PubMed

PURPOSE: Mutations in the alpha(1F) subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) have been shown to cause incomplete congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB2). The purpose of this study was to dentify which of the four beta subunits of VDCCs participates in the formation of this channel at the photoreceptor synapse and to determine how its absence affects visual processing. METHODS: Mice without each of the four known beta subunits of VDCCs were generated by gene targeting and trans

SJR Q1The Journal of Immunology

IL-12p70 plays a pivotal role in regulating the Th1/Th2 balance in the initial stage of immune responses. In contrast, IL-12p40, which is produced excess over IL-12p70, has been known to down-regulate IL-12p70-mediated responses by acting as an antagonist. To investigate in vivo function of IL-12p40, RH7777 rat hepatoma cells were engineered to inducibly express mouse IL-12p40 under the tight control of doxycycline (dox). In the absence of dox, s.c. injection of these cells into syngeneic rat wa

Prognostic ability of intraoperative electromyographic monitoring during microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm to predict lateral spread response outcome
Sung Ho Lee, Bong Jin Park, Hee Sup Shin, Chang Kyu Park, Bong Arm Rhee, Young Jin Lim
SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

OBJECTIVE Abnormal lateral spread response (LSR) is a typical finding in facial electromyography (EMG) in patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). Although intraoperative monitoring of LSR has been widely used during microvascular decompression (MVD), the prognostic value of this monitoring is still debated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether such monitoring exhibits prognostic value for the alleviation of LSR after treatment of HFS. METHODS Between January 2009 and December 2013, a

SJR Q3Journal of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular NeurosurgeryOA

OBJECTIVE: In addition to obliterating the aneurysm using clipping or coiling, decompressive surgery for control of rising intracranial pressure (ICP) is thought to be crucial to prevention of adverse outcomes in patients with poor grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We evaluated the clinical characteristics of patients with poor-grade aSAH, and compared outcomes of aneurysmal clipping with simultaneous decompressive surgery to those of coil embolization followed by decompression. BACKGROUND: It is important to manage inflammation after craniotomy. It may be prudent to reduce the excessive usage of antibiotics and to add supplementary treatments like acupuncture, which would be effective and safe. However, there are only a few studies available to date on the effects of acupuncture on anti-inflammatory response after craniotomy. The aim of this study was to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of acupuncture in patients after a craniotomy. METHODS: This study was a singl

Extended Pneumocephalus after Drainage of Chronic Subdural Hematoma Associated with Intracranial Hypotension : Case Report with Pathophysiologic Consideration
Hee Sup Shin, Seung Hwan Lee, Hak Cheol Ko, Jun Seok Koh
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

Chronic subdural hematoma (SDH) is a well-known disease entity and is traditionally managed with surgery. However, when associated with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH), the treatment strategy ought to be modified, as classical treatment could lead to unwanted consequences. A 59-year-old man presented with a case of SIH that manifested as a bilateral chronic SDH. He developed fatal extensive pneumocephalus and SDH re-accumulation as a complication of burr-hole drainage. Despite applica

Using the Snare System to Cross the Acute-Angled Vertebrobasilar Junction in Treating Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Aneurysm with the Stent-Assisted Method via a Retrograde Approach
Hee Sup Shin, Chang‐Woo Ryu, Jun Seok Koh, Seung Hwan Lee
SJR Q2Interventional NeuroradiologyOA

Retrograde stenting via the contralateral vertebral artery (VA) is a safe and effective treatment for posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysm. Many methods, including tip shaping and the looping technique, have been attempted as ways to cross the vertebrobasilar (VB) junction. Here, we introduce an alternative method using a Snare system to overcome the acute-angled VB junction after repeated failures using other techniques. The Snare system was navigated to the proximal basilar art
