15Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a local non-thermal ablative technique currently used to treat solid tumors. Here, we investigated the clinical potency and safety of IRE with an endoscope in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Pigs were electroporated with recently designed endoscopic IRE catheters in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Two successive strategies were introduced to optimize the electrical energy for the digestive tract. First, each organ was electroporated and the energy up
Injectable thermo-sensitive chitosan hydrogels have recently been developed for the use of submucosal fluids in endoscopic submucosal dissections (ESD). This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of chitosan hydrogels during ESD. Submucosal fluids were administered as follows: 0.9% normal saline (NS), 0.4% hyaluronic acid (HA) and chitosan/β-glycerophosphate (CS/GP) hydrogel. Each solution was administered twice into the stomach and colon of a pig, with a total of 72 ESD procedures
The regulation of apoptosis is the primary goal of ablation therapy. Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a promising non-thermal tissue ablation-based therapy that induces apoptosis by manipulating electrical conditions. This study aimed to investigate IRE-induced gastric tissue apoptosis in response to changes in the electric field intensity, followed by the repair process. Among the 52 rats used in this study, 24 were used to explore apoptosis, and 28 were used to study regeneration. The apo
Abstract Nonthermal irreversible electroporation (NTIRE) is emerging as a promising tissue ablation technique. However, maintaining irreversible electroporation (IRE) electrodes against displacement during strong esophageal spasms remains an obstacle. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of newly designed balloon-type endoscopic IRE catheters. Six pigs were randomly allocated to each catheter group, and each pig was subjected to four ablations at alternating voltages of 15
INTRODUCTION: Polyethylene glycol with ascorbic acid (PEG/Asc) is a well-established bowel preparation solution with guaranteed effectiveness and safety. A new low-volume agent, 1 L-PEG/Asc, has recently been released. This study aimed to compare the bowel cleansing efficacy and safety of 1 L-PEG/Asc and 2 L-PEG/Asc administered to adult outpatients in a split-dose manner. METHODS: Outpatients undergoing colonoscopy enrolled in a single-blinded, single-center, noninferiority study conducted betw
Aqueous chitosan was superior to normal saline and Eleview® and was noninferior to TS-905. A three-dimensional sensor and the measured parameters were effective and useful for evaluating the performance of submucosal fluids.
BACKGROUND: Advanced endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) cannulation strategies for difficult cases could replace conventional techniques, in which assistants control guidewires. We aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of a new salvage cannulation strategy, physician-controlled wire-guided cannulation (PCWGC), with those of a conventional strategy. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with naïve papillae who underwent ERCP between January 2018 and December 20
BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study evaluated the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of Korean gastric cancer survivors (GCSs) aged ≥ 19 years using preference-based measurements with a converted health utility index. METHODS: Data from the fourth to eighth cycles of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2007 to 2020 were analyzed. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to mitigate baseline covariate imbalances between the GCS group and the non-GCS group
339 Background: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a new destructive technique that removes undesirable tissues using an electric field. Main mechanism of IRE is through the creation of permanent, nano-sized pores on the cell membranes, resulting in cell death. It poses, however, one technical challenge as contractions of smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract may prevent IRE from effectively electroporate the cell. The present study aims to demonstrate the applicability of this newly de
<i>Helicobacter pylori</i> (<i>H. pylori</i>) is a bacterium that colonizes the human stomach, leading to various gastrointestinal diseases including gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. There is no gold standard test that relies entirely on one method in <i>H. pylori</i> diagnosis. We must be aware of the pros and cons of various testing methods to perform an appropriate test according to the situation. Accurate diagnosis and eradication therapy are
Iatrogenic stomach perforation is a detrimental, irreversible, and fatal condition. Traditional surgery and endoscopic suturing clips and devices have been introduced to seal holes and prevent sepsis and disease progression. However, the development of endoscopic devices for perforations remains challenging, with no standard device available. This study investigates the superficial layer approximation strengths of the newly designed ENDOCRAB system for gastric wall defects. Thirty porcine stomac
