Residential Satisfaction Among Public Housing Residents Living in Social-Mix Housing Complexes: The Case of the Seoul Metropolitan Area, Korea
Hee-Jung Jun, Hyun Jeong
SJR Q1Urban Policy and Research

This study asks how a social mix policy that mixes public housing with private housing in the same housing complex is associated with residential satisfaction among public housing residents in Korea. We also ask if mixture types between public and private housing make a difference in the residential satisfaction of public housing residents. By analyzing the 2011 Korea Housing Survey for Public Housing Residents, we find that living in the independent type that includes only public housing and th

Linking resilience and sustainability in Ohio township planning
Hee-Jung Jun, Maria Manta Conroy
SJR Q1Journal of Environmental Planning and Management

This study connects resilience and sustainability through comprehensive planning. We argue that communities with a comprehensive plan which promotes sustainable development exhibit resilience. We analyze 46 township plans in Central Ohio, in the Midwestern Region of the United States, to examine plan sustainability. The findings show that the township plans do not provide balanced support of sustainability principles and so are not adequately prepared to withstand and adapt to exogenous shocks.

Determinants of Neighborhood Change
Hee-Jung Jun
SJR Q1Urban Affairs Review

This study hypothesizes that neighborhood change is produced by interactions of factors at the neighborhood, municipal, and metropolitan scales. I present a multilevel analysis of neighborhood change in 35 metropolitan areas between the years 1990 and 2000. The results show that factors at all three scales are relevant to neighborhood change. While the municipal context has been missing in the literature, this study finds that neighborhoods stay economically healthier in smaller and more homogen

The influence of attitudes on university bicycle commuting: Considering bicycling experience levels
Mi Namgung, Hee-Jung Jun
SJR Q1International Journal of Sustainable Transportation

This study examined attitudes towards bicycling among bicycle users with different experience levels and how these attitudes influence the bicycle use. The study area is The Ohio State University’s main campus and we used the 2015 Campus Transportation Survey that asked questions about different commuting modes to the campus, bicycling experience levels, attitudes toward bicycle use, and demographic characteristics. For the empirical analysis, we grouped 20 attitudinal statements on bicycling in

Gender Difference and Spatial Heterogeneity in Local Obesity
Hee-Jung Jun, Mi Namgung
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This study asks if there is gender-specific spatial heterogeneity in local obesity. By using the 2015 Korea Community Health Survey and employing spatial analyses, this study found that there is considerable gender-specific spatial heterogeneity in local obesity rates. More specifically, we found that: (1) local obesity rates are more spatially dependent for women than for men; (2) environmental factors, in general, have stronger effects on local obesity rates for women than for men; (3) environ

Planning process influences on sustainability in Ohio township plans
Maria Manta Conroy, Hee-Jung Jun
SJR Q1Journal of Environmental Planning and Management

This study examines planning process influences on plan sustainability scores for 46 township plans in Central Ohio, in the Midwestern Region of the United States. Townships face many similar development challenges as exurban communities along with cultures and economies which straddle urban and rural perspectives. The empirical analysis shows that participation breadth is positively related to sustainability scores, while the use of the sustainability concept in the planning process is negative

The Effect of Racial and Ethnic Composition on Neighborhood Economic Change: A Multilevel and Longitudinal Look
Hee-Jung Jun
SJR Q1Housing Studies

This article examines the relationship between racial/ethnic composition and neighborhood economic change in a multilevel and longitudinal framework. I employ multilevel modeling to examine how neighborhood minority composition is associated with change in neighborhood relative economic status from 1970 to 2010 in the largest 100 metropolitan areas of the USA. In the multilevel framework, the empirical analysis shows that the shares of black and Hispanic residents are consistently negatively rel

Spillover effects in neighborhood housing value change: a spatial analysis
Hee-Jung Jun
SJR Q1Housing Studies

Despite numerous studies on neighborhood change, the importance of spatial dependence has largely been overlooked. This study aims to examine spillover effects among neighborhood change factors, which means that demographic, housing, and socio-economic characteristics in nearby neighborhoods affect housing value change in a given neighborhood. In analyzing spillover effects, this study used the Neighborhood Change Data Base that includes decennial census data in the U.S. and employed a spatial D

Comprehensive Planning and Sustainability in Georgia's Exurbs
Hee-Jung Jun, Maria Manta Conroy
SJR Q2Journal of Environmental Policy & Planning

This study examines how well Georgia's exurbs in the US promote sustainable development. We assessed 22 exurban plans in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area using an established content analysis method and compared sustainability scores of the exurban plans with those of other city and township plans. The key finding is that Georgia's state-based comprehensive planning programme enhances the sustainability scores of exurban plans by providing a guideline for local comprehensive planning efforts. The Effect of Discrimination on Stress among Public Housing Residents: A Comparative Study between Social-Mix and Independent Public Housing Complexes
Hee-Jung Jun, Soojeong Han
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This study aims to examine the differential effect of discrimination on stress between social-mix and independent public housing complexes. We analyzed the 2017 Seoul Public Housing Residents Panel Study data that were collected from public housing residents living in Seoul, Korea by running ordinal logit analyses. The empirical analysis shows that discrimination has a lower effect on stress in social-mix housing complexes than in independent public housing complexes. In addition, the moderating

The Effect of Cross-Level Interaction between Community Factors and Social Capital among Individuals on Physical Activity: Considering Gender Difference
Hee-Jung Jun, Seoyeon Park
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This study examines the effect of cross-level interaction between community physical environment and social capital among individuals on physical activity by considering gender difference. In this regard, we ask two research questions: (1) What is the effect of cross-level interaction between community factors and social capital among individuals on physical activity? (2) Is there gender difference in the effect of the cross-level interaction? To examine the research questions, this study used t
