15AIM: To compare outcomes from radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and hepatectomy for treatment of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM). METHODS: From January 2000 to December 2009, 408 patients underwent curative intent treatment for CRLM. We excluded patients using the criteria: size of CRLM > 3 cm, number of CRLM ≥ 5, percutaneous RFA, follow-up period < 12 mo, double primary cancer, or treatment with both RFA and hepatectomy. We matched 51 patients who underwent RFA with 102 patients who underwent h
Biliary tract cancer patients have altered microbiome composition, which represents a promising biomarker to differentiate malignant biliary tract disease from normal control group.
BACKGROUND: Transduodenal ampullectomy (TDA) is a less invasive procedure than pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). However, the outcomes of TDA and PD have been compared rarely in early ampullary cancer. METHODS: From September 1994 to June 2013, the patients who underwent curative surgery for Tis or T1 ampulla of Vater neoplasm were identified. The patients were divided into two groups according to the types of surgery; TDA group and PD group. The patient characteristics and survival outcomes were re
Secondary hepatectomy for single recurrent CRLM is as effective as primary surgical treatment for single recurrent CRLM. However, secondary hepatectomy for multiple recurrent CRLM is less effective than that for single recurrent CRLM.
Lymphatic metastases are common in adenocarcinoma including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Therefore, lymph node dissection (LND) is essential for pancreatic cancer to achieve curative intent surgery. However, there are many different pathways of lymphatic metastases in left-sided pancreatic cancer. The lymphatics from the pancreatic body drain into celiac or superior mesenteric lymph nodes (LNs), although lymphatics from the pancreatic tail drain into splenic hilar or gastrosplenic LNs In 20
Purpose: The pathways of lymphatic metastases differ according to the tumor location in pancreatic cancer patients. However, it is unclear whether extended lymph node dissection (LND) is essential for all left-sided pancreatic cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the survival outcomes according to the extent of LND and tumor location in patients with left-sided pancreatic cancer. Methods: January 2005 to December 2013, we retrospectively identified 107 patients who underwent curative int
PURPOSE: Nrf2 regulates antioxidant protein expression and protects against drug toxicity and oxidative stress, whereas Keap1 controls Nrf2 activity. The Keap1-Nrf2 pathway affects the prognosis of various cancers, however, its effect on cholangiocarcinoma chemoresistance and prognosis remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway affects chemoresistance and prognosis of distal cholangiocarcinoma. METHODS: We investigated the correlation between Nrf2 and Keap1 exp

BACKGROUND: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is associated with significantly worse prognosis, yet its detection and risk stratification remain challenging in clinical practice. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between clinical nodal status (cN) and pathological nodal status (pN) in HCC patients and to identify risk factors for LNM via the National Cancer Database (NCDB). METHODS: We identified HCC patients who underwent liver resection between 2004 an
Single-incision laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (SIL-DP) has recently been attempted in the treatment of left-sided benign neoplasms of the pancreas. This study was conducted to evaluate the perioperative outcomes of SIL-DP compared with conventional laparoscopic DP (CL-DP).
Purpose: Single-incision laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (SIL-DP) has recently been attempted in the treatment of left-sided benign neoplasms of the pancreas. This study was conducted to evaluate the perioperative outcomes of SIL-DP compared with conventional laparoscopic DP (CL-DP). Methods: Patients who received laparoscopic DP from a single surgeon for benign pancreatic neoplasm from January 2012 to January 2014 were included. The patients were divided into two groups, SIL-DP and CL-DP. We
