Interference mitigation using uplink power control for two-tier femtocell networks
Han‐Shin Jo, Cheol Mun, June Moon, Jong‐Gwan Yook
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications

This paper proposes two interference mitigation strategies that adjust the maximum transmit power of femtocell users to suppress the cross-tier interference at a macrocell base station (BS). The open-loop and the closed-loop control suppress the cross-tier interference less than a fixed threshold and an adaptive threshold based on the noise and interference (NI) level at the macrocell BS, respectively. Simulation results show that both schemes effectively compensate the uplink throughput degrada

Path Loss Prediction Based on Machine Learning Techniques: Principal Component Analysis, Artificial Neural Network, and Gaussian Process
Han‐Shin Jo, Chanshin Park, Eunhyoung Lee, Haing Kun Choi, Jaedon Park
SJR Q1SensorsOA

Although various linear log-distance path loss models have been developed for wireless sensor networks, advanced models are required to more accurately and flexibly represent the path loss for complex environments. This paper proposes a machine learning framework for modeling path loss using a combination of three key techniques: artificial neural network (ANN)-based multi-dimensional regression, Gaussian process-based variance analysis, and principle component analysis (PCA)-aided feature selec

Self-Optimized Coverage Coordination in Femtocell Networks
Han‐Shin Jo, Cheol Mun, June Moon, Jong‐Gwan Yook
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Wireless CommunicationsOA

This paper proposes a self-optimized coverage coordination scheme for two-tier femtocell networks, in which a femtocell base station adjusts the transmit power based on the statistics of the signal and the interference power that is measured at a femtocell downlink. Furthermore, an analytic expression is derived for the coverage leakage probability that a femtocell coverage area leaks into an outdoor macrocell. The coverage analysis is verified by simulation, which shows that the proposed scheme

Open, closed, and shared access femtocells in the downlink
Han‐Shin Jo, Ping Xia, Jeffrey G. Andrews
SJR Q2EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and NetworkingOA

A fundamental choice in femtocell deployments is the set of users which are allowed to access each femtocell. Closed access restricts the set to specifically registered users, while open access allows any mobile subscriber to use any femtocell. Which one is preferable depends strongly on the distance between the macrocell base station (MBS) and femtocell. The main results of the this article are lemmas which provide expressions for the signal-to-interference-plus-to-noise ratio (SINR) distributi

Outage Probability for Heterogeneous Cellular Networks with Biased Cell Association
Han‐Shin Jo, Young Jin Sang, Ping Xia, Jeffrey G. Andrews

In this paper we develop a tractable framework for SINR analysis in downlink heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with flexible cell association. The HCN is modeled as a multi-tier cellular network where each tier's base stations (BSs) are randomly located and have a unique transmit power, path loss exponent, spatial density, and bias towards admitting users. We implicitly assume every BS has full queues. From this model, we derive the outage probability of a typical user in the network, which

Downlink Femtocell Networks: Open or Closed?
Han‐Shin Jo, Ping Xia, Jeffrey G. Andrews

A fundamental choice in femtocell deployments is the set of users which are allowed to access each femtocell. Closed access restricts the set to specifically registered users, while open access allows any mobile subscriber to use any femtocell. The main results of the paper are lemmas which provide expressions for the SINR distribution for various zones within a cell as a function of this MBS-femto distance. The average sum throughput (or any other SINR-based metric) of home and cellular users u

The coexistence of OFDM-based systems beyond 3G with fixed service microwave systems
Han‐Shin Jo, Hyungoo Yoon, Jae-Woo Lim, Woo-Ghee Chung, Jong‐Gwan Yook, Han‐Kyu Park
SJR Q1Journal of Communications and Networks

In this paper, we study the coexistence of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based systems beyond 3G (B3G) and point-to-point (P-P) fixed service (FS) microwave systems. The advanced general analytical model derived via a power spectral density (PSD) analysis proposed in this paper has two advantages in comparison with the conventional minimum coupling loss (MCL) method. First, the interfering signal power that appears in the band of a victim system can be easily assessed without

Path Loss Characteristics for IMT-Advanced Systems in Residential and Street Environments
Han‐Shin Jo, Jong‐Gwan Yook
SJR Q1IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters

This letter presents the measured path loss characteristics in microcellular residential and street environments at 3.4-, 5.3-, and 6.4-GHz band signals. Path loss characteristics on the different residential areas are thoroughly investigated and compared to a modified Hata model, and a new path loss model based on the modified Hata model is developed from the measurement of the residential area. A two-ray model is applied to analyze the path loss characteristics in a line-of-sight (LOS) street.

Deep Q-Learning-Based Transmission Power Control of a High Altitude Platform Station with Spectrum Sharing
Seongjun Jo, Wooyeol Yang, Haing Kun Choi, Eonsu Noh, Han‐Shin Jo, Jaedon Park
SJR Q1SensorsOA

A High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) can facilitate high-speed data communication over wide areas using high-power line-of-sight communication; however, it can significantly interfere with existing systems. Given spectrum sharing with existing systems, the HAPS transmission power must be adjusted to satisfy the interference requirement for incumbent protection. However, excessive transmission power reduction can lead to severe degradation of the HAPS coverage. To solve this problem, we propos

Codebook-Based Precoding for SDMA-OFDMA with Spectrum Sharing
Han‐Shin Jo
SJR Q2ETRI Journal

This paper focuses on codebook-based precoding for space-division multiple access/orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (SDMA-OFDMA) systems aiming to guarantee high throughput for their users as well as to mitigate interference to fixed satellite service (FSS). A systematic design of SDMA codebook for subband-based OFDMA is proposed, which forms multiple orthogonal beams with common spatial null in the direction of a victim FSS earth station (ES). The design enables both transmitter and

Performance Analysis of NB-IoT Uplink in Low Earth Orbit Non-Terrestrial Networks
Min-Gyu Kim, Han‐Shin Jo
SJR Q1SensorsOA

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) over non-terrestrial networks (NTN) is the most promising candidate technology supporting 5G massive machine-type communication. Compared to geostationary earth orbit, low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication has the advantage of low propagation loss, but suffers from high Doppler shift. The 3GPP proposes Doppler shift pre-compensation for each beam region of the satellite. However, user equipment farther f

An Advanced MCL Method for Assessing Interference Potential of OFDM-Based Systems beyond 3G with Dynamic Power Allocation
Han‐Shin Jo, Hyungoo Yoon, Jae-Woo Lim, Jong‐Gwan Yook

In this paper, the advanced general analytical method, namely advanced minimum coupling loss (A-MCL) method is proposed. The A-MCL method utilizes a power spectral density (PSD) analysis, and bears two advantages, compared to the conventional minimum coupling loss (MCL) method. First, it can calculate out of band emissions from the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based systems beyond 3G (B3G) without a spectrum emission mask. Secondly, it can be applicable to coexistence analys
