15The use of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in cell-based therapy has attracted extensive interest in the field of regenerative medicine, and it shows applications to numerous incurable diseases. hMSCs show several superior properties for therapeutic use compared to other types of stem cells. Different cell types are discussed in terms of their advantages and disadvantages, with focus on the characteristics of hMSCs. hMSCs can proliferate readily and produce differentiated cells that can sub
The mucin-hypersecreting bile duct tumor can be characterized by a striking homology with IPMT of the pancreas in clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features.
ES-induced hemorrhage occurred in 10% of the patients studied. The use of needle-knife sphincterotomy and the cutting speed were independent risk factors for the occurrence of bleeding. Once bleeding occurred, its severity was affected by an associated ampullary lesion (impacted stone or cancer) or coagulopathy. Endoscopic hemostasis with epinephrine and/or alcohol was effective and safe in ES-induced hemorrhage.
The spontaneous regression of metastatic lesions from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is extremely rare, but may be encountered following cytoreductive treatments. We report a case of a recurrent RCC with multiple metastatic lesions which spontaneously regressed after undergoing radiofrequency ablation of the renal tumor.
Aortic annular area and Valsalva sinus diameter are independent determinants for iEOA measured by preoperative CT; surgeon-dependent factors are also significant determinants in SAVR.
Background Despite advance in off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) grafting, there are large debating issues regarding survival benefit between OPCAB and on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of this study is to address appropriateness of OPCAB approach in patients with ischemic heart disease having multiple vessels using South Korea national cohort data. Methods To evaluate the safety and efficacy of OPCAB, we accessed all causes of death, late repeat revascularization, hos
We measured heating of isotonic saline by three fluid warmers in six experiments: saline at 5 °C or 20 °C delivered at 30, 50 or 100 ml.min(-1) . At the three flow rates, the enFLOW(®) , buddy lite(™) and ThermoSens(®) systems heated 5 °C saline to mean (SD) temperatures of: 41.1 (0.5) °C, 37.7 (0.6) °C and 39.1 (0.6) °C; to 40.3 (0.8) °C, 33.9 (1.6) °C and 39.3 (0.7) °C; and to 37.1 (0.8) °C, 24.0 (1.3) °C and 37.6 (1.0) °C, respectively, p < 0.0001 for each experiment. The mean (SD) times take
BCOR alterations are described in ultra-rare infantile soft tissue sarcomas including primitive myxoid mesenchymal tumor of infancy and undifferentiated round cell sarcoma (URCS). Previous reports often describe dismal outcomes. Thus, we undertook a retrospective, multi-institutional study of infants with BCOR -rearranged soft tissue sarcomas. Nine patients aged 6 weeks to 15 months were identified. One tumor carried a BCOR :: CCNB3 fusion, whereas 7 tumors harbored internal tandem duplication o
To evaluate the performance and safety of a newly developed blood warmer (ThermoSens), we tested its heating capability under various conditions using isotonic saline and hemolysis analysis with swine blood. The following two in vitro tests were performed: (i) To investigate the performance of the device, the inflow and outflow temperatures were measured at various flow rates (30, 50, and 100 mL/min) using cold (5°C) and room temperature (20°C) isotonic saline (0.9%). Several parameters were mea
OBJECTIVES: The issue of prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM) after surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) has been a controversial topic. We sought to evaluate the long-term clinical impacts of PPM in patients undergoing SAVR in an updated, homogeneous cohort. METHODS: Using the prospective institutional database, we identified 895 adult patients (median age 66, interquartile range 58-72; 45.6% women) who underwent isolated SAVR from January 2000 to March 2016. Those with pure aortic insufficien
BACKGROUND: We examined the relationship between blood transfusion and long-term adverse events to evaluate the clinical impact of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion on patients undergoing cardiac valve surgery. METHODS: From the National Health Insurance Service database, individuals undergoing heart valve surgery were verified, including aortic valve (AV), mitral valve (MV), tricuspid valve (TV), and complex valves (more than 2 valve surgeries). The interested outcomes were incidence of death, i
