SJR Q1Proceedings of the National Academy of SciencesOA

We demonstrate a highly sensitive nanoparticle and virus detection method by using a thermal-stabilized reference interferometer in conjunction with an ultrahigh-Q microcavity. Sensitivity is sufficient to resolve shifts caused by binding of individual nanobeads in solution down to a record radius of 12.5 nm, a size approaching that of single protein molecules. A histogram of wavelength shift versus nanoparticle radius shows that particle size can be inferred from shift maxima. Additionally, the

Ultra-low-loss optical delay line on a silicon chip
Hansuek Lee, Tong Chen, Jiang Li, Oskar Painter, Kerry J. Vahala
SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Light propagation through an optical fibre causes a long, non-resonant (true) time delay used in numerous applications. In contrast to how it is deployed in optical communication systems, fibre is coiled in these applications to reduce footprint. This is a configuration better suited for a chip-based waveguide that would improve shock resistance, and afford the possibility of integration for system-on-a-chip functionality. However, integrated waveguide attenuation rates lag far behind the corres

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Frequency references are indispensable to radio, microwave and time keeping systems, with far reaching applications in navigation, communication, remote sensing and basic science. Over the past decade, there has been an optical revolution in time keeping and microwave generation that promises to ultimately impact all of these areas. Indeed, the most precise clocks and lowest noise microwave signals are now based on a laser with short-term stability derived from a reference cavity. In spite of th

Ultrastable microwave and soliton-pulse generation from fibre-photonic-stabilized microcombs

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Abstract The ability to generate lower-noise microwaves has greatly advanced high-speed, high-precision scientific and engineering fields. Microcombs have high potential for generating such low-noise microwaves from chip-scale devices. To realize an ultralow-noise performance over a wider Fourier frequency range and longer time scale, which is required for many high-precision applications, free-running microcombs must be locked to more stable reference sources. However, ultrastable reference sou

Self-stabilized soliton generation in a microresonator through mode-pulled Brillouin lasing

SJR Q1Optics Letters

Reducing the complexity required for starting and maintaining a soliton state has been a major task to fully miniaturize soliton microcombs including the accompanying external operating systems. Here we experimentally examine the generative process of a self-stabilized soliton in which a continuous-wave pump detuned on the thermally stable blue side of a resonance generates a Brillouin lasing signal that relays the pump power to the soliton pulses via intracavity mode-coupling without breaking t

Performance analysis of nanocluster-Si sensitized Er-doped waveguide amplifier using top-pumped 470nm LED

SJR Q1Optics ExpressOA

We analyze the performance of nanocrystal-Si (nc-Si) sensitized Er-doped waveguide amplifier using coupled nc-Si-Erbium rate equation, and suggest novel structures / operation methods which can be used to enhance its performance figures. With 2-dimensional modified propagation equation applied for the pump / signal waves along with modest assumptions on design parameters, we show that 10dB of gain with 0dBm input signal can be achieved with currently available pump LED power.

Supercontinuum generation in As2S3 waveguides fabricated without direct etching

SJR Q1Optics Letters

We report a supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a waveguide that spontaneously forms without an etching process during the deposition of a core material on a preformed ${\rm{Si}}{{\rm{O}}_2}$ substructure. The mechanism of dispersion control for this new, to the best of our knowledge, type of waveguide is analyzed by numerical simulation, which results in a design rule to achieve a target dispersion profile by adjusting the substructure geometry. SCG is experimentally demonstrated with a waveguid

Controlling the optical coupling between a micro-resonator and waveguide plays a key role in on-chip photonic circuits. Here, we demonstrate a two-point coupled lithium niobate (LN) racetrack micro-resonator that enables us to electro-optically traverse a full set of the zero-, under-, critical-, and over-coupling regimes with minimized disturbance of the intrinsic properties of the resonant mode. The modulation between the zero- and critical-coupling conditions cost a resonant frequency shift o

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Ultra-high-Q optical resonators have facilitated advancements in on-chip photonics by harnessing nonlinear functionalities. While these breakthroughs, primarily focused on the near-infrared region, have extended interest to longer wavelengths holding importance for molecule science, the absence of ultra-high-Q resonators in this region remains a significant challenge. Here, we have developed on-chip microresonators with a remarkable Q-factor of 38 million at 3.86 μm wavelength, surpassing previo

Integrated optical modulators (IOMs) are crucial components of on-chip photonic circuits. However, most conventional IOMs are restricted to specific spectral bands. Here, we leveraged the wide transparency window of lithium niobate in conjunction with the two-pulley coupled resonator method. This approach led to the development of a hyperband electro-optic (EO) modulator that operates over an expansive spectral range from 775 to 1550 nm on a single device. The demonstrated EO modulator exhibits
