negative pathogens is a matter of particular concern worldwide. However, clinical data are scarce and most studies compared MBL producer (MP) with MBL non-producer (MNP) strains which included carbapenem susceptible isolates. Therefore, we collected clinical data of patients in whom imipenem-nonsusceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Acinetobacter ba
